Here's the link to the Dueling Club, it'd be useful to post it on the front page somewhere

I'm very particular about the difference of being afraid of something, and finding something uncomfortable. For example if I was a werewolf, you'd think my fear would be the full moon, like Lupin's, but it's not the moon itself that I'm afraid of, it's the effect if has on me. So personally, I think my Boggart would probably take the form of a Dementor.

Hello people. I'm new here (on this thread), thanks for letting me join. Has the race for the house cup begun or are we waiting for a particular date to start?
Does anyone know anything about the American Wizarding School? I only know what's on the Harry Potter Wiki page, which is mostly derived from a passing reference in the Fantastic Beasts movie, apparently. According to Rowling, the Salem Witches Institute isn't actually a school (despite the implication in the name, it's a parody of a UK Women's institution), so we're left in the dark. Incidentally, are there other wizarding schools elsewhere in the world that we know of? It would be really interesting to know where and how else magic is taught, given that all the magic we've seen is taught in one way, but I noticed on the American Wizarding School page there is a reference to "indigenous magic" implying that there are other kinds of magic that humans can use.
Gaah look at me asking you all questions like you're JK Rowling. What I mean is, what do you guys think?
I'll just go answer some questions..

Col. Fubster- Not a lot of people remember that this is the guy Aunt Marge leaves her other dogs with, he never has any screen time, is basically mentioned once in the books, but for some reason his name just stuck with me. I suppose he's not really a character, more of a name, but it's fun to see how many people remember this guy.
I suppose if Fubster doesn't really count then my actual favorite side character would be Ernie MacMillan. I would have said Luna but she's too important to really be a side character. Ernie is kind of pompous, but he's genuine with who he is and how he thinks, and I appreciate that.

Apparently, it you've been pronouncing Voldemort with a t, you've been saying it wrong. The t is silent, and sounds similar to two French terms, one of which means death flight, the other meaning death thief, of thief of death. I personally prefer the second translation, since by creating Horcurxes, Voldemort has been stealing from Death in order to preserve his own life.

Probably would have to be Mr. Filch, Sir Cadogan, or Kreacher. Filch was always one of the characters who no matter how vile and cruel he was, he always seemed to have some sort of comedic effect on the story. Another thing I liked about him was that he was ecstatic about Dolores Umbridge being appointed headmistress, not because he thought she'd do a better job as a teacher, but because she would allow him to punish the students in torturous ways. And Filch isn't all that bad a guy, when Hagrid carries in Harry's 'dead' body, Filch is devastated, because he knows with Harry dead, the Death Eaters have won. My reasons for Sir Cadogan are obvious, he's an all around funny guy, because he's mental, Ron even says "Yeah, we'll call you, if we ever need anyone mental." And he lets Sirius Black into Gryffindor Tower because he has the passwords that Neville wrote down. If I noticed a person who didn't look like a student with the passwords, I'd still refuse entry. And Kreacher, he liked the Blacks, but he didn't like Sirius, because he was a blood-traitor. He seemed ever loyal to Regulus Black, and was so happy when Harry gave him Regulus's fake locket. He also seems to have similarities to that crazy thing from Lord of the Rings, the one who's going "My precious!", in the way that he wants to keep the Black family heirlooms safe, but Sirius keeps throwing them away. Also, he doesn't start out loyal to Harry, like Dobby does, he develops as Harry starts treating him like a person, instead of a measly servant.

Bellatrix!

Thanks!

Scabior, Narcissa, Lucius. I actually don't know why I like Scabior... He is just so awesome! Narcissa because a mother's love is amazing, she isn't a deatheater, and she just wants the best life for her son! Lucius is just plain amazing - who else can pull off long white-blonde hair, and a black cane with a snake head! I also loved Regulus. Him we never see but I just love him no reason why... I just do.

What would your Boggart be?
Urgh..... As weird as it sounds, polystyrene... I have a phobia of it... In art class I had a major panic attack one time (a couple of years ago.)

Warning! This may be slightly spoilery for anyone who's not read or watched from Half-Blood Prince onwards.

favorite side character (those characters that didnt get mentioned a whole lot)? why?

Yaxley! Because I still can't get over the way he chases the trio out of the Ministry. Plus I love how desperate he is for Voldemort to recognise his work - so much so that he tries to disprove/argue with Snape. (It helps that my friend gave him a back story while we wait hopefully for something official, it just makes me that much more attached.) I also like the part in the books where he prevents Greyback from attacking on the astronomy tower. That's true dedication to Voldemort's exact words being carried out, I think! Besides that though, I really just like Peter Mullan's acting a lot. And the braid. Nobody forget the braid.

And of course, Scabior (hello Same Blood Together, excellent choice ^^) - for him I'll openly confess it's because of Nick Moran in the movies, making him "Camden rock star" to the point of sacrificing sure footing during the chase through the forest, lol! And trying to outdo Helena Bonham Carter and suffering for it in the scene where Bellatrix discovers the sword and goes mad at the Snatchers. Although having written him a little myself, it's really difficult to try and keep his accent consistent with the movie - and I'm English and know that accent pretty well. XD There are some great fanfic theories on why he's so good at snatching, too. I love decent Scabior fanfic.

Interestingly, the French verbs 'to steal' and 'to fly' are actually the same, voler (I speak french as a second language). Strictly speaking, however, his name ought to be spelled "Voledemort" because there is no conjugation that is spelled vol. The way it is phrased, "Vole de mort", is technically incorrect without a subject; however, assuming it is intended to be in the first person, then the correct phrase is "Je vole de mort", which means "I fly from death", which in the english sense means "I run away from death". However, to mean "death thief" it would have to be phrased as "voleur de mort". So it's not a perfectly direct name but I never noticed that before. I got the "mort" part but I didn't notice the flight/theft part. That's pretty cool.

Well, it you remember the second movie/book

TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE
flicks wand, words rearrange
I AM LORD VOLDEMORT

In order for it to be spelled Voledemort, he would need a second e somewhere in his name. If his name was Tome, then it might work, but that doesn't sound like a real name to me.

Another thing, I think the French translation was more of an accidental Easter egg than something that was put in on purpose and got changed. If you've listened to the first audio book, the narrator doesn't pronounce it with a t, and the director of the movies decided to add it in, that's where the confusion started.

For Harry, it would have to be the tremendous amount of love that he produces. His love made him push Ginny away, because he feared that Voldemort would go after her if he used Legilimency on him. Harry is also able to provide protection for his allies at the Battle of Hogwarts, making the curses that Voldemort cast wearing off very quickly. At the part that hits me deep inside is that his power of love is so strong, that he attempts to forgive Voldemort, and give him a chance at redemption.

For Ron, it would be the way that no matter what's going on, he can't turn away from food, unless it's Hagrid's that is. I don't have as much to go on about this one as I did for Harry, but I still find it pretty funny that Ron will be eating in situations that require his full attention.

And for Hermione, it's definitely her intelligence and the way that she doesn't take schoolwork lightly. In Philosopher's Stone, she says "I check this out for some light reading" and the book is as big as Hagrid's head! In Prisoner of Azkaban, she knows about werewolves even though the class isn't anywhere near that subject, and all the Gryffindors get angry at Snape for calling her an insufferable know-it-all, despite the fact that all of them have called her a know-it-all before. Ron even defends her by saying "You asked a question and she has the answer! Why'd you ask it if you didn't want it answered!?" And this is one of those moments that is the foundation of their relationship.
