Please don't but an animal without doing the research first. I know you have good intentions but they should get everything they need right away and it should already be at home before you get the animal.

For food I would suggest Hazel Hamster. It has everything they need and more! It's very healthy and has enough protein which many brands don't.

I hope your hammie will get lots of loving ( as I'm sure you will give ) and plenty of space to play <3

I doubt im doing anything wrong. I had hamsters before so i had the cage and all that already.

---------------------------------
I have 2 old box's and I am going to make a big play place for my hammie, its all made of cardboard so I will throw it out once it trashes it (chews or goes) And it will have climbing things and a little cave to sleep in with some fluff for comfort, and a food bowl, and some water just in case it gets snacky, in case your going to ask I would NEVER EVER leave it unsupervised or in the same room as my cats EVER. EVER! And it will have some toys if I get some hamster toys at walmart when we go. It will be great! It will be kinda boring since my mom said paper is bad if it chews on it, but hey a healthy ham is better then a pretty box that will just get thrown away anyway right? What do you guys think, will Toki Doki like it? Thats my hamsters name BTW.

May I join? (:

@darkvodoo: oooh, I cannot wait to see pictures in around a week, when they have fur and everything. They are very adorable.

This will be my newest furry addition. <3 She will be moving out with me in four weeks. (Will pick her up on August 28 already, though)

Image

Bought her an (at least) 100 cm long cage, with a height of about 60cm. I hope she will love it. :3
Image

Everything inside will be out of wood, no worries. Including a big wheel (24 cm I think?) . No plastic will come close to her, except for ground, which will be filled with lots of hay and bedding.

Any name ideas 8D? She is a dwarf hamster.

PS: I've had lots of rodents before. Including rats, mice, bunnies and guinea pigs. I do enjoy tipps about self-made toys, though! :)

Woke up this morning to find the chinchilla cage covered in blood.
Minnie's managed to cut her foot on a sharp bit of wood on her nest box, where it's been chewed.

She's fine, been running around & eating as normal, she's just sulking because we've taken the box out XD
Will be getting her a new one this week.

Now have to figure out how to get the bloodstains out of the wood shelves. I highly doubt my hemophobia will cope with the state they're in, and I don't want to test it.
Can't replace them, because they're fixed onto the cage, and I have no idea how to get them off, without breaking the cage. If we can't et the stains out, may have to be new cage time. I've been wanting a new, bigger cage for me, might just have to perfect excuse XD
Anyone have any ideas how to get it out?

Ehmergerd, dem little baby dumbo ears! They're so adorable!
Also totally need to steal those tri mice.

@ Fuzzyrainbowkittys

Never use fluff bedding. It is extremely dagerous to hamsters, it can cause all sorts of potentially fatal injuries, from broken limbs to intestinal blockages.

@ Julia

That cage looks awesome! Do you know what brand it is?
She's adorable :) What kind of dwarf is she? She kind of looks more like a tiny baby Syrian.

@CSWolf: Thank you <3 <3

@spiderfish: Ahhh, I am so glad that your Chin is fine. :c
Did you try removing the bloodstains with water? I know there is some cleaning stuff that is not harmful to pets, maybe this would help?

Maybe you could help me figuiring out the breed? This is the mommy
I didn't want to support pet shops this time, the owner of my new girl is neither a breeder, I think the babies were unwanted because she bought her pregnant. She told me they were dwarf hamster, but it could be that she is wrong.

ok guys I am going to start the hamster house now, I am using tape to hold stuff together because IDK if my cra-z-art whasable school glue would some how hurt toki doki. I am like SUPER worried that I might do something wrong of give it something that can hurt it. It says no harmful fumes, and I would HOPE its non-toxic, but IDK if that applys to hamster to so I will just use tape. Would you guys like a picture of it in the house when its done?

Also how to I tell if its a boy or girl, the lady at the pet store didn't tell me :l And I don't like calling it 'it'

also, we shop at walmart and where going tomorrow so what kind of food should I get?

@spiderfish- the tri/splash mice dont seem to what to reproduce :( I dont know all their ages, so all in the cage are to be bred one time, then they will be retired, but a few look pregnant, then all of a sudden they dont.
Im crossing my fingers out of the 3 babies, one is blue or pearl. So far they still look light, so hopefully they arent black. Im keeping the girl for sure.

As for removing the blood, I use a (tooth) brush soaked in white vinegar sprinkled with baking soda. It takes scrubbing power, but it works and is safe for small critters.
peroxide can be used as well.

You aren't using the cardboard as an actual full-time cage, are you?

The cardboard is a one or two time use place because I wanted to do something with the empty boxes i had, the cage i have now is from petco (or smart idk) but i want a new one because its small. :( my poor Toki has no room to run. But it has a built in wheel so thats good, its just so small it can hardly move it ;-;

You should buy a big wheel sooner or later, small wheels are very bad for the back of a hamster. (: They also need a lot of space to run. I bought mine a cage with a length of one meter. It doesn't have to be that big, but shouldn't be a lot smaller either (like 50-60cm). (: Plastic can also be harmful to your baby, I always go for wood. If you have any questions about hamsters/rodents in general, feel free to ask. (: Not everything has to be 100% perfect, but there are some things that can improve the life of your lovely pet.
