~ INTO THE DEEP ~
Based on "The Lost Voices" series by Sarah Porter

Legends of mermaids have existed for hundreds of years. Some say they are sirens, others claim they are goddesses. Some speculate that they're simply a branch of man that evolved in water rather than land. The truth is: mermaids are lost girls. Those abandoned, abused, and maimed by mankind are given a new form and welcomed into the sea. They can travel miles with their strong, beautiful tails. They can entrance humans with their other-worldly voices. They will never age, and can live forever, if they're careful enough. They live in tribes, led by a queen, who has the most powerful song. They spend their days sinking human ships, taking revenge against mankind for all the suffering they endured.
Guidelines
All mermaids obey the timahk, a set of ancient rules. The timahk is relatively simple.
>First, no mermaid can hurt another.
>Second, no mermaid may be banished from a tribe unless she has broken the timahk.
>Third, any mermaid who wishes to join a tribe is to be welcomed.
>Fourth, If another mermaid is in trouble, you must do your best to help her, unless interfering could get you killed.
>And fifth, no contact with humans. Any human who hears the mermaid's song must die.
Mermaids are made when a human commits an unspeakable act of cruelty upon a young girl. No mermaids are older than eighteen, or younger than eight. And boys cannot become mermaids (though I'll allow trans characters! if they identify as a girl, they count as a girl in the rules of transformation!)
When a mermaid first transforms, her entire body turns into liquid. If she is far from an ocean, the magic of transformation will guide her to the nearest body of water. Basically, they'll get to the water.
Mermaid song is unlike any music humans are capable of creating. It is otherworldly and angelic. Hearing it puts humans into a trance, and if the song is happy enough, they are more than happy to jump into the water and drown. Very few humans can resist mermaid song.
For simplicity, we're going to rate the power of a mermaid's song on a ten point scale. Most queens will rate about an eight. A two or a three is an exceptionally poor singer. Most mermaids will be somewhere between a four and a six. There are a few mermaids that rank eleven or twelve, but these mermaids are thousands of years old, legendary, and will not be roleplayed unless we decide to work that into the plot. Though singing cannot be taught, an older mermaid usually will be better at it than a younger one.
A metaskaza is a term for a newly formed mermaid. A sika is a term for a mermaid who has no feeling, or is sociopathic.
If a mermaid's tail is exposed to open air, it begins to dry out. The process is excruciatingly painful. Many mermaids have attempted to transform back into humans through this method, but the odds of surviving the change back are miniscule. The pain becomes so intense, it stops your heart.
Mermaids are incredibly beautiful, unnaturally so. There is a dark aura around each mermaid only other mermaids can see. This aura, if looked at correctly, shows the event that drove a mermaid to change.

Human Form
You can roleplay humans who are in an abusive situation and will eventually become mermaids. Also humans who cared for someone who was turned into a mermaid and seemingly "disappeared". Or someone who heard the mermaid's song and survived. Or someone determined to discover that mermaids are in fact, real. Or a mermaid who tried to change back into a human and succeeded. I don't want too many humans, though.
