Milo sat close to a lone fire, turning over a tarnished metal sword he had in his hands. Comparing it to the sword he used to own only a few weeks back before he was exiled, this was at a much lower par. With a heavy sigh, he twisted and slid the sword back into its' scabbard, then looked back to the fire. He reached up and rubbed his stubble and hair covered chin, twisting a small braid with his fore finger.

Tala walked out of her tent and into the sleepy morning camp. The sun was rising just over the mountains in the distance, the sky a pale grey. The old ruins around them, silent and still. Her robe swished behind her as she walked swiftly over to the tents, staff in hand.
"Rise and shine," she called out, passing the fresh warden recruit tents, "Today is the day of your Joining Ritual. Grab a hot meal from the fire and head over to Duncans' tent when you're ready." The recruits grumbled, some yelling out complaints. Tala took her staff and gently nudged who were sleeping on blankets outside. "Up, up." she ushered them. As most of the recruits began to stir, she left out a small sigh of relief and pulled her hood up over her head, the wind subtle but felt like ice against her skin. Glancing around, she noticed Milo already up and awake, along with a few more. I rue this day every time it comes she thought bitterly. As of late, not many recruits had made it through the Joining, and their numbers were so few already.

He was awake far before he heard the voice of Tala and pitied those who had to wake up to her rushed greeting. The Grey Warden stood, leaning against a tree, his splintmail armor weighing down all of his movements. Last nigh obviously hadn't granted him much sleep but that was only getting more common the closer this impending blight threatened. But he didn't dwell on that particular thought as he made his way through the camp, doing his fair share of recruit kicking as well, until he stopped beside the shouty Warden. "What? No morning kisses for the recruits today?" he offered a lopsided grin and watched the waking camp with a ready eye. Behind his smile however, there was obvious worry and he was almost completely certain that his companion shared the same concerns. However, no words were need to express them as the dwindling numbers of recruits were expressive enough. In a quieter voice, he spoke, "How many do you suppose'll make it this time?"

Tala looked up at the newbie Warden from under her hood, and her mouth pulled into a small smile.
"Kisses are only for special ones," she teased. The happy emotion faded fast on her face, replaced with a one of ominous air. Her brow sunk and her eyes flicked around the camp, calmly watching the recruits head to the middle of camp for breakfast, an elf serving up hot poached eggs, fresh bread and crispy black bacon.
"I don't know.." she eventually answered in a hushed voice, raising her chin a little bit. Tightening the grip on her staff, she slowly inhaled a deep breath, "All we can do is hope. We have chosen a small, but strong and willing bunch. I just hope we are doing the right thing, and by that I mean, I hope we aren't throwing away lives by choosing the wrong people." Grinding her teeth from the obvious stress, she gently twisted her staff into the ground. The last few recruits she had chosen to bring hadn't made it through their Joining, and feeling responsible, she requested from Duncan to be responsible for training and preparation instead. When she wasn't training, she would leave camp by herself, to go focus on her own abilities, and clear her troubled mind.

"Well, I'm going to be optimistic and hope that they all pass," he smiled at her and and watched the recruits wander around the camp like mindless apes as a few began to receive their meals. They all had the same anxious expression glued onto their faces but it didn't even compare to the look that was plaguing his companion's. And he was almost positive that if she dug her staff any deeper into the earth beneath them, it'd splinter and break. Obviously something had been upsetting her lately but he hadn't thought to ask which was unlike him. However, there were things about himself he didn't care to share and probably never would. But despite his ignorance, he coughed awkwardly, "I'm sure everything will be fine Tala. You better be careful though, any day now and your hair might fall out."

Her mind had began to wander off, her response delayed. Eyebrows snapped up and turned to look at Alistair, "Well...that'll give the dark spawn something to chuckle at." She pulled her staff out of the ground, a little hole was left where she had been digging into the earth. Carefully she brushed the dirt back into the hole and covered it up. A gust of wind tugged at her hood, and she gently grabbed onto it, squinting her eyes as the cold air stung them. An elf came rushing over, wide eyed and out of breath.
"Tala- I mean, commander. The guards at the gate. They say there's been some d-d-disturbances." The elf quickly pointed towards the back gate of the camp, a group of guards huddled by it, swords out.
" A small horde of darkspawn are patrolling the area, and they don't want to risk any of their men before the battle, commander. They wanted me to get you, they said you've been patrolling the Wilds lately, and you may know your way back after they're gone."
Tala narrowed her eyes at the gate, "A small hoard? How many?" she asked quickly.
"About six or seven, commander."
"Stragglers." Tala answered simply. She pulled her hood off of her head, finally giving up as the wind kept relentlessly tugging at it. Glancing at Alistair she asked, "I can take care of them myself, maybe my hair will come if all this wind back fires one of my spells." She grinned and lifted her hand, snapping her thumb and forefinger, a small red flame appeared at the end of her finger tips, and quickly distinguished in a puff of smoke when a small breeze rolled by.

The news of the darkspawn had the hairs on the back of his neck stand up by the way this man was positively freaked out. Honestly, he looked like a mouse. It was adorable. But when he heard how few of them there were, Alistair watched in amusement as the light of battle and action lit aflame in the commander's eyes. And when she made statement of taking care of the stragglers herself, he chuckled all the more. "Yes, by all means, go running into battle the lone wolf. What a touching resolve," he unsheathed his Warden's longsword, the sunlight glinting off the newly shined surface, "I can't let you have all the glory though, can I?" By no means did he want to be left behind in the dust. When people remembered his name he'd rather they think something more then, 'Oh yes, Alistair. I've heard of him. He had great hair.' So with a grin he added, "What do you say, care for some company at least?"

Her eyes gleamed with amusement when he called her a lone wolf, and she smirked, "Well if you'd rather kill some darkspawn than stand around like a lone pup all day in camp, come along." Grinning, she began making her way over to the gate. "It occurs to me," she began and looked over at Alistair, curiosity lingering in her voice, "That I've never actually seen you in combat before." Tala nodded at the long sword in his hand, "You know which end to hold at least." she joked, teasingly. As they approached the guards, Tala could hear them yelling at each other, each exclaiming at who should go outside first to see if the darkspawn were still there. The fear is making them hysterical. And the worst is yet to come. she thought, her hazel eyes sharp, one brow raised.
