Choices:
1: Killing is okay
2: Say nothing
3: What's the point?
4: Say nothing
5: Killing is okay
6: Still shouldn't have
7: What's the point?
Roll says... 1: Killing is okay.
"So killing cats that make you mad is just magically okay now?" you spit.
Charlie looks down at you, surprised. "Haven't you been listening?"
"All I heard is excuses," you say viciously. "Weak justifications for-"
Charlie is in your face. Her gaze has hardened just a little, enough to surprise you into silence. With her looming over you like this, you half-expect her to break your neck too.
Instead, she just stares at you silently for half a minute, until you're forced to drop your head. When she speaks again, her voice is unnervingly even.
"I'm not expecting you to side with me, Asterpaw," she says. "But I expect you to understand that things are different here. We're in the city. Someone dies every day. Might be someone you're close to, might be someone you hate. As long as the reasons are fair, it doesn't matter."
You force yourself to look up. "But he-"
"He challenged me knowing he would get killed if he lost." Charlie sounds like she's explaining something simple to a kit. "And I accepted the challenge knowing that I could die as well. If I had rejected it, then he would have killed me regardless. And you would be dead too."
"He..." you struggle. "He said for me to leave. He wouldn't have-"
"Do you think he gave a rat's tail over whether you live or die?" Charlie says, suddenly angry. "Do you think any of them do? They're leaving you alone because I said so. If I hadn't, you'd be dead right now."
"I don't owe you anything." You glare at her.
"No, you don't." Charlie stands tall, glaring right back at you. "But you need to understand that nothing except the word of someone else is keeping them from killing you."
"They wouldn't-"
"Trespassing," Charlie says. "Went 10 feet too close to the border. Stole food from a public trash can. Implied threatening of someone's children that you've never met. Indirect challenge to someone of authority. Food is running scarce. There's an endless list of reasons, Asterpaw, all of them flimsy and petty, but entirely valid if posed the right way."
You freeze. "Food is..."
"I'm being literal here, kid," Charlie says coldly. "They will eat you alive if they have a reason."
You know she's telling the truth. You look down, feeling sick.
"The day's rising." Charlie looks out towards the sun. "You're completely safe wherever you go. It's all up to you where you sleep."
Follow Charlie.
Go somewhere alone.
