"They're coming with me," you say. Your voice is calm and stern.

Every single face stretches in shock. The bright eyes bulge.

"You can't be serious," one of the kittypets starts.

You turn and face him, standing tall. "Are you gunna stop me?"

He shrinks away immediately. Boy, they are pathetic.

"It's just-" The patched cat stands up and turns to look at you. "It's just a little pest."

"Then I'll handle it," you say. You look at the eyes and jerk your head. "Come on."

Slowly, disbelief coloring their eyes, the cat rises and makes their way through the crowd. Everyone steps away from them as if they're made of fire. They stop in front of you, and you finally get a look at this pest.

Well, no wonder everyone called them a rat. This is the tiniest, skinniest cat you've ever see, with fur so dark you can't make out any features other than those huge yellow eyes, which are comically big for the small head. The fur is wiry and ungroomed, sticking up all over the place, and their tail is thin as a rat's, with skinny little legs and paws that make you wonder how this cat stays standing. You can't even discern whether this cat is male or female - in fact, if it weren't for the shape of the body, you'd think this was a kitten.

You don't say any of this, however - you just look up at the Collared Crew, nod your head, and walk away, your rescue in tow.

Nothing is said as you make your way down the street. You occasionally glance at the cat, who you finally identify as male by the smell, and he's either staring straight ahead or right at you. He walks weirdly - like some of the tiny dogs you've seen around here, with a quick stride that makes him look like he's floating.

You figure that now is the best time to say something, but you're not quite sure what.
