Maple changed the subject. "You have a pretty name," she offered, smiling at Starlight. "But why does everyone but me and that other dog have wings?" she asked, still thinking they were all dogs.

Maple looked confused. "What's a wolf?" she asked.

Maple blinked. "But I like deer and bunnies and baby birds!" she said, on the brink of crying.

"They're fun to chase, but not to eat," Maple said. "Don't you eat doggie chow, like me?"

"Doggie chow! It's got lots of flavors. There's lamb, beef, chicken, and salmon. My people even put out some doggie chow for that weird-looking dog who lives with us. He's smaller than me, with a really long tail! He can jump really high too, and when I bite him he makes this fnny noise and hits me!" chattered Maple.

Maple poked at her collar, and a tiny pocket in it opened and a little pebble of puppy chow fell out. "I was saving this for in case I got hungry, but you can have it! It's beef flavor."

"Hello! I'm Maple, what's your name?" asked Maple, looking at Angel.

"Oh, okay!" Maple said. "Are you a doggie like me, or a.. w.. wolf like everyone else?"

Maple looked sad. "And you all eat birdies and bunnies and deer?"

[debris]

Maple started to cry. "Bunnies and birdies and deer is my friends!" she wailed. "And you don't like me!"
