Well, I'm not completely sure myself. I just found out to use them for coloring more easier. This is what I did: First I went on layer 2 and filled in a part of the picture with the can of paint. Then I went to layer 1 and went over the edges that weren't covered, and it doesn't go over the layer 2! Sorry if it isn't clear ;-; Anyway, thank you! :D
