I hate SAO as well, I'm with cleric. It actually like makes my skin crawl to watch it. It's one of my least favorite anime that I have ever watched, reserved on a special tier of hatred that is nearly unreachable.

First of all the romance in it is so poorly written it's disgusting. Like there is no drama, there is ZERO character development from it. It's just like "oh hi im boy main character and you're girl main character lets be in love and get married" - it's the quality of stuff you see in the crappy romance novels you see on the shelves at grocery stores. The conflict that is there is so just thrown together and meaningless. There's no build up where you're aching for them to get together. It was just obsessive and stalkery, and they're just on the path to happily ever after from like the moment they meet.

And then every other character also seemed to be madly in love with the main character for no reason? He is just written as this perfect Mary Sue character who everyone loves and wants to be with. Even though he's never really seen doing anything to warrant that kind of affection, like his personality isn't particularly charming or anything? It was on par with some of the worst harem anime I've ever watched. The main character just ISNT THAT GREAT? He was always super strong compared to the others and he was always right and always knew what to do. He had nothing that made him interesting and I never found myself routing for him. It'd make sense if he was some funny super kind and charming guy, and his personality really swept girla off their feet. But the other characters wanted to be with him for no other reason then the writer wants us to see how cool and awesome and perfect they think the main character is. It was very Bella from Twilight. People don't work like that in real life. I have zero suspension of disbelief when it comes to things like that.

I mean it literally felt like I was watching Pokemon, except instead of the trainer of the day in each episode it was like girlfriend of the day for Kirito. And don't even get me started how misogynistic it all is. Every character that started out ok was then a total damsel in distress and completely made useless by getting hurt or kidnapped or whatever. The girls never really helped saved the day, even Asuna. She was always the object of the quest, never the hero herself.

The pacing was a mess too. Like there'd be a story arc where it was fast-paced and then the next episode would start some long drawn out filler crap that was boring and made no importance to the overall plot.

To me the whole thing was a train wreck. Like I said, one of my least favorites, if not THE least favorite. I wasn't gona bring up my opinion but then Shanks asked so I just had to.

Well, regardless of whether people hate SAO like it, the author certain has achieved something incredible as everyone knows the title of his work and at least the most basic things about it. People that like the series watch it because we think it's awesome. And half the haters out there watch it simply so that they can continue the hate. With both of these groups combined together, the popularity of SAO is through the roof.

The fact that it can spark debates that are pages long certain is a feat in and of itself, but perhaps at this point, we all can just agree to disagree?

if anyone has seen it, does kaneki start acting like his old self in season two?
or do you have to wait till season three? or...

oh and, does hide ever find out kaneki's a ghoul?
i know I'm spoiling for myself but I'm loosing interest,
and i really do love this plot that it had.

Season two was iffy,
I personally loved Tokyo Ghoul,
but taking everything into consideration,
It wasn't as good as it could have been

the fact that they strayed from the manga was a huge gamble on the anime creator's part,
and like Giant said,
Kaneki' literally only there for about 20-40 minutes of the ENTIRE SHOW
and to answer some questions,

Kaneki just gets stronger,
but ends up suffering mental damage in the process

I haven't seen the last episode,
but from what I could tell,
Hide did in fact find out that Kaneki was a ghoul
I still have an episode to watch so I don't know

Kaneki doesn't ever go back to his old self,
which I'm somewhat happy with
don't get me wrong, I think kurokaneki was adorable
but how wimpy he acted at times sorta made me drop the series for awhile..

As I stated above,
I personally loved Tokyo ghoul
and reccomend you watch it as long as you're willing to see less of the main character as well as rather boring episodes that seem to be there for space as the creators think up a plot(aka FILLER) and everything seeming to be slow but then rushed at the very last episodes

I know that some of the episodes I dubbed to be "boring" probably had a good amount of info that I probably needed to know,
but it honestly didn't interest me
I just wanted to know what was going on with Kaneki,
I didn't give a damn about what was going on with Touka or the creepy albino's(forgot his name) past

I'll just leave Glass Reflection's suggestion that you stream it rather than buy it or ignore it

but i do love wimpy him, it gives him more personality and he has weakness.
i like it better then "everything that tries to fight me i kill." kaneki.
its was nice that old kaneki wasn't able to beat extremely strong opponents,
and needed help from others, it made some nice scenes.
season three just came out so I'm quite excited to see if they fix what they
did due to the fans throwing hissyfits at the show created and such.
i most likely missed where hide found out if it was in season one.

ill keep watching to see what happens but i am quite upset about how,
over powered they made him.

alright, i have a LOT of feelings about tokyo ghoul, so i hope you don't mind if i seem kinda longwinded!!

DON'T WATCH THE ANIME. I REPEAT, DO NOT WATCH THE ANIME.
it disempowers all of the formerly strong female characters, makes kaneki seem like an imbecile even though he was actually extremely smart, portrays tsukiyama a big joke with no character development, and in general is much worse than the manga.

even if you don't like/read manga, i highly suggest reading it, as it is much better!! touka's whole personality doesn't just revolve around kaneki, tsukiyama actually learns to care for other people and is very sweet and heartfelt, etc. i could keep going on but i don't want to bore you!!

also, for the record, in the manga, kaneki does sorta revert back to his old personality!! (emphasis on sorta)

have you ever seen that guy with the white AND black hair around?? his name's haise sasaki?? yeah, that dude is kaneki, with his memories wiped. he works for the ccg BUT HE IS BACK TO BEING VERY SWEET AND SENSITIVE
HIS SUBORDINATES LITERALLY CALL HIM MAMAN IT IS SO CUTE

but ye just read tokyo ghoul and tokyo ghoul:re you won't regret it
