Im looking for something for Mugger once he is older
Didn't you say that you thought barn hunt was very cruel and that you would never ever do it?
Your club certainly sounds like it does a lot of things outside of the rules. I wouldn't be comfortable with that tbh.

I did think it was cruel, until I met with a local lady that does it and talked it over. I told her my concerns, etc. I met her rats that do it, and they dont even mind. They get tons of treats while in the tub and are used to the dogs.
I asked about the barn hunting and the jumping, what I seen what something new called Crazy 8s and Hurdles.
Heres the Nation Rules
Https://www.barnhunt.com/rules/2015_National_Rules.pdfUmmm how you conclude from 1 statement that the club does alot of things outside of the rules? (which isnt true,by the way, its all within the rules)

Those are special events and not true barn hunt. You said your local club trains dogs to alert to just the litter, not the rats, and doesn't use rats at all.
darkvoodoo wrote:I personally could never allow my pets rats to pet used for barn hunt training. Too many rats have had heart attacks, etc. Yes I know the dogs cant actually touch them, but try explain that to a rat.... Why not just use used bedding? (thats what the few clubs I know of use. Ive looked innto it for my dogs, but again not something I would risk my rats with)
darkvoodoo wrote:Im aware how the "sport" works and the rules, but to me, something is only a "sport" if both sides are aware.
Its not safe and not something I would do with my pets rats, but then again if you cant do something as simple as QT, then I doubt you will understand how a big scary dog trying to eat you from outside a tube is scary....
viewtopic.php?f=44&t=1905913&p=84416838&hilit=barn+hunt#p84416838So, maybe, next time someone brings up a sport, don't call them cruel for supporting it. Or were you just making it up about rats having heart attacks and being used unfairly? Make up your mind, but don't go at someone for putting their dog in a sport and rile a mod up about it and then decide that you like the sport just fine and dandy later on when you decide to put one of your own dogs in it.

If any of you are from the UK or can watch UK programmes online then maybe you'll be interested in watching a programme called "Dogs on the dole".
This documents about the work charity dogs trust and dog ownership on the UKs housing estates, where some dogs are a welcome distraction from the daily routine of life on the dole.
It seems rather interesting although I haven't actually seen it yet, I can imagine it is very disturbing so if you don't like documentaries about dogs being fed the wrong food and doing the wrong stuff then this might not be ideal for you.
If you are interested it was played on channel 4 yesterday and you can watch it on 4od.
Sorry to those who can't watch UK programmes online.

So Lyra's reactivity has flared up a lot in the past few days - I didn't think the husky attack would effect her this much. :c
I asked my friend to hold her for a second out on our walk today, a woman came around the corner with her big chocolate labrador (which was minding its own business) and Lyra just went mental - not her usual kind of cowering and snarling thing either, she started growling and lunging, barking her head off. I ran over to her and grabbed the leash and she stopped, so I thought it might have just been because someone else was holding her...nope.
Went for a run afterwards and whenever we went past a dog she'd start barking and lunging (thankfully she didn't stop running, though - rope burn would've been catastrophic) and would only shut up once they were completely out of sight.
On our morning run we met a woman and her little dog who was also very timid, she asked why Lyra was so frightened and I told her she was attacked, apparently her dog was too - twice in one week, possibly by the same dog - she said she didn't let hers off-leash now because he was becoming reactive to other dogs.
