"By Blue Magic," Charlotte said, using the nickname they'd invented for the reef closet to their cave. "I think I might've found a new reef yesterday. We could check it out! It's hard to find good places that aren't crawling with humans."
Charlie loved to explore reefs. It was her favorite thing to do. She spent hours swimming through the water in quiet fascination of the marine life. She loved all the colorful fish. She had even tamed a few cuttlefish. They ate out of her hands, and swam with her while she explored. Whenever she approached the reef they lived at, they swam up to greet her eagerly. She made an effort to go around to all the reefs so eventually, the animals would know and trust her completely. It was a passion she and Elizabeth shared.
"We can always work our way through the reefs," Charlie said, nodding to Elizabeth.

Ekene lifted her head regally. "Hmm, that is always an option," she said, looking down at Constella with a grin. She soaked up the attention with delight. It felt good to be queen of a tribe that understood how powerful her song was. "But we ought to scope boats out before we get a plan in place. It depends on how many of them there are. If we try to sink a tourist boat, we'd all have to sing together."
Ekene knew the two younger mermaids enjoyed singing with her. Ekene enjoyed it greatly herself. The merging of their voices was the ultimate bond. The only downfall was that Ekene wasn't in the spotlight.

Annabelle's eyes widened in surprise. "Are you serious?" she asked. "You've heard singing? You've heard them?!" As soon as the last sentence shot out of her mouth, Annabelle immediately regretted it. She took a deep breath, trying to appear calm. "Where did you hear these voices?"
