Walking over to Cole, I rummaged around in my kit. Luckily, I'd put everything in sealed plastic bags since we were on a cruise, so everything seemed intact. Taking out some bandages and disinfectant, I took Cole's hand. "I'm going to have to bind this fairly tightly. You won't be able to move it much, and we need to make sure it's in the right position."

I relaxed at her comments, her imput meaning more to me than it should. At least she didn't think I was useless. And she was right, trying to be helpful now would be pointless if it just made me less helpful in the future.

"Okay," Cole responded distantly, his mind elsewhere. He began to formulate strategies in his head regarding how to defend themselves, where to camp out, and how to find food. The river was a good source of fish, but they would eventually need fruits and vegetables as well. If he searched deep enough in the forest, they might find a fruit tree...

Natalie leaned her head back against the cave wall. The space had enough room for about three people to sleep, but it could be a bit cramped. She focused on keeping her breathing steady instead of letting her mind wander. In...out... Her fingers curled around each other, turning white from squeezing so hard. She would never admit it, but she was thoroughly terrified. The idea of remaining on the island turned her blood cold. She thought she would never see her family again, never hear her mother's voice as it chastised her for not completing her chores, not listen to her father's whistle as he cooked dinner ever again... In, out. In, out.

I wrapped the bandages around Cole's hand tightly. "I think that we'll want to avoid fishing out of the ocean. We don't have enough supplies, and we can't risk anyone getting hurt, especially in the ocean. Given the biodiversity I've seen so far, I think we can probably find some dandelions at least. That will provide some sustenance, as well as fishing out of the river. We might be lucky enough to find some wild raspberries and blueberries, and wild onions. Honestly, my biggest concern right now is shelter."

I took my blanket and poked my head into the cave where Natalie was. "I'm going to get some sleep, since I guess there's nothing I can do to help." I kissed her forehead and curled up under my blanket in a corner. As I fell asleep, my eyes flew open. What did I just do?

Cole released a deep breath as she wrapped his hand, his chest expanding while he breathed in again. "I was thinking the same thing." Once she was done applying the binding, he flexed his fingers, groaning when the bandage seemed to be working against his hand. They were only a few gashes, after all. There were probably worse wounds out there that needed to be treated. "We'll get a jump start on collecting food and scavenging for shelter in the morning. Just go tend to the other injuries around here." He stood and walked back to his crevice, surprised to find a blanket sitting on the ground waiting for him. He spread the fabric across the unforgiving ground and leaned his head back, trusting the still-warm stones to keep him from getting cold throughout the night.

Natalie's eyes widened slightly at the gesture, and they followed him to the corner where he settled down under his blanket. She lightly skimmed her fingers over the place on her forehead where he had kissed her, as it was now tingling from the millisecond of warmth. She blinked and looked down, deciding it was exhaustion causing Ryan to be delirious. They all should be disorientated at this point. She didn't blame him. Instead of saying anything, she lowered her body to the ground and hugged her knees to her chest in a sideways fetal position. In the midst of making sure everyone else had a blanket, she had forgotten to provide herself with one. However, the warm summer air was enough to prevent a shiver from running down her spine as her skin touched the cave floor.

((We could jump to the morning and then practically everyone would be open because they'd all be going off in groups to do different things like hunt, another group to find a decent place for shelter, and another for looking for edible plants or something like that? ))

Cole woke with a start, disoriented for a moment. Within ten seconds, the memories came flooding back and he sat up abruptly, rubbing the back of his head with a grimace. He climbed out of his small crevice and found a smooth stone to stand on. His eyes scanned across the survivors, who were all starting to stir. Clearing his throat, he lifted his voice, "Okay, guys, it's a new day. The first morning we've woken up on this island. Today, we need to be organized. We'll divide into groups, one led by me to find sources of food in the forest, and another led by Ariani to find a decent, temporary shelter. These rocks are susceptible to rising water levels as well as open attacks by any predators."

Natalie lifted her eyelids slowly as the sunlight poured into the cave, causing her to cover her face with an arm. She lifted her head when Cole's voice reached her and crawled towards the entrance, poking her head out to listen to what he had to say. When he began to list off who was in which group, relief flitted across her heart when she was placed in Ariani's.
