Welcome to Direwood Racers Association

The Fanclub | The Main Thread | Breeding Center | Custom Raffles

Welcome to Direwood Racers. We are an organization that specializes in racing of the Short Maned Echobis. These animals are as larger than horses and are used in our races. They rank in many different colors and we train them to race from the age of one. Echobis are highly aggressive creatures if not trained properly and can be very dangerous towards people if they are wild and have grown without human contact. It was required that all Echobis be registered to keep track of records and aggression. The Echobis are not to be left untrained if owned. This dog like creature is not to be treated like a dog but rather that of a horse, they have a diet of raw meat and are recommended to be fed by hand to strengthen bonds. Echobi pups are the size of regular dogs at birth. They develop their horns if they are males. Direwood’s mission is to improve and spread the excitement of Echobi racing to the community. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Introduction

What is an Echobi you ask? An Echobi is a creature that is the size larger than that of a horse but has canine like features. They can be ridden with proper training and are very obedient if they are trained young. Echobi have mane’s that reach all the way down to their whip like tail. Echobi are equipped with saber teeth that grow to about six inches and protrude out of their mouth regardless of how young they may be. A female Echobi can produce only one pup in a single breeding, but rarely she can have twins. Echobi females can breed up to four times in their lifetime along with males. An Echobi is not fully mature until the age of four, they can live up to a total of twenty years. Echobi pups do not start their training until they are one, this is when they will learn to get use to a head collar and a saddle. Echobi are very social creatures and need to be with others of their kind throughout their lifetime. A male Echobi has six horns on its’ tail that are used for fighting other males during breeding season in the wild.

What This Thread is For

This thread is for not only storing my Echobis, but also for writing out their training levels. Therefore, this thread is more story than storage. Users are free to PM me more about Echobis (though I would advise you to go to ShadyBro instead), however posting on this thread is NOT allowed. Each personal page will state all items I deem necessary to put down.

Personality
Target is a very young, excitable Echobi. She is also very smart, and is able to communicate with her owner on an almost human level. She is a hard worker, and is willing to do almost whatever her owner wants. She is friendly, and is willing to make friends with almost any Echobi. She isn't very picky, and will eat almost anything. However, she has gotten used to a breakfast of boiled chicken, and cooked rack-of-lamb as a treat. Target is usually quiet, and doesn't bark much unless in excitement or distress. She is also very competitive, and in races, can become a bit depressed if not in first place. She is willing to do whatever it takes to win, although she has learned to be discreet about her doings. Target is quiet, and able to sneak up on others without them seeing her, despite her large size. She never gives up, and is not submissive. In fact, she is very dominant, although will awknowledge her owner as "top dog."
Overall, Target is smart, a hard worker, friendly, quiet, competitive, and dominate Echobi.

I walk outside, enjoying the fresh air. I spread my arms out and twirl for a bit, enjoying the feeling of the cool air against my bare arms. I stop twirling, and walk the rest of the way to my stables. Where Target, my only Echobi, sleeps.
"Up up! Get up Target. Now. Or do you want to miss breakfast?"
My "rousing" speech doesn't work too well. Target raises her head and growls, still sleepy. I smile at her, and go to the stable's kitchen, where I start preparing her breakfast. In less than fifteen minutes, the Echobi is at her bowl, eating the boiled chicken prepared. As usual, food spills over the floor, and water from the water bowl splashes over the sides, making me take a little over five minutes to clean up after Target. Five wasted minutes that could have been used for grooming.
Once I'm done cleaning, I take Target's specialized toothbrush and start cleaning her teeth. Immediately, she starts pulling away, whining as I inspect all her teeth, cleaning when I must.
"I know girl, I know," I murmer, trying to calm Target down.
Next, I lead the Echobi to the stable baths, where I scrub her down. Target had played in the mud just the day before, and I had been too tired to give her a proper scrub. I rub her fur as hard as I can, while I feel growls rumbling through her body. Finally, I start on grooming her fur. Target yaps with excitement as I take down the brush from its hook, and begin my weekly ritual of brushing and combing, making sure I get every inch of her body. She makes a little sound like a purr. Yet it isn't. In my three years of owning her, I can never figure out how she does it. When I move to Target's belly, she rolls over onto her belly, paws waving in the air. I brush her gently, and almost half an hour later, I'm done.
"Good girl," I say. "Good girl."

I rise early in the morning as usual, and stay in bed for a bit, listening to bird calls outside my window. I quickly rush downstairs to the kitchen, and make myself a short breakfast: waffles with jam. Once my breakfast is scarfed down, I go outside and walk around to the shed. I take out Target's new head collar, custom made. Like all other head collars. I think. I make my daily walk to the stables, and slip through to the kitchen, where I start on some rack of lamb. Making it, that is. The meat is her favorite food, as far as I can tell, and today, she will deserve it. Once finished, it is already midday. I know that it is time. Time for Target to know her new companion for life.

Target's head collar is a beautiful thing, purple striped with black. It is heavy for me, although I manage to carry it to Target's stall. I wake up the Echobi, and make a big fuss about how "this day is really important" and on and on. After some grumbling and a meal of boiled chicken, Target is awake, and playing outside. She clearly enjoys the fall air, and is frolicking around the grounds when I haul out her head collar. I decide to give her time to get used to it. I set a timer for fifteen minutes, prepared to shove the thing onto her if she refused to accept it.
It wasn't even ten minutes before I head growling and the sound of teeth against metal. "Stop girl! Stop!" I call, hurriedly running towards her. Target was trying to pull the head collar apart; that much was clear. "What's wrong, girl?" I then ask. In a flash, I remember the treat I made for the Echobi, earlier in the day. Maybe it could help.
I warm up a plate of the lamb, and bring it outside, wafting the warm air towards Target's delicate nose. I throw her one piece, which she snaps up. I start on another, smaller one. I hear more growling, and Target shifts into her "pouncing" position. Uh oh. I throw her another piece, and while she is munching, grab the head collar and throw myself at her head. As she stares at me in confusion, I fasten on Target's head collar. She barks and whines, trying to force her head away. But once I'm done, I step back and admire my handiwork. The head collar does look good, purple and black matching with her natural colors. Target looks outstanding. Like a real racer.

The next few hours are a combination of feeding and having Target get used to the feeling of her head collar. By the end of the day, she looks almost...proud. Enjoying it. She shows no discomfort in wearing it. Possibly because she knows she is one step closer in becoming a real racer.

Today was a rare day, as I woke to Target's howl: a call for food. I look at my watch; it's almost ten o'clock. What!? I think. How was I not woken up by my alarm? But it is all irrelevant, as I had a hungry Echobi on my hands. Not the greatest of things to be dealing with.
"Do you have to be so loud?" I grumble to myself as I roll out of bed. I hurry downstairs, dressed haphazardly, and make myself my usual breakfast of waffles smeared with jam. In the stables, I give Target her breakfast of boiled chicken, as always. It had been around a month since she had been introduced to her head collar, and I now thought it a good idea to introduce her to her saddle and saddle blanket. Also customized, in color as well as fit for our bodies. The saddle was purple, a nice contrast against the blanket's solid black. I hoped that she would take to them as easily as she had with the head collar. I was dead wrong.

The instant Target saw the saddle and the blanket, she looked up from her meal and whined, knowing what was coming next. After going through the head collar, I hoped that she would allow me to go for her directly. But I delay the moment by grooming her, making her coat, mane, and tail soft as silk. Once I'm done, I pick up the blanket, and throw it over her body. But the instant the heavy weight is felt, Target shakes it off, and cowers in a corner. I shake my head and pick up the blanket again, and this time, the saddle with it. I gently put both on, and leave to allow her to get acquainted with them. I then leave for the kitchen to make some rack of lamb.
When I come to her stall, I see Target with the saddle in her mouth, trying to rip it, with the blanket under her front paws. Not again, I groan inwardly. I set the meat in front her Target, and my trick works. She leaves both saddle and blanket, allowing me to rip both from her grasp. As she bent down in reach of a tasty morsel, I throw the blanket on her, saddle following. Caught by surprise, the Echobi lifts her head and barks, clearly wondering what I was doing. Once she came to her senses, Target started whining as if asking for mercy. She lay down, body in a gesture of defeat and submission. Her expression clearly read: How could you? I groan, this time outloud, burying my face in my hands. How I wish I had known how stressful the day would be!

It took a while before Target got used to her saddle. She had become grumpy, and snapped at me if I tried to go near her with anything but food. I just couldn't understand her. Afterall, she had taken to her head collar easily, but the saddle was unacceptable. Finally, after about a month, she got over it.

I couldn't put it off any longer. I had to ride her eventually. The day of my decision, I made myself eggs sunny-side up, a deviant from my usual of waffles. I got my riding gear out of my closet. It was slightly dusty, and I hoped that it would still fit me. I tried it on, and it fit, although my right shoulder twangs with pain. I wince. It was an injury I got by Target, the first week of her strike against me.
I run downstairs and to the stables, where I pull out Target's breakfast of boiled chicken. After feeding and brushing her teeth, I let her loose on the grounds, allowing for her excess energy to be spent. Once she runs outside, I put on my gear, and follow her out. I scan for Target, frowning as I look around. She isn't anywhere, and I don't see any trace of her. At least, I don't until she pounces, bowling me over with an enthusiastic pounce.
"Gosh, do you need to be so big?" I grumble as I pick myself up and dust myself off. I was glad though, that the Echobi had finally gotten over her frustration about the saddle, and was hopefully just as excited as me.
I do a running jump, the only way to get onto Target when she is standing, and she barks, shifting her weight as I get settled onto the saddle. She starts moving, and I'm not prepared for riding her. I have ridden horses before, but never an Echobi. I soon fall off, and Target noses me, as if wondering what's wrong. After a few more tries, I finally learn how to get settled and keep my balance on her.
"Giddyup?" I say, hoping for Target to respond. Instead, she turns her head and gives me a look that clearly says: What rubbish are you saying? I laugh at her bemused expression, and dig my heels into her body. She gives a slight jump, but responds, walking towards the stables. I yank at the reigns, and she turns, too slowly foor my liking. So I dig my heels in. Hard. Target takes off, so fast I can barely hold on to her. Finally, I lose my battle and fall off, face first. Target slows down and trots back to me, wondering why I'm not on her back.
"With your speed," I mumble around a mouthful of dirt, "we'll win every race." I push myself up, as Target barks, apparently for joy at my compliment. I think again, at how eerie it is that Target seems to understand me. I stand up, and the Echobi lowers herself, makign it easier for me to climb back up.

Some days and many falls and bruises later, I am now proficient at riding Target at all speeds. She has gained muscle from carrying me, and looks like a perfect and beautiful racer, best of 'em all. As I lie back in my bed, muscles sore from the day's ride, I think of how good the past two weeks have been.

It was the beginning of summer, and I went outside in the sweltering heat with some good news for my Echobi. I had entered Target into her first race. We had been training hard in preperation for the race, and I was excited for all of our time and effort to be payed off. I looked around for Target. She wasn't in her stables, which was typical. She often hid from me, and only came out once I gave up. Or if she wanted to pounce.
    "ROOF!"
I turned around, getting out of Target's way just in time. She had swung at me with her paw, and since she was bigger than a horse--and with muscles, I was never eager to be knocked around. "Hey girl," I said. "Ready for your first race?" The Echobi barked in agreement. I tossed Target her favorite treat--rack of lamb--and did a running jump onto her. She was so big that it was the only way to get up onto her.
"You know the race is tommorow. You'll win, won't you?" I murmered in her ear as she chewed her breakfast. Despite my elation, I was nervous. What if she lost? But I had to put aside those thoughts, and focus on her final training session before her first race. Target had been entered into a "newbie" race, where Echobis that had never raced would get to do so. I had kept Target fairly isolated, only meeting other Echobis when we absolutely had to. Hopefully, Target's belief at being invincible would hold up under the stress of the race.

"Come on Target," I muttered. It was noon, and I swore that it was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Target was a bit sluggish today, not a good sign. It was only our third time running through the course that I had set up. The course included a running track, plenty of twists and turns, small hurdles at evenly spaced intervals, a start, and a finish. We were only halfway through the course a third time, and though I felt Target straining, she wasn't going anywhere quickly.
"Time for a break, girl," I said. I slid off her back, landing with a thump. I inspected my sweet Echobi, whose tongue was lolling out, and whose head was down in an exhausted state. I took her halter and led her back to the stables. If she was in such a state today, then what would she look like tomorrow? I gave Target some water and boiled chicken, and gave her the rest of the day to simply lie around being lazy.

The day of the race was cloudy, with the sun straining to peek through. I was dressed in a black-orange-and-white outfit to match Target's colors. Except she wasn't Target today. Today, she was Bullseye at the Stadium. I had decided on her show name only about two months ago, and the Echobi had taken to it right away. I had named her in hopes that like a bullseye, she would be the best shot, the most perfect one. In the race, she would be the best Echobi, and win 'em all. I took my running jump onto Target, and some of the other jockeyes stared. Well, I couldn't really help being short, could I? I turned Target towards the gates, and she immediatly stiffened, getting ready to bolt. I had trained her reaction times to the point where unless she was distracted, she could "Go!" within a few seconds of the word being said. I noticed that some of the riders didn't seem to have great control of their Echobis. They would move around, some of them barking while their owners struggled to regain control. Other riders were like me, their Echobi trained to the best of their ability. A low growl from Target made me turn my attention back to the race. Thank goodness she had saved me from becoming too distracted!
"Go!" I heard the announced shout. The gates opened, and Target rushed forward, just as we had trained. I held onto the reins, careful not to strangle Target, or Bullseye at the Stadium. Her great paws were stirring up dust from the track, and as we rounded the first bend, I could see some of the riders we had left behind. The ones whose Echobis hadn't been fully in control were doing no better, wanting to play instead of run. Others, with better control, were right behind me and gaining. I urged Target to go faster. She complied, and we sped up, leaving the others behind. At least, we left most of them behind. Next to us were three others. Though fast, I could see that one of the Echobis didn't have much stamina left. He and his rider fell behind. Three of us left. As we rounded another corner, I saw a hurdle that had been placed to slow down or eliminate the unworthy. Target jumped over it with ease. So did another of our opponents. But the third pair hadn't been prepared, and stumbled. Two left. "Target, go!" I screamed. Again she complied, and though we had trained for this, I could see she was tiring. If we didn't finish soon, we would lose. Thankfully, we only had to go around once, and we were done. The other pair was drawing closer to us now, and I could see more details. The Echobi was a male, with wicked-looking spikes. The rider was also a male, and held a whip to spur his Echobi. The threat of the whip seemed to spur on the opponent's Echobi, and I could see we would lose...if we didn't go faster. Leaning forward, I whispered a plan into Target's ear. I never understood how, but we shared a connection to the point of us understanding each other despite being totally different species. My girl understood immediatly, and swerved to the right, trying to go in front of our opponents. They swerved to the left, and we followed, my ability to turn around helping Target understand where to go. After what felt like hours but was probably only a few minutes, the other pair appeared to give up. Target put on some speed, and I could hear the other Echobi's paws pounding the earth faster, in an attempt to catch up. But it was too late, for we had turned another corner, jumped another hurdle, and were sprinting towards the end. Finally, Target turned the final corner, and saw our opponents far behind us. Instead of slowing down though, we sped up, to deter other pairs from beating us.
Clarity returned to in a rush, as Target slowed down and I heard people cheering, chanting: "Bullseye at the Stadium!" We had won.

Third Birthday
The fireworks boom above me, and I hear Target's long, drawn-out howl. I know it is the end of an old year, and a beginning of the new. I recall how much Target has changed from the shy two-year-old to an almost mature three-year-old. I know she is almost ready for racing. Her reflexes have grown, as well as her muscles. Every day, I ride and practice with her. She is the perfect Echobi, I think with a smile on my face. I relax and curl up, thinking about the year to come.

Fourth Birthday
"Hey girl," I murmer to Target. "Happy Birthday." For it is another new year, and Target is now four. How much she has grown! I think to myself, small smile on my face. She has now won a few races, and lost some, yes, but won most. The fireworks change colors above us, and Target gives out a long howl, heard by no one except for us.

Caramel Milkshake is usually a tame and calm Echobi. He has little fire in him, and is prone to relaxing rather than fighting. He is slightly skittish due to his previous owners not taking care of him properly, althoguh is now more relaxed around humans. He is very social, and likes to be with others, whether humans or Echobis. He likes grooming time, and will stretch himself out for maximum pleasure. Though competitive, Caramel Milkshake lacks the determination to win races, causing him to often be in second, third, or fourth place. However, he doesn't give up, and will summon the strength needed to to his task. He is also submissive, and will try and placate other Echobis rather than dominate over them.
Overall, Caramel Milkshake is calm, slightly skittish, social, competitive though lacks determination, not a quitter, and is a submissive Echobi.

I was frustrated with Caramel Milkshake. Supposedly, he had come from a bad home, and was put up for adoptions by officials. And I was the one to adopt him. He was beautiful, I admitted to myself, but skittish and shy. At least Target had the sense to know when not to fight me.
"Caramel," I pleaded, "I'm only trying to groom you!" I was barely one week into owning him, and I had half a mind to put him back up for adoption. But he looked so helpless, that I couldn't help but keep him. "Keep still!" I commanded. The whining stopped instantly. His left foreleg pawed me gently, and I started on his tangled belly-mane. I wondered why he hadn't been taken care of better. But he would have a great home with me. Thankfully, Target was still asleep in the stall next to Caramel's, and I wouldn't have to deal with two Echobis at once.
Once I finish the belly-mane, I move on to his tail-mane and back-mane. Half an hour later, that too, is done. I'm exausted, more so than with Target. Between the whining, struggling, and knots, I don't think I can do any more. But I do. I finish his body fur, and top it off with brushing his teeth. Only then, he doesn't struggle. In fact, he seems to enjoy it. Perhaps he'll get used to living here, I think. I promise to myself that Caramel Milkshake will find a good home and good owner with me. Starting today.
