Vinerst [♂] ---------- and ----------- Naylin [♀]
The eccentric zoologist and his exotic specimen"Day thirteen in the mountains.
Fazar is out gathering supplies." The wolf's black eyes strayed back to the subject of his excitement before returning the the hand held recorder in his velvety red paws. "I have spotted the creature. It appears to be stalking it's prey, much like a cat." He clicked the pause button with an ivory claw and replaced it in the snow at his side, grabbing his binoculars and peering intently at the beast, some strange mix between a snow leopard and his own species, a wolf. He looked up as snow began to fall again crouched down, letting the gentle white flakes fall evenly onto his bright red pelt. They would help disguise him behind this scrubby bush, an all red wolf in a sea of bright snow would stand out like a giraffe's head on a mouse. He laughed inwardly at the image that appeared in his head.
A squeak of suprise drew his attention back to the strange cross-breed, which had just taken down its prey, a snowy white rabbit. The wolf-cat's spotted white pelt was perfectly camoflauged, aside from the rabbit's blood now on her muzzle. Vinerst often had trouble finding it again when he glanced away. He must remember to write that down.
As the creature settled down to feast on it's prize, the zoologist let the binoculars fall back onto his chest, tugging at the string which secured it around his neck. Scooping up the recorder, he rose, the snow on his back falling into a pile around him and turned, intending to sneak away. Instead, he snapped a twig. funny how these things seem to happen, whenever you need to sneak away, no matter where you are. A month ago in the jungle, a couple months before that in the desert, mere weeks away in the middle of a pine forest. And now, on a mountain, trying to creep away from a viscious predator. Just great.
He turned in time to see the animal raise her head and hop to her feet, her icy eyes glaring directly into his coal black ones, then speed toward him like a bottle rocket. He yelped, almost dropping the recorder, and turned tail, his paws skidding in a frozen puddle. Vinerst quickly regained his footing and ran like his life depended on it. Because it did.
It was far past night fall by the time he made it back to the lodge. He pushed open the wooden door to be greeted by a worried assistant. "You're back! I thought you'd got yourself eaten!"
"Pity I hadn't." He dropped the recorder in Fazar's paws and waved his green companion away, throwing his hat and scarf to the floor. He knew Fazar was upset about being up in the mountains over the holdiays rather than at home with his family, but this was exciting, and Vinerst didn't really care. He had no family to miss.
After a long night of being chased and giving chase, he settled into his bed, gentle snoring soon filling the room.
It was around midnight when he was awakened by a soft rustling. He lay there for a moment, being a light sleeper it might have just been a branch waving in the wind outside.
No, definately not a branch he noted as the window slid open. He sat up, fur along his spine bristling as he adopted a protective position. A white figure dove through the opening, rolling once accross the floor before it hopped up, accompanied by a cold burst of wind. Her lips pealed back into a snarl and he found himself staring into the eyes of his hunter from hours earlier. Too bad the only thing he could think to say was,
"I forgot to write that you were so big."
It's pretty bad, but my muse flew south for the winter. It got scared away by the snow
