- >> about the user
Hello there, I am balto., a fellow member of the rpw community as a staff member - having the titles of Artist, Nursery Artist, Growth Artist and Artist Adviser. I am a long-term and older member, and I happen to have 48 rpws of my own, one of which is an unmade ru, and it would be an honor if I could somehow add the Balto rpw to my little group. Despite the fact that she is my own design, I have tried my hardest and hope my form impresses enough to gain the ownership of her.
If I were to win Balto, I know that many think this happens, but I would not forget about her. I would care for her and cherish her as I do with all my rpws, even if it isn't so much on CS, I regulalry develop my characters offline, through traditional sketches and my own little headcanons that I develop in my head. I would be encouraged to develop her character further, fleshing her personality and general character more as I went along, adding little bits and things and changing her in good and bad ways to affect the character, and make her not a mary-sue. I wouldn't be trying for her if she wouldn't change, if I were to own her, I wouldn't connect as deeply as I do.
>> the basics
This RPW goes by the name of Balto, named not only after the character, but also the famous dog himself that the half wolf was based off. The real life Balto was a snow dog, and saved many lifes during his lifetime, and while this Balto looks nothing like him, and is even the opposite gender, I well, had to keep the name. It suited the character and design too much, and I love the name obviously, so why change it? Balto is a female, like it was said as one of the criteria points, and is dfab, only identifying as a female. She is a young adult wolf, meaning that while she does have her own responsibilities that she does have to look after, she can still act like a pup at points, especially around young pups, usually the pups of her close friends that she has to care for. She was born on the lucky day of December 25th, the day of Christmas, and within one of the three winter months (or summer months, depending). Her nationality however, is unknown, even to the wolf herself. She never found out, although she does have a desire to try, within her own time and when she feels ready.

- >> personality
In terms of personality, Balto is a relatively quiet wolf. Even with her new found taught ability to speak English, and to understand what her friends are finally saying, she doesn't seem to participate much in the talking, almost like she is anti-social or mute. This isn't really the case, she just much prefers the quiet, and so she barely makes a sound, letting her more wild roots rest. It lets her think, of the past of course, and usually about Mother and what she could've done better. But she does have those days where she becomes more loud and vocal then the usual Balto you'll end up seeing. Like her mood is brighter then it was before, and she tends to make her friends happy when she's like this...although this wolf has no idea why this sound makes others happy...strange.
Balto is a more calmer wolf, too, often thinking before she decides to act on a matter, even with friends in danger - she doesn't panic, she doesn't get angry, she calmly thinks or how she may be able to help them, despite her wild side trying to tear through and just jump in like she would've in the wild. She was taught to behave this way - think before acting to get the best result, as something she had been told many times when learning the language of her friends. She does it so she won't put herself in danger and make her friends worry, but at the same time, so they her friends aren't in an even worse place then they were before she began to think of getting them out. In the wild she would've never thought this way, so this is one of her newly found traits.
Balto is also rather intelligent, for her heritage of being born and raised wild. When she was brought to e world she lives in today, and when she was being taught how to speak and how to act around other wolves, the ones who taught her saw that she was learning at a faster pace then most wolves usually would - even young pups, who are thought to be smart for their age. Balto learnt all she needed to in a short amount of time, considering what she had to learn, and even now she shows her intelligence - strategical thinking unlike others, and almost like she has a whole different mind set then the regular wolf has themself. Although she doesn't usually listen when others try to tell her, she does have a potential with her mind, and has been recommended various paths she could take with it.
She seems more mature around the majority of wolves, even for her young age it is though she would be going out with friends and having fun, living her life the fun and easy way - but no. Being raised in the wild taught her to be wary, cautious, taught her to never let her guard down, really - even as a friendly wolf, she will stop at nothing to protect her home and the walls she lives within - her territory. If anyone threatens it, she will speak with words, as they speak louder then actions...but if it does continue the wolf brings out the old tooth and claw tactic. She doesn't really like it, but at the same time, it's as if you're living in a pack of wolves, you have to protect your territory and anyone who lives in it, intruders should know this and if they enter they know what can happen, she is fiercely protective of what she has earned over the years.
Even with being protective of her own home, she is also protective of her own friends, especially her first two, Michael and Michelle. She doesn't like it when others try to hurt the ones she loves, the ones that helped her be the wolf she is today, and so she will put her life on the line to make sure that those wolves go away - despite the fact, for the most part, the situation won't be that bad as she may think it is. It's almost like with the territory, her wild side thinks that Michael and Michelle, and any friends she has made, are part of her pack, and she is the leader, meaning she has to make sure that no one hurts them, and that if she has to, she will defend them at all costs. Her pack may be small, and may not need to be protective, but it's her instincts, telling her that this is what she has to do. Telling her that while it may not seem like it, they need her to defend them.
Of course, as well, no old habits die out as you would think. Balto has grown to be a more civilised wolf, to know the outside world and how she must act...for the most part. But due to the fact that she was born wild, free, that she grew with no rules, you have to realise that she does have a more unpleasant side. Sure, she doesn't try to show it around anyone else, but sometimes her thoughts get so pent up inside that she has to let them out somehow. She does this rough destroying - for the most part, her own belongings, tearing and breaking thinks when she needs to, to release her pent up energy. A run in the forest could help this, she could hunt, but due to the forest still belonging to her mother as territory - or so she thinks, she can't just go and trespass. So she does her best to do it at home, and will just throw out and replace anything she ruins. She would never take this out on another wolf, unless they got her really aggravated.
>> history
There was a shill whine as a large wolf stared down at her brown furred pup, neatly plending into her own fur, like mother like daughter as they say. The bigger wolf, exhausted, bent her head down and gave the pup a lick on the head, assuring the slightly distressed pup she was still here. And it seemed to work, the small pup calming and quieting down, before nodding off to sleep.
The wild life was tough, it was not as easy as it first seemed. You had to be strong, you had to survive, and depending on who you were, you might have the lives of other wolves resting on your shoulders, such as this mother had with her single pup, her live pup...There had been two others, the day before, both had been given to the cold, nothing to be done. And while Mother Wolf had been sad, she had to cherish what she had been given, this single, small, runt of a pup. Reminding the mother so much of her former self, before she had met her mate, when she too was a pup.
A sigh escaped, and she rested her head down, curling her tail around her child. She had to hunt soon, to survive, to help her pup survive, but it was too risky on a day like today. Other wolves were out, celebrating...although she was unsure of what, the meaning of this...day, it had seemed like any other normal day to Mother...except for the day of a new life. But it was still normal, and with other wolves out and about, cheery and happy, she couldn't risk leaving, for she would put the pup and herself in danger, that is what she had to think of right now. Even with the snow and cold, her pelt clearly stood out.
Too much of a risk.
But she needed it.
Her pup depended on it.
So Mother Wolf rose to her paws, looking as her resting pup, before she quietly slunk out of the den, into the cold air.
Nothing happened that day.
Balto's history is a rather unique one. She was born an outsider, an outcast, different from the others. She had lived a rather normal life though, except it was outside. Her mother cared for her, although they didn't care for names back then - she called her Mother, while Mother called her Pup, no sense for names, no need for them to take up time. She had liked this, it made their bond stronger.
As a young pup, Balto was the adventurous type, taking an interest in the outside world, the one outside the den and borders her mother had given her, and often snuck out when she could.
This caused her to meet her friends, wolves she would consider friends, the two she cherishes, even now.
"Come on Machelle - you're such a slow poke!"
The ears of the brown pup flicked up, alert. She had grown, and although small for her size, she was growing strong with the lessons her mother regularly gave her.
"S-slow down Michael, you're too f-fast." Another shrill voice rang out, female this time, and sounding exhausted.
Pup could only lower her ears, tail going between her legs. Intruders...maybe she could fight? No...they were strange, they sounded strange, what were they doing?
She heard the sound of snow being crushed and ran through by paws, getting louder and louder, before a brown shape came into view, knocking into her.
The pup was knocked down, the wind taken out from her lungs, but despite that, the pup staggered to her paws, shaking her pelt.
Beside her, a few meters away, lay another pup - however, wearing some strange...things. When his eyes opened, they were green, contrasting to his mother brown and mostly natural pelt, and he stared at her, eyes wide.
"W-who are you?"
Michael and Machelle had been a rather strange set of pups - twins, and singing partners. But the pup grew to like them, got used to them outside of her mothers permission. Mother never knew, so Pup never told. These two make rather strange sounds...no barks or growls like she was used to...but that didn't matter.
Eventually the pup spent most of her days with these two - but of course, something good comes with something bad, eventually, she couldn't always keep a secret.
Not from Mother.
Pup had not even taken one step inside the den when she heard a snarl, and her ears flicked down. She had left at dawn, to meet up with Michael and Machelle...they played with her, made her feel different then what her mother did. She had left before Mother had awoken, and Mother wasn't happy.
The pup, now grown to almost full height, came deeper into the den, before she was bowled over, met with a flurry of paws and teeth, sharp canines snapping at her fur. The wolf heard a yelp come from her muzzle, and pushed the older wolf off her, scrambling to her paws.
She was met with her mother, who was snarling, hackles raised, tail bristled and teeth bared, crimson eyes narrowed. What was going on? Had Pup done something wrong? Had she found out?
Mother then growled and motioned to her pups paw, causing the other to look down...she was wearing those strange clothing items that her friends had, she had been given them and had forgotten to give them back...her paws had been called.
The pup lowered herself and made her way to her mother, licking underneath her jaw, whining. Maybe she would forgive.
She didn't.
Mother snapped, grabbing one of her paws and pinning her down, rolling her onto her back. Mother then barked harshly, followed by another snarl, before letting her up, stepping back but not letting her guard down. The pup got up shakily, flicking her ears back, staring hopelessly at her mother.
Then she turned her gaze away, before her body followed suit, and she padded out of the den, into the cold, dark night.
She had been abandoned.
Exiled.
She was cold, hungry.
She was alone.
She had gone to the border that day, where she usually met her friends, to find Michael there - the strange look on his face of concern...it was strange, and she was unsure what he said, what noises were made, before she had collapsed, it had all been too much.
When she had awoken, she was in a strange place...somewhere she had never been before, to be met with the faces of Michael and Machelle, while both were worried...they looked happy, too.
She was happy.
She remembered the events of the night before, she missed Mother.
But she knew she wouldn't be allowed back, she wouldn't go back.
She couldn't.
-
And so she gained her name, Balto, and had been taught to speak the noises that Michael and Machelle had made - english, as they called it. And she lived with their help, them teaching her about the vast world outside, about all the different wolves and places, and all the sights to see.
But even with more choices open, even with a fast world and space in front of her.
She missed Mother, she missed her a lot.
She always would.
She would never forget.
But perhaps she would forgive.

- >> relationships
Michael was one of the first wolves that she ever became friends with, of course, along with his twin sister. The two are close in age, so they connected immediently. Even with the fact that now they are adults, and now that this wolf has kids and a mate to care for, she still looks out for him and keeps in contact. Of course, this contact was only recent, as she had lost sight of him for a few years when he ran. She didn't try to find him, and instead tried to comfort Machelle, who was taking the loss badly, never had the two been apart. But the reunion could've gone better, sure they are friends, Ye were friends, but the first few new meetings were awkward, none of them knowing how to react or respond. It was Michael who began talking, just like back in the old day, and she listened, and she learned.
Machelle is her other friend, and also being the twin of Michael, she holds a slightly stronger bond to the female then she does to her brother. Sure, she did meet them at the same time, but maybe it's because that Machelle is the same gender that she is - they're both females, so generally they connect much more then she and Michael would. When Michael had run away from home with no trace, Machelle had been extremely upset, and had gone into a bad state of mind. Balto had been there, trying her best to comfort her friend, like she and Michael had cared for her when they had first met, when she was cold, they cared for her in the snow, and so she was determined to make it up to her friend - for everything she had done for her, she would forever be in her debt, especially for taking her in when her mother cast her out.
Ri is Michael's mate, and honestly...Balto has no idea how she should react to the other wolf. Obviously, the two care for each other, and Ri has gotten Michael out of a few rough patches, when he had run and had left no trace...but there is something about this wolf...she isn't exactly sure why she seems to feel so weary around the scruffy-haired male. She doesn't know him from anywhere else, so she isn't sure, but he just has a certain...aura, something just stands out to her...and what ever it is that stands out, she doesn't like it, not one bit.
Balto has met the children of Ri and Michael - and surprisingly she can name all of them, in order - Anton, Christian, Evelyn, Muffy, Mani, Irene, Red, Peanut, Pepper, Sophie, Layael, Fifi and Kawthar, she likes them, although her favourite would have to be Kawthar, since he is the youngest pup, and she is often asked to look after the pup, which she accepts happily. But she has gotten to know each pup and their mates, and their own pups - she feels proud that her friend, one of her best friends, was able to earn himself such a large family, and although she has seen quarrels between the family, she knows that Michael and Ri care deeply for everyone.
>> theme song
walking away - craig david
I feel that this song really suits her - maybe not so much for personality, but more for what she has gone through and her history. It really describes how she must've felt in that time, and how it affected her as a character.

- >> why did I try
As you can tell by my lovely /or not/ username, I am a huge fan of Balto, as well as other series. Balto was a childhood for me, one that I really loved and enjoyed to watch, and Despite the fact that I haven't watched it frequently, I still really love it, and Balto, the half wolf himself, happened to be my favourite character - of course. I know that I did design this wolf, and it may seem a little unfair if I were to win her because of that matter, but I truely connect her, and am determined to show that while she may look like the original, I will be giving her a unique persoality from that, for the most part, and only keeping the main key things, to show that I'm ready for a fandom based wolf, based on a certain character, and that I'm confident enough that I can give this lovely rpw a home.
