▒▒xx xxImagine if oceans were forests.
▒▒xx xxThe farther you go into the forest, the taller the trees become. The animals get bigger
▒▒xx xxand bigger and the the light quickly fades. You could walk across it, but no human has
▒▒xx xxever managed. Think of all the unraveled mysteries. Think of how that would drive
▒▒xx xx our species absolutely crazy. Nothing bigger than a person on their stomach can get
▒▒xx xxthrough the mysterious invisible barrier. It's not like we could cut the trees down, much
▒▒xx xxless kill the animals that only get more terrifying.
▒▒xx xxStill the government will not stop in it's pursuit of the mysteries that lie within the trees.
▒▒xx xxIt is within that pursuit that you meet Maia.

"I'll bet you anything that she's the one," came the honey-like voice of a middle-aged women.
"$100 dollars on it, then?" a deep, gravely voice of a man spoke.
The woman smiled while the man cracked a smirk. Their hands met in a quick shake before both turned back to the screens, sure of their bet.
The girl they were talking about was your ordinary person with an extraordinary destiny. Her brown hair was shoulder length and her dull green eyes were nothing sort of ugly. They were ugly to her at least. She wore brown clothing made from the scraps that her mother could afford, and her shoes were so torn in the soles they couldn't be considered true shoes any longer. The only possession the girl had that she was prideful of was her bow. It was always pulled over her shoulder, and her quiver always was with her.
She had been watched since she was young, for the moment she was born a long howl had risen into the air, louder and more beautiful than any howl they had ever heard from the forest.
Unlike the usual, no one had been near the fence. It was the only time a howl had ever been heard where a 15 year old person hadn't been resting up against the magical barrier that kept most from coming into the biggest forest there was. It was the only time that same teenager hadn't immediately after the howl fallen through the barrier to never return. This time there had been no one near. Not even an adult or toddler.
Still, two houses down the rode from the forest there had been a girl born. A baby girl who was still unaware of her destiny. Many doubted that the two had anything to do with one another, and many were angry that some random poor folk got the privileged of being honored by the government. Many also didn't care. Many also believed.
The middle-aged government women staring into the camera that showed Maia's whereabouts believed she would truly get through the barrier with the piece of copper string they were about to give her. She believed that this girl was special, knowing that she had been through some amazing encounters with wolves and had loved them from the day she was born.
The reason today was special, the reason the woman was placing the bet, was because today was Maia's 15th birthday. Just this morning they had informed her of her life being watched, informed her of how important it was to hold onto the copper string they were going to give her, and informed her that she would likely fall through the barrier when she touched it. Maia of course was scared, but she realized that in those woods were wolves, and nothing had ever fascinated her more than wolves. She wanted to meet them, even if it caused her death.
She didn't know what the government really wanted out of the forest, she just knew that humans were too curious for their own good. The woman knew Maia didn't know the truth but the woman knew that the wolves would teach it to the 15 year old. She believed and hoped that they were there, waiting for Maia. The one girl that could change everything.
Everyone held their breath as Maia walked expectantly up to where she knew the invisible barrier lay. They stopped in anticipation as she outstretched her hand to it and took in a shuddering breath. Just as they became scared she wouldn't touch it, her shaking hand brushed the barrier.
They began to see a flash of silver that danced around Maia, sucking her in. They gasped as they realized the difference between this and the other disappearances. The woman, though, simply furrowed her brow, trying to study the scene.
Then the cameras malfunctioned. All five of them. Seconds later, the power also went out.
There were screams and people fumbling around everywhere. The woman stood calmly, watching to see if any of the cameras would still show her anything. She stood for minutes on end, ignoring all the people who left the room and all the people calling for her. Suddenly the camera flickered, showing for a brief second that Maia was beyond the barrier, looking surprised. The woman furrowed her brow and let out a small gasp as she saw what Maia was staring at. In the woods, she saw, for the first time, two gleaming green eyes and the silhouette of a powerful wolf.
That was all before the camera flickered out again.
Without any fear, the woman turned to her bet partner who was shaking vividly.
She held out a hand, "I'd like my $100 please. Also, would you like to bet $1000 she lives?" her eyebrows raised and her smirk was not seen in the darkness of the control room.
