Brief Story:
.....The ocean carried a crisp, morning breeze with it as it rolled over the beach. Red could barely contain his excitement; he shivered, stamped his hooves, and chewed on his bit. I stroked his neck to reassure him and shortened up the reins. We were waiting on the beach for the rest of the group to catch up. Red knew that once the others got there, I'd let him go and gallop, his favorite thing to do. I turned in the saddle when I heard the sound of hooves trudging along in the sand.
.....I turned my Crowntail around and circled into the back of the small group. Two of the three others' Crowntails were jittering and pacing, just like Red. I talked with the other riders briefly and planned the gallop. We started out at a trot and, with Red practically jumping in place, began the charge.
.....Red gave a small buck and raced forward with the herd. His powerful hooves thundered across the wet sand, the waves rushing up and shying away to our right. I pressed my knuckles into his neck and put more weight in my stirrups to rise higher out of the saddle, urging him to go as fast as he wanted. We led the herd down the shoreline, several early beachgoers smiling as we galloped by. When I finally said "whoa", half halted with the reins, and lowered back into the saddle, Red slowed after several more strides, his chest heaving.
....."Good boy, Red," I cooed, patting his neck and letting out the reins a bit. Red sighed contently and waited for the group, the sun still rising over the ocean.
