(Part i)
It’s the last dance of the year. Here I am, driving to the dance. I‘m sure my two best friends, Dalik and Traji, are waiting for me by now. Last turn, last light. I’m here. I get out of the car my dad lent me special for the occasion. The red paint of the sporty convertible mirrors my long red gown. I hope Dalik and Traji recognise me.
I walk in. My eyes scan the room for those two faces I know the best. Finally I spot them. I wave and make my way over. They look surprised.
“Hi guys!” I say happily.
“Hey Courgette!” they reply in unison.
“So what is everyone up to?” I ask reaching for a cream soda.
“Well Djuni went off with Terthia, Qaws is trying to dance with Byta and...” Dalik began.
“Ooh! Look over there! Did you see that?” Traji cut him off.
“See what?” I ask out of curiosity
“Eliazar tried to kiss Rose but Rokar punched him.” Traji laughed. “Those first-years sure are crazy!”
Suddenly one of my favorite songs came on. The heavy bass beat boomed out of the huge black speakers positioned strategically against the stage.
“Ooh! Guys I love this song lets dance!” I scream over the music. I pull on Traji and Dalik. Traji runs out with me but Dalik stays behind. Our bodies move in sync to the heavy beat. My head nodds to the singers high feminine notes, hips swing to the drummer's tap-tap-boom, feet step out in time to the guitar’s low staccato notes. A good song, in all. When it was ending I notice Dalik talking to someone.
“Hey Dalik who was that?” I ask when we get over to that side of the room.
“Oh no one,” he replies. “Just an old friend.”
“Does your old friend like to dance?” Traji asked winking.
I laugh.
“C’mon Dalik!” Traji beckons
I grab his and Traji’s arms and start to pull. Traji comes almost instantly. Dalik hesitates.
“Dalik you have to dance sometime tonight!” I try to persuade him. He shakes his head ‘no’ and lets go. I try puppy eyes on him but it doesn't work. He just laughs and waves me off. I don’t move.
“Just save the last dance for me!” He shouts over the screams of other girls.
I run off with Traji. What I night, I think. It’s not even 10pm and it already feels stressed.
The song runs its course and me and Traji return to the side of the dance floor. The next song on is a slow song. Everyone is pairing off; Djuni has returned with Terthia, Rokar has let Eliazar and Rose dance. Even dark Ethique has asked the light and popular Arlyn to dance. I look around the room. Daeyna and Tyras. Anhir and Jo. The graceful Remolina with the clumsy Gotar. Everyone has a partner. Everyone but me, Dalik and Traji. We all look around awkwardly.
Suddenly, Kourana runs up and asks Traji to dance. He looks at us quickly as if too ask if its OK. We nod ascent. Then it was just me and Dalik. He turns to me, yellow-green eyes sparkling with mischief. He holds out one hand.
“Wanna dance?” he asks bowing.
“I would be delighted,” I say in reply.
We make our way out to the dance floor. He puts one hand on my shoulder blade, the other on my hip. I feel safe in his arms, so I sigh. He steps out and we begin to dance. It feels like everyone is melting away and it’s only us and the music that's playing. Long and slow, the movements he makes are just so, never too short or too long. Could it be my imagination? I think I just saw a shooting star flash by the window.
I think I’m falling in love.
