Charlotte | Reef Tribe | Tagging, Lydia, Xemara, Annabelle, Sam
"Lydia..." Charlie said, looking at the boy in her arms. He was soaking, pale, confused, and painfully human. Dread settled like a weight in her stomach. She didn't want to kill him.
"You're my queen. I love you, I trust you," she began. "But if you save his life, we'll have to drive you away. Or else we'll all be disgraced." Her eyes welled with tears as the words spilled from her. She didn't want to have anyone but Lydia be queen.
"Please. I'll do it, I'll take him far away. Just let me kill him," she begged.
Ekene | Queen of the Lowcountry Tribe | Tagging Talia, Judith
"Well, you know you're always welcome here," Ekene said. "How about we and find Constella, and tell her the good news?" She looked over at Talia. "The tribe's small, only the three of us; well, four now." She laughed too loudly for it to be authentic. "It'll be good to have another voice when we sink ships."
There the subject was. Music. Jealousy bubbled in Ekene's gut. Not many mermaids had a voice as strong as hers, and usually she was unrivaled. But Judith was the only mermaid Ekene had ever heard whose voice stood a chance against hers. Ekene couldn't deny her a place in the tribe, it was in the timahk, not to mention common courtesy. But Ekene would have to make sure her position as queen was secure.
