I would like it if several things were thought about when joining.
1) I know this roleplay has never been specifically realistic, but I don't think a bunch of kids could run a pirate vessel. Older teens or twenties at least, please.
-Tragedy has struck the crew. In a devastating turn of events, their navigator Sonja was brutally murdered in a field near the farmhouse they are staying in. Everyone is gathering at the farm for her burial.

.:The Maiden:.
The Maiden is a huge ship, black as midnight and adorned with large sails. The sails are solid white. The ship has been through storms, and raids, and just about anything you can think of, so it's a mite worn, as you can imagine. She's got three decks, starting with the bilge where cells for prisoners are located. Above that is storage and the crew's cabins, and on the main deck is the captain's quarters near the stern, and a raised deck near the bow where the wheel is located. Underneath that raised deck is the galley. There are two masts, each with a crow's nest at the top.

The more details you add, the less scary the form will look!

Character Name:
Sonja Wende
Gender:
Female
Age:
26
Rank on The Maiden:
Navigator.
Personality:
Sonja was raised under the thumb of a woman who was every inch the Victorian lady, and this means that she was taught to hide her emotions behind a fan and a quiet smile. She did not attend school but was taught how to read, write, and cipher. She is not as good with numbers as she would like but has little use for it in her line of work. She has found that it's all very well to be brainy, but what you really need to be is clever. If you are swift of body and mind there is no opponent you cannot defeat, and Sonja has taken this wisdom dearly to heart. She learned swordplay at an early age and, since joining the crew of the Maiden, has earned a fierce reputation and a name to go with it. The Sabre, one of the most feared swordfighters on the seven seas and then some. She's good, yes, but more often than not it's her cunning that wins the fight. She doesn't drink alcohol because she hates having fog inside her brain. When she isn't plundering, raiding, or marauding, Sonja can actually be a very jovial person. She smiles more often than she frowns and never raises her voice if she doesn't have to. She's a wonderful dancer but couldn't hold a tune if it had handles, so she leaves the music to someone else. She also seems to have an extraordinary sense of direction; give her a compass and a map and she'll get you anywhere you like. She knows the night sky like nobody's business and can navigate by the stars easier than most.
Description [detailed] or picture:
Sonja is tall, claiming five feet and eight inches to her height. She's thin and agile, almost like a willow withe. She's almost freakishly bendy but doesn't showcase this as a talent because she's afraid of breaking. Her toes and fingers are long, good for climbing. She has small ears, a pointed chin, and high cheekbones. Her eyes are round and deep, deep brown, skin tanned from years in the sun. Her hair is a deep gold, also from the sun. She normally pulls it back in a braid or ponytail, tying it off with a length of colorful cloth. Sometimes she covers her head with a red handkerchief. In her hair she has hung a multitude of beads and ribbons, each one representing something significant about her life. She prefers to wear men's clothing because it gives her more freedom to move. Her shirts are white to deflect heat, two sizes too large, long-sleeved but with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows. Her breeches are dark brown, her knee-high boots black leather and well-worn. Around her slender waist she wears a dark brown sword belt, fastened with a round brass buckle. She's left-handed, so her saber hangs on her right hip; on her left she carries a pistol for emergencies. Over it all is a long brown coat with faded stitching at the hems; it was her father's and she treasures it. Around her neck hangs a cross necklace that belonged to her mother, and it has sentimental value even though she isn't particularly religious.
History:
Sonja Wende has always favored an adventurous life. When she was younger she was a rebel without a cause, unable to go to school or take an apprenticeship because she was of the weaker sex. She took up archery but was never any good at it; eventually her father suggested that she try fencing. Her mother did not approve of this, but it gave her an outlet for a lot of previously misplaced anger. After a few years Sonja was able to take on boys two, even three years older than herself, and there seemed like nothing she couldn't do. Then, of course, everything fell to pieces. Her father was killed in an accident at the shipyard where he worked, and her mother was hauled off to debtor's prison when she could no longer pay the bills. Sonja moved in with her aunt and uncle, who were stricter about a woman's place in the world. Her aunt forbade her from practicing swordplay and instead tried to teach her the gentler arts of sewing and dancing. She also attempted to teach Sonja how to sing, but the girl had a voice that would frighten starlings and so she soon gave up the endeavor. It was the dancing that Sonja excelled at. She was already lithe from years of training with a sword, but her aunt's strict dance lessons taught her agility and grace. She learned to maneuver lightly on her feet, to twirl and glide with ease. The sewing did not come naturally to her, but she kept at it because she could not give up when she had only begun to learn. She lived with her aunt and uncle until she was twenty years old; when her cousin Marcus was born, she moved out and found a nice little apartment that overlooked the sea. For three years she held a steady job at the local tailoring shop, fixing this and hemming that. One day, a very strange customer came in with a very strange order. He requested several lengths of sailcloth, and Sonja was to show him to the market where he could buy it. This done, the man tipped her in silver to carry the sailcloth back to the harbor. It was quite late when she finished the job, and the streets of London were dark and quiet. In these cases you would expect me to say that she was jumped, or raped, or threatened, but that didn't happen. Sonja made it home quite safely, but the scent of the sea and the creaking of the ship's wooden deck had instilled in her a longing. She was itching to travel; it had been this way all her life, but she had never before realized it. The next ship that came to port was called the Maiden, captained by a thickly-built woman with dark blue hair. She called herself Indigo and that's Captain Indigo to you, girl. It was the start of what would be the greatest journey of her life. She would never make it home again, in fact.
