emmett awoke to silence. he climbed out of his "bed" which was really just a hammock hanging from the ceiling. the boy walked across the second story, holding onto the red-painted, peeling railing and peering over the edge. he stepped out of the broken window and pulled himself onto the roof of the abandoned building the group called home, where he sat quietly, looking at all the cars rushing through the busy street below. the city was a crazy place, with crazy people. he always reminded everyone of the group to watch out for people every time they went out.

a thin beam of sunlight streamed through the window. seilene groaned inwardly as she looked around at the other hammocks. a few soft snores came from some, and all but one is occupied.
emmetts.
his was empty, as usual.
seilene decided to leave. she slowly swung her legs out of her hammock and set her feet on the cold floor, careful not to make a sound. her bare legs were greeted bitterly with the chilly morning air. she tugged on the cuffs of her sweater, shivering slightly.
she considered wandering, but she knew she didn't need to wander if she was going to find emmett.
she knew where he would be.
seilene tiptoed through the door and out into the small hallway. she eyed the broken window at the end of the hall, drawing out the way she would get through in her mind.
to her surprise, she slid through effortlessly.
emmett sat quietly on the roof, eyes fixed on the passing cars and figures below.
"good morning," she said quietly, trying not to startle him.
