"Are you hungry?" He looks like he could use a good meal.

"Are you alright?" I quietly ask. Obviously they weren't, but I still wanted to know if they truly were.

I ask the cat,"Why were they going to kill you?" It might have been more tactful to ask a less painful question for the cat, but I really wanted to know.

"Are you alright?" He doesn't look hurt, but you could never know with these types of things.

"So," you say, as conversationally as possible. "Why were they all going to kill you?"

The little tom jumps when you speak - and he doesn't just flinch, he shoots five inches into the air, landing with a skittering thump and looking at you like you were invisible the whole time. He darts his head around, as if looking for other cats, then turns back to you.

"Pest," he says. "Thievin'fromtrashcans. Don'tfollowtherules. S'posethat'swhyanyway."

His voice is small and slightly high, like he hasn't spoken since he was a kitten, and he talks so quickly and suddenly that you have to take an extra minute to sort out what he said.

"You mean you don't know?" you ask, once you think you've figured it out.

He shakes his head with the same jerky, quick movements he uses to walk and talk.

You fall silent temporarily, turning this over in your head. You're not exactly sure what to think.

"Well, do you have somewhere you can go to be safe?" you say.

He tilts his head, staring at you quizzically. "D'you?"
