[list]Cole relaxed in bed, stretching. He winced as several body parts cracked loudly. The training was really getting to him, with only one break day a week.
Hey, Mia was right, reflected Cole. Its better than last week. Cole sat up in bed and looked out the window. The sun had barely gone down, leaving just a faint strawberry glow remains to remind everyone where it'd been. A few stars sprinkled the navy sky.
The PA system on his roof buzzed loudly and Cole's head flashed up, as though he could only hear the voice if he looked at it. Shae's voice sounded hurried and anxious.
"Cole, Orion, to the dock."
Cole barely had a moment to register what was happening when Orion streaked in, grabbing him by the arm.
"C'mon, we're late!" She said, dragging him down the corridors.
"What?" Protested Cole. "We only heard the message a few seconds ago!"
"Well, if you were sitting in bed when I came in, then we're late," responded Orion as Cole fell into step beside her. Orion shoved open a metal door and they stood on the dock in the cool evening air.
"I didn't know this door led right to the dock," said Cole, peering into the choppy waters.
"And now you do," snapped Orion, leading him toward Shae, who stood at the end.
Note to self, Coke told himself. Orion can be crabby when... This happens. Whatever this is.
Cole's black hair blew away from his face as he stood beside Orion, who'd snapped to attention.
"All right." Shae examined the two. "There's a villain in the city. Only you two are going, so Orion can show you the works and whatnot. Like most 'villains' this guy doesn't have natural powers- they can explode anything within ten feet of them. Anything that isn't metal. Luckily, the jail is made of steel." Cole felt butterflies form in his stomach.
Just the two of us? He thought frantically. Shae wrapped up his speech.
"Just remember the no killing policy. Knock 'em out or something, then leave them for the police to lock up."
Before Cole had a chance to react, Orion had tugged him off the dock, resulting in a splash.
"You could have warned me!" Spluttered Cole as Orion hauled him back out.
"Sorry." Cole noticed she'd already clicked out her wings and was hovering above him, thrusters keeping her in place.
"Whatever. It's fine." Cole got into position with Orion and soon the two were streaking toward the city side by side. It was obvious where the villain was. Piercing screams and sirens flooded the air and explosions rocked the evening. Orion didn't seem scared.
The two landed in the shadow of a crumbling, abandoned building. Cole hadn't noticed the storm clouds ahead, but now he felt a light drizzle, soaking his head.
Dressed in a black jumpsuit and a leering clown mask, it was obvious by the villain's build that she was a girl. A thin black cape fluttered behind her like water.
Talk about overdoing it, thought Cole. Lame as the dress up was, there was an aura of violence around her, like she wouldn't hesitate to kill anyone in her way. Orion didn't wait for the clown lady to make her move. Stepping out into the middle of the street, she whistled loudly. Brown eyes narrowed behind the mask.
The ground exploded in front of Orion and she jumped backward, raising an eyebrow.
"That isn't all you got, is it?" She asked. Cole caught her drift. Lure her into a blind rage so the deranged killer wouldn't know what she was doing. The asphalt road exploded with a phoom, louder than in movies. Cole was relieved to see that Orion had shot up into the sky, narrowly missing the dangerous attack.
For the first time, she noticed him. The black cape fluttered wildly as she ran with the speed of a deer. It was obvious the villain wasn't meant for strength but speed instead. Cole set up a blistering wall of fire, shielding himself from her wrath. The earth exploded and he was thrown backward, landing with a sickening crunch against a wall. She looked over him, expression cold with hate. Cole never saw Orion behind her. One second the villain was there, ready to kill, the next she was lifeless on the ground, a spear of shadow stabbed through her chest.[list]
