Tale or illustration:
The Fox and the Crow
Fox scampered through the forest, hunger clawing furiously at his empty belly.
He snarled quietly and continued on his journey for food, raking his mind for ideas as he did so.
Suddenly, Fox stumbled on an oversized tree root and tumbled down a steep hill,
smacking into a large tree near the bottom. He bit his tongue to keep from barking out loud.
Up in the canopy above Fox, a Crow perched happily on a tree branch, a piece of chedder
cheese in it's dark beak. Before Crow could take a large bite out of her yellow morsel,
a loud bump interrupted her lovely meal.
Fox sat up, his head throbbing terribly. He wrinkled his nose with displeasure and shook
his head, trying to rid himself of the feeling. He then glanced around, his gaze soon landing
upon a dark smudge in the leaves above his head. "A crow!" thought Fox with a smirk.
"Is it holding... cheese?" Suddenly, a brilliant plan unfolded itself in Fox's mind.
"Madam!" cried the Fox in his most charming voice. "Madam crow, I couldn't help but spot your
gorgeous feathers through the canopy. Flutter on down here so that I may admire your
shining plumage from even closer."
Now, the Crow was flabbergasted. She has never been called beautiful before.
So she cautiously flapped to one of the lowest branches, careful to stay fairly high above the ground.
Fox's eyes widened with mock-delight. "You're even more stunning up close!" He noticed the
Crow hesitating and frowned. "Don't be so modest, love! You're the most beautiful thing I
have ever had the privilege to gaze upon. Surely you must be the queen of all birds!"
Fox's frown returned to a sly grin, his evergreen optics shining mischievously. "However,
I'm dying to know just how well a bird like yourself can sing. I'm sure your melodies will soothe
me beyond compare."
"Why not give it a go?"
So Crow, given false-confidence by this stranger, opened her beak wide to sing. "Caw, caw!"
cried she. The cheese that had once been in her mouth plummeted to the ground,
and straight into Fox's waiting jaws. He swallowed the cheese instantly and smirked at Crow.
"In exchange for your delicious piece of cheese, Crow..." he sneered to her, "I'll give you a piece of advice."
"Don't trust flattery," and with that, Fox left just as quickly as he first appeared.
