First Task:
Alaska and I sit on the floor playing with a rope toy when my phone rings. I spring up and go rummaging through my piles to find it. Aha, there it is, I think to myself before answering.
"Hello?" I say. Caller ID isn't showed a name, just some unfamiliar number. It sucks not knowing whose calling, for all I know it could be some weirdo trying to sell me something. No thanks.
"Hello! We have documents saying you adopted," she pauses for a second, "Alaska from us. Is that correct?"
I nodded, then realized she couldn't see that from the phone. "Yeah," I mumble. They couldn't possibly try to take Alaska away from me, could they? I refuse to let her go after all we've been through together.
"Well, we've just got word that a rabbit from the same place Alaska came from is coming in now. Would you be interested in coming down to look at him?" she asks. I can hear the anxiety in her voice. So they aren't coming for Alaska, I think to myself, I might as well look at the rabbit. Alaska could use someone else around.
"Oh, of course!" I giggle. "I'll be there right away!" and with that, I hang up.
"Alaska! Here bunny-bunny!" I call out, "Alaskaaaaa!" She scampers over, and stares up at me with her orange eyes. I pick her up and carry her to the car. I set her in the front seat, and start the car. "We're going to go look at another rabbit, Alaska. Maybe you'll have a friend! Wouldn't that be fun?" Her nose twitches slightly, and I can't tell if she understands me or not. I giggle at the idea of it, it sounds pretty silly after all.
We finally arrive at the shelter; the air smells strongly of cleaning supplies. "Hello?" I call out, as I stand at the desk searching for anyone in the area. Just then the lady I spoke to on the phone walks in. She scans me, before she says hello and tells me to follow her to the back. I do just that, and I'm surprised to see this crossbreed in front of me, just caked in muck. It's so bad, I can't even see his eyes. I wince, feeling bad for this poor boy.
"Has anyone else bothered to look at him?" I ask, the curiousity getting to me.
"Yes," the lady says, "many have, but we want to make sure he has the perfect home this time. He had a home before, but he was brought back. Like I said, we have several people who want to take him home. Should I add you to the list?"
I nod, and she writes down my name. "We'll call you if he goes to you," she said with a smile. I get in the car and drive home, thinking about how others were interested in the same guy. How could they not? He's handsome, I think to myself. I get home and immediately start to pace. The waiting has begun.
Weeks have passed, and I haven't gotten a call. I slump in my seat, a bit disappointed. Alaska hops over and nudges my hand, and I can't help but give her a rub. Here I was, so set on getting her a friend, but instead I fail her. But for some reason, she doesn't seem to mind. I giggle a bit and take her out for a walk. After running around a couple blocks, Alaska and I head home exhausted. I set her leash on the table as I notice my phone. A missed phone call.
I call back quickly, not wasting a second. When they answer I hear a familiar voice saying, "Hello?"
"Hello!" I nearly scream. "You called me?"
"Yes, we did. We're pleased to say that the buck will be going home with you if you'd still like him."
"YES," I screech, then immediately apologize. "I'm so sorry, but yes, I'll take him!" I hang up, grab Alaska and we drive to the shelter. I sign the paperwork and we bring the skittish buck home with us. He needed work, but I was sure he'd be worth it like Alaska was.
