Welcome to
Lights On Lights Off

This thread is so big, do I have to read it all?
The first two posts on the thread (including this one) are the only two mandatory posts that you
must read. They contain the basic information that you need to know to play, and the rules for the game.
The rest of the posts on the first page of this thread are good to read, but not mandatory. They include helpful information like the FAQ, and well as the Playerlist (which you will use to play), and information about the LOLO team and who is best to contact.
The second page of this thread includes additional information for use if you need it, including help with making a story & costume, as well as helpful resources to make playing easier.
I Need Help!
x
x Having trouble understanding something, or you are confused about something? Have a question that isn't answered in the thread? Let us know! You can PM one of the
LOLO team members, post on the thread, or ask on the
fanclub. We would be more than happy to help you out, and if you need a more detailed explanation that what is on the thread, we would be happy to provide you with one! We understand you might be nervous about approaching us, we are very friendly and we'll do everything we can to give you the assistance you need.

What is Lights On Lights Off?
Lights On Lights Off (otherwise known as LOLO) is a user-run Halloween themed gifting game. It runs during the entire month of October. It is essentially the CS version of trick or treating. Its a fun way to get to gift people and receive gifts. We have been running this game every year since 2011. The original idea came from a game by the same name that was played on Wajas (as well as other sites).
LOLO is not an official CS game or specifically run by site staff.
Any questions concerning LOLO should go only to LOLO team members.
By playing Lights On Lights Off, you agree to follow the below rules.Refusal to follow the rules will subject you to removal from the player list
and you will not be allowed to play again until next year.
How to Play & Gameplay Rules:
- Pick a pet: This will be your trick or treater. Choose carefully, as you will be using this pet for the entire game.
. - Choose a costume:
- You cannot use the pet's design as the costume; it must be wearing items to create a costume.
- No costumes that are bloody, gory, or disturbing and no character cosplays from media that is not CS appropriate.
- It doesn't have to be a typical Halloween costume, they just need to be dressing up as something recognizable!
- The pet's costume should cover a good portion of their body, not just include a few accessories.
- Write a story:
- Minimum length is 10 sentences. There is no max limit, but it is suggested not to make it so long you would need to scroll to read the whole thing.
- The only restrictions on story content are:
- You may not write about the door of the house you end at opening or your pet hearing/seeing anything inside the house or knowing anything about the character answering the door.
- Your story needs to be family friendly (follow the roleplay rules).
- Be as creative as you want as long as your story ends with your pet trick or treating at a house!
- Say what your pet is dressed up as in the story if it's not obvious.
- Put 'lights off' in your signature: This must be clearly visible before you post your form. The best place to put it is in the upper left of your signature as an image or in an easy to read color and size.
. - Post your form:
- Your form must be approved before you can begin playing.
- You will be messaged by a LOLO team member when it has been approved.
- Never post a WIP form or repost your form.
- If you do not receive a message within 24 hours notify a LOLO team member.
- Start playing: Use the player list to find other players, find one who has 'lights on' in their signature and send them a PM with your story & trick or treater. The user will respond with either a trick, or a treat!
- You may only trick or treat at each house once. If they give you a trick, that counts as your one time.
- You must keep track of who you trick or treated with. Check this post for suggestions on how to keep a list.
- If your ToT PM is not answered after 2 days, you may resend. Only resend if their lights are currently on.
. - Turn your lights on: Once you are ready to receive trick or treaters, put 'lights on' in your signature. Users will PM you their own story, and you can give them either a trick, or a treat!
- You must reply to all trick or treaters. If it is a trick you still need to reply. If your lights were off when they sent it, tell them so. You must reply.
x
x I don't have any good items for costumes! If you don't have anything that makes a good costume, or are having trouble making one, you can get a free costume from people listed on the 'Costume Help' post.
I'm having trouble writing my story! If you need any help with your story, are having trouble starting it or getting it long enough, try reading the 'Story Help' post. You can also ask a LOLO team member for one-on-one help.
Thread Rules:
- Only forms and questions belong on this thread. We do not allow any kind of 'bump', 'marking', 'lights on', ect, on this thread. All chat and conversation about LOLO belongs on the fanclub.
- Do not answer gameplay questions. Leave these for a LOLO team member to handle, unfortunatly it is easy for misinformation to spread.
- Report all rule-breakers to LOLO team members. This include people sending ToT PMs who are not on the list, people who have stories or dressups that do not follow the rules, and players without 'lights on/off' in their signature.
- Be aware and considerate of other players. If you know it will be a while till you can answer Trick or Treater PMs, leave a note in your signature. If you have a small wishlist, consider adding more pets so its easier for users to give you treats. Consider leaving a note in your trade rules so other users know what kind of treats you'd be interested in.
- Story or costume shaming is not tolerated. Publicly or privately shaming someone for their choice in story or costume, or the perceived quality of their story or costume is not allowed under any circumstance. So long as they follow LOLO guidelines, users are free to create the story or costume of their choice.
Form:
Please double check that you have read and understood all the rules and how-to-play aboveAlmost every declined form can be avoided by double-checking these sections.
We suggest going through our
Rules Checklist before posting your form.
If you are unsure if your form is ok, have a question, or just need help with something, please message a LOLO team member.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a 'trick' and what is a 'treat'?:
- Trick: A trick means that you do not give them anything. Why you give a trick is up to you. When you trick someone, simply respond saying 'trick' or with a short story response saying 'trick'. Rude/mean/creepy/gore/etc are not allowed in trick messages.
- Treat: A treat means that you give them a gift. It can be any kind of gift and any size. A single pet counts as a treat.
- What can be given as a treat:
CS pets, items or C$
Custom art
Off site currency/pets may be given only if the other user agrees to it beforehand
What do 'lights on' and 'lights off' mean exactly?:
- 'Lights On': Think of it as real Halloween, if a house has its lights on, that means you can knock on their door and ask for candy. It is the same concept, Lights On means you can send them your story through PM and they will send you a trick or a treat back.
- 'Lights Off': Lights Off means you should wait till later. Sometimes Light Off could mean they are restocking on pets, are trying to catch up on current PMs, they are not online right now, or are simply too busy at the moment.
I was accepted, but I'm not on the Player List. xxxxxxxx
We do not update immediately after accepting people, sometimes it takes a little while because we are doing many people, or the person who accepted you does not have the power to update the list. The list will be updated soon, you only need to notify us if users accepted AFTER you are on the list and you aren't, as that means you've probably been missed.
Someone's signature doesn't have 'lights on' or 'lights off'
Are you on mobile, or on a PC using Safari or Google Chrome? These have been known to sometimes cause problems with signatures and cut off part of the signature, especially if the person has large images and/or lots of coding. Check their interests first. If none of this applies, you can pm a LOLO team member with a link to their profile to get it checked out. Do NOT send trick or treat PMs if you cannot see someone's lights status!
What if I don't want to trick or treat? Just give out treats to other people.
You are allowed to do this, just let us know on your form when you fill it out that you will not be trick or treating. You will not be required to give us a costume or story, just leave those areas blank. You will still need to follow all other rules that apply to giving tricks/treats. If you change your mind later and want to start trick or treating, you can fill out a new form, but you MUST state clearly that you applied before to just give out tricks/treats, so that we don't end up putting you on the list twice.
I keep hearing about 'trick' and 'treat' stories, what are they, and do I have to make one?
These are stories some people use to respond to 'trick or treat' PMs, usually they will follow where your story leaves off, having the door open and a treat being given, or a trick may be given. You don't have to make one if you don't want to, but a lot of players enjoy making and reading them. There are no rules for these except for the basic rules that cover the whole game, no excessive gore or violence, and no rudeness. If you have a pet in these stories it does not need to be in costume.
I'm really afraid of breaking the rules!
It's alright! You don't need to be scared, we are very nice, and we can understand the difference between someone making a mistake and someone purposefully not following a rule or being rude. We have never had more than 1 or 2 users each year out of hundreds that we have had to ban or tell them they need to leave. If you don't try to make trouble, you have nothing to worry about! Just do your best to follow the rules, and if you make a mistake, its ok!
I have a problem/want to report something, but I'm afraid I'll be bothering the LOLO team members.
We all volunteered for this, and we are very willing and happy to help you out! Don't be afraid to PM us! There is extra information on team members on this post, it will let you know which of us have the most time available to help you out and who you should PM for certain things.
Question not answered here?
There is an
extended FAQ on the second page of the thread with the less-asked or less important questions. Please check there first to see if your question is answered. If it is not, or you still have questions, you can ask your question here, on the fanclub, in the discord, or you can message a
LOLO team member.

Lacuna [co-owner]
My time zone is MST (Arizona) and I do work during the day Monday through Friday, but I will respond ASAP
britneyrox
I live in CST (Illinois, USA - 5 hours behind CS site time). Generally busiest on Thursdays, as I have night classes. Pretty open other days, especially in the afternoons.
Burrito Bunny
I live in EST (New Hampshire, USA) but I keep rather irregular hours. Responses will be most infrequent from 8am-3:30pm on weekdays.
sumashira
My timezone is MST. I am a stay-at-home dog mom taking online classes for accounting, so I am almost always available for messages with questions or concerns.
lucky333123
My time zone is PST. I am a full time student and doing internship hours. I am often busy, but I will do my best to answer you as soon as possible.
Who do I contact?
Below are the most common things you may need to contact us about, if you need help in another area not mentioned below, it is best to contact Celozon.
- Any LOLO Team member: General questions, rule breakers, help with stories or costumes
- Celozon or Lacuna only: Disputes or arguments with other players
- Celozon only: Suggestions
Also check for these first: - It is something serious and needs immediate attention, contact any team member currently online, or if none are, Celozon or Lacuna
- It is something that breaks CS rules (ex. bullying), don't message us, send a help ticket or report the post. CS staff must handle that.
Tips for Messaging us:
Make sure you state your point/question clearly and completely. If you have a question, tell us what specifically your question is about. If you want to report something, give us all the information you can. Profile links, as well as quoting any relevant conversations and messages will help us respond to the problem faster. Think about anything we may need to know and try to give us that. There is no such thing as giving us too much info!
Examples:
NO: "I need help on my story"
YES: "I am having trouble writing the beginning of my story, do you have any tips?"
NO: "Someone's story has too much violence."
YES: "Someone's story includes a lot of violence and I think it might break the rules. Here is their username and link to their profile. I have quoted their story for you below."
NO: "This user is being rude to me."
YES: "This user is being rude to me, here is their profile link. I have quoted our entire conversation for you below"
With the above examples, the 'NO' version means we have to PM you back to ask for the details, if you let us know those details right away, we can take care of the problem or help you that much faster.

Extended FAQ:
I want my username updated on the player list.
We do not update usernames on the playerlist, whichever username you have when we add you is what it will be on the list for the entirety of the game. In order to ensure others can still find you if you change your username, your profile is linked, and your user ID is listed next to your username. The reason we do not update usernames is because it would be a lot of extra work for the staff, especially when some users change their usernames very often.
I can't find this user on the list.
You should always search users on the list by their user ID, not their username, since their username may be different than what is on the list. If you do not know how to find someone's user ID, on their profile page look at the page URL. The numbers at the end of the URL is the user's ID. If you still cannot find them when searching by ID, they may have not entered a form for LOLO or their form was accepted but the list hasn't been update yet. Message a thread mod on CS or the discord and give them the user's profile link and ask if the user is allowed to be playing LOLO. The mod can check our live list to see if the user has been accepted or not. It is important that we know if users are playing without being accepted, so it is always prefer that you message us!
Giving tricks sounds mean, why is that an option?
LOLO is a gifting game, so if you join you should certainly be prepared to give gifts, but the important thing about gifts is that they are voluntary! Otherwise it's not a gift anymore. We want to make sure you always have a choice to say no. If you don't want to give a gift for any reason, you don't have to. You don't need to explain yourself or feel bad about it, its your choice and we don't want you to ever feel obligated to gift someone in LOLO. Thats why we have the option for tricks, and you should never feel bad about giving a trick, its part of the game!
I keep getting a lot of tricks, why is this happening?
The most common reasons I see that users give trick for is stories or costumes that do not or are very close to not following the rules for the game. For example, having the minimum number of sentences, and many of them being very short may cause others to feel not enough effort was put into the story, even if it technically follows the rules. If you feel you seem to be getting a lot of tricks, you may want to try re-examining your costume or story, or asking a thread mod to look at it for you. Even though it has already been accepted, a thread mod can approve changes to your story/costume, especially if it is negatively impacting your gameplay experience.
Can I become thread staff too?
Please do not ever message thread staff asking to join! It is by application only. If we feel that we need more thread staff, we will usually open thread staff applications during the early applications period of LOLO (September 15th to October 1st). This allows us a couple weeks to get applications in and pick new members, as well as letting them get adjusted to the workflow before the game starts. Especially since the first 2 weeks of October are the busiest for us, it is important that we have a full team during that time, so applications are usually over by the first week of October. If you are interested, check out the front page, if applications are open they will be announced and linked there.
Is a [Fandom, Movie, TV show] related costume allowed?
If the fandom/movie/tv show can be googled and the first page of images have any that are not CS appropriate, it will not be allowed. If you are ever unsure, please message a thread mod and let them know what you'd like to do for your costume. We are a bit stricter with LOLO dressups than CS's usual rules, so even if a dressup is normally fine on CS we may still not allow it if the above is true. While we cannot control what someone searches online, we would like as much as possible to help younger users who are curious about a character or fandom and searching it only to find content they did not want to see. And especially with a Halloween based game we understand the allure of doing something related to a fandom/movie/tv show that is scary or gory, but this is also a gifting game on a children's site, so lets try and keep it friendly for all ages.
I'm not much of a writer, can I still participate?
Of course! We know for some the idea of writing a story about your trick or treater can be a bit taunting. We have a full post fill with tips on writing your story if you need any help getting started or tips for good stories. There is also a spot to share your story on the discord if you'd like advice from others, or you can do so on the fanclub. If you'd like something more one on one, you can message any thread mod about your story as well. We would be more than happy to help you out! And if you are nervous about sharing your writing, just keep in mind this is all very laid back, there is not judgement scale or rating. Its a fun way to spend your month and it doesn't need to be perfect. Don't worry about your story being too short or too long, as long as you are happy with it!
What are the exact dates and times LOLO runs during?
We follow official CS time, so each day switches over at CS rollover. The current time on CS is listed on the bottom bar of any page. Be sure to make a note of when rollover is for you. The exact times for LOLO are as follows:
Early applications: September 15 12:00 am CS time to September 30th 11:59 pm CS time
Game starts: October 1st 12:00 am CS time to October 31st 11:59pm CS time
I thought gifting games like these were not allowed?
A rule was put into place for topics in the Free adoption boards that stated that only the creator of the topic should giveaway free pets/items. Since LOLO did not follow this new rules, I had to acquire permission for LOLO to continue to run, provided that it did not cause any of the problems that had been the reason those topics were disallowed. This is part of the reason we are so strict with the rules for LOLO, the thread would be shut down if it were to cause problems.
Do you know about >insert name of similar gifting game<?
I am aware there are some other gifting games at run at other times that are similar. I do not play any of them, I do not know any of the owners or collaborate with them, and I do not know the specifics for any of the other games. I don't own the concept for LOLO or other gifting games set up in a similar manner, so it is totally fine those others exist, but if you need information about them you will need to go to the owners for those threads as I can't help with that.
Can I make a LOLO game on another site?
Sure thing! I don't own the concept, I got the idea for a game by the same name that I played on Wajas way back when and I brought it to CS. Its got quite a few differences from the original version I played, as the CS community is very different from the Waja's community. All I ask if you use the idea is to not use my coding or exact wording. Please create or word it your own way, and be aware that I specifically designed this version for the CS community, and wherever you choose to introduce this game will likely be different and play it in a different way. If you want suggestions on how to set it up, I'd be more than happy to provide you with my knowledge from running LOLO on CS.

Signature Images
The below link contains images you can use in your signature to show whether your lights are ON, or OFF. The images belong to their respective owners. They are free to use by anyone playing LOLO, but do not use them for non-LOLO stuff or offsite.
We are looking for the creators of some of these images. If any of these belong to you and have not been credited on the image, please contact Celozon.
How to use:
Go to the image you would like to use, right click and copy the image URL. Put the image URL inside this code;
- Code: Select all

Place in your signature by going to 'My account' -> 'Profile' -> 'Edit Signature' and paste it into the box.
Getting your images added:
If you would like an image you made to be added, post it on this thread or PM Celozon.
- The text needs to be clearly visible. Keep in mind that small text or dark background may be obscuring them, some people have have a harder time seeing it than you, or cannot see it as well if they are on mobile.
- Be aware that any GIF images will not appear in stash previews unless they are 150 pixels wide or smaller. You may consider reducing the size so that the images will be more visible.
- When you ask for your image to be added you are agreeing that other players have the freedom to use it as they wish for LOLO purposes.
- We will not add images that appear to use pictures that may not be free to use. Places like glitter graphics use a lot of images without the permission of the artist. We will not add your banners/stamps if we think you don't have permission from the artist to use their images. If you drew the image please tell us so when you post them.
- We will not add images that manipulate CS items or pets, this is not allowed. It is fine to move items/pets around or add text, but you cannot edit or otherwise manipulate the items or pets in any way.
- If one or more of these images belong to you and you would no longer like them to be up for other users, please contact Celozon to have them removed.

Writing Your Story:
- Describe your character and things around them.
- Create an environment that affects how your pet trick-or-treats.
- Be creative in how you trick-or-treat.
- Write at least 10 sentences.
- Try creating a longer story without making it boring to read.
- Include a picture or link to your trick-or-treater.
- Keep in mind that some users answer the door with a character and story.
- End your story with your pet saying "Trick or Treat!"
- Have little or no punctuation in your story.
- Use repetition that states the same information over and over.
- Use the same words over and over, such as "was" in every sentence.
- Create any themes that might not be suitable for younger children.
- Change your story once it's been used.
- Take control of the reader's possible character who answers the door or story.
Starting Points:
You wish to grab the reader's attention. An introduction that catches their eyes will help you in the long run. Below I will list some basic ideas you can play around with. If you don't like any of these, you can make up your own. - A pet who is getting ready for Halloween by dressing up or picking out a costume.
- A pet who has run into a friend while trick-or-treating.
- A pet who encounters something good or bad while walking to the next house.
- A pet who has just left their house and is now on his/her way to the first house.
- A pet who was at first scared for his/her first trick-or-treating outing, but later was excited.
Body:
Your next paragraph or so should revolve around your introduction. It needs to build on top of what you've already written and provide new information that further captures your readers. - Your pet, who was first seen getting ready, has now headed out the door to go trick-or-treating.
- Your pet has spoken to his/her friend and has now parted ways or has decided to hang out with them later that evening. (Not while trick-or-treating.)
- Your pet has reacted in a proper way to whatever he/she encountered.
- Your pet is walking along, using descriptive elements to describe his/her surroundings.
- Your pet is overcoming the initial fright and is getting excited about the treats he/she might receive.
Closing Statement/Paragraph:
You will need to end your story in a manner that doesn't leave your reader hanging. Remember, we're here to trick-or-treat, not write a cliff hanger. You'll need to avoid confusing your reader. You should end with something along the lines of your pet visiting the reader's house. - Your pet has found the house he/she wishes to walk up to and is last seen knocking on the door and saying "Trick or Treat!"
- Your pet and his/her friend have already parted ways, so your pet is trick-or-treating at someone's house before heading over to his/her friend's.
- Your pet, whether happy or sad, has walked up to the reader's door and speaks in a way that represents his/her emotions.
- Your pet is describing the house he/she has walked up to and ends the story by using description to show how he/she trick-or-treats.
- Your pet is last seen trick-or-treating at a house while description is used to describe how excited your pet really is.

How to Pick a Costume:
- Use any items you like, doesn't have to be specifically meant for costumes
- Make costumes that aren't Halloween-oriented (ex. not using typical 'halloween' costumes like ghost, vampire, witch, etc)
- Get a costume from the players listed at the bottom of this post if you don't have any costumes
- Re-use costumes from previous years
- Use scenery after the costume is complete
- Be creative!
- Use random scenery items without putting an actual costume on your pet
- Beg for costumes and items from people
- Use a pet's design as its costume, or have the pet dress up as themselves
- Use excessive amount of 'blood' items, or place them around ears/eyes/mouth.
- Suggest gore/violence with your costume
- Especially creepy costumes or costumes that suggest gore or violence are not allowed. Things like basing your pet off a character in a show/movie/book/ect who's entire purpose is creepy/gore/violence is also not allowed. Please remember this is a children's site; keep everything PG.
- If you think your costume might not be easily recognizable, or if its a character from a show, movie, book, ect. (even if its a character from a popular series like Harry Potter), you should say what your pet is dressing up as in your story.
- If you are not sure if your costume is good or not, you can PM one of the LOLO team members or post on the fanclub thread asking for opinions.
- You can't change your costume after the game starts, so choose carefully. Try to spend some time on your costume, make sure you are satisfied with how it looks. I know your excited to get to play, but remember you'll have the whole month of October, don't use a costume you'll regret later.
Examples:

Not Acceptable
The pet is not actually dressed up. The 'costume' is part of the pet's design.

Acceptable
Though it has a lot of scenery items, all we are concerned about is the costume. It is wearing the mummy costume, so this is fine.

Acceptable
Normally just a partial costume may not be allowed, but since rats are smaller, just this would be considered a complete enough costume.

Not Acceptable
This pet does not have a costume on, there are just scenery items.

Not Acceptable
This pet is not dressed up as anything, it just has some accessories on.
Free Costumes:
Have trouble finding a costume, or don't have anything to use as a costume? Below are some people who have volunteered to give away costume items to people to need them. All of these are completely free, you do not need to give anything in return. It is appreciated if you give the costumes back so they may be given out again next year, but you do not have to. Please be sure to read and follow their terms.
If you would like to be added to this list, please PM Celozon with any terms or conditions you have. You may ask to be removed at any time if you no longer wish to give out costumes.
Username: CelozonTerms: I will only give out costumes to users who do not have any or very many. I will not count any free store items or items from the last summer event. I will check your items and if I determine that you already have enough I will let you know. You may pick what you would like from me. I have suggested costumes
here.
- Do not take non-costume items. This includes food, non-essential accessories, scenery backgrounds, pets, toys, ect. You may take some ONLY if I specifically said so on my suggested costumes post, and only the items I stated could be taken.
- Do not take more than one costume. You should not need multiple wigs, dresses/shirts, contacts, ect.
- Try to find or think of a specific costume you want, and let me know what you plan on so I can let you know if the items will be enough, or help you find additional ones. Or if you need help picking, let me know what you're interested in.
- Please remember to be respectful of me and other players. I spend a lot of time and pets getting these items each year so that you can get a costume you'll enjoy. And please remember that there are many people in need of costumes, I understand wanting the perfect costume, but don't ask for costumes if you don't need them. They can be used for those who have nothing.

Keeping a List of Users Visited:
You are required to keep a list of everyone you visit while playing. It is NOT acceptable to say you will remember. It is NOT acceptable to say it is too much work or too hard. You must do this to keep from going to the same houses over and over again. Users caught continuously re-visiting houses will be punished. Some houses will allow you to come multiple times. This is only allowed if they state it in their signature.
Below are some suggestions on easy ways to keep a list of everyone you have visited. Everyone on the list has a number next to their username, that number will stay the same throughout the entire game, so you can use these numbers to keep track rather than writing down everyone's usernames or IDs.
It is also suggested that you mark down which ones have replied to you and which have not. You are allowed to re-send a trick or treat message if someone does not reply after 2 days/48 hours. You may only re-send if their lights are on.
Suggestions:
- Keep a piece of paper and write down the number of everyone you visit.
- Open a word/notepad/ect document on your computer (if mobile, get a note-keeping app or open one that you already have) to keep track with.
- Create a draft on CS by making a post and rather than hitting 'submit' hit 'save draft'. You can access the draft by going to 'My account' and clicking 'Manage drafts', then clicking on the draft. You can also save PM drafts this way.
- Keep a list on Google Docs
- Keep a list on Excel, copy-paste the entire list and individual boxes can be colored certain ways to show whether you have visited or not.
You can do all of the above by writing down the name and ID every time you visit a house, or copying the list into your online document/draft, and removing or crossing out everyone you visit.
There are many ways you can keep track of your list. The most important thing though is that your way will be reliable. If your computer is prone to deleting documents or crashing, making your list on paper or Google Docs (which saves automatically) is better. If you are prone to losing your documents, make a link to it on your desktop. Take into account your individual situation and plan ahead.
