A week later, Shae finally decided to quit training and give the kids a break. Its a good thing, reflected Cole, rubbing his wrists. His whole body burned with exhaustion, and his muscles felt like they would turn to jelly at any second.
How do they do it? He wondered, watching as the rest of the group ran around, glad to be free of training. Orion jumped in the air and back flipped only to land expertly on her feet. Cole winced, imagining what would happen if he tried that in his current state.
Groaning, he flipped onto the ground and rubbed the back of his neck. They'd gone outside to hang out by the cliffs that bordered the tossing blue waters.
"You get used to it."
Cole whirled around in shock to see Mia standing behind him. She'd come up behind him silently and now stood there, blonde locks cascading over her shoulders.
"You scared me!" Snapped Cole.
"Sorry." Her voice indicated she wasn't. "As I was saying, you get used to the strain. If you think this bad, wait till your first time battling a villain."
Orion came over and stood over Cole. "He'll get killed for sure," she decided.
"Thanks for the encouragement, I feel a lot better," snapped Cole, brushing back a strand of black hair that hung in his eyes. She laughed.
"Hey Cole, wanna swim?" Asked Shane from his spot on the edge of the cliff. He shook his head. Orion grabbed his wrist and hauled him to his feet.
"I'm good..." Laughed Cole nervously. He changed the subject. "So what are your powers?"
Shane grinned. "Super speed!" He yelled in a Tarzan voice. With an over dramatic look on his face, he thumped his chest and jumped off the cliff, settling in for a belly flop. Except he didn't. A second before he hit the water, Shane righted himself so he was falling feet first and started running on top of the water. Cole blinked.
What the...? Shane was running so fast he was almost a blur. He streaked back up the narrow trail to the top of the cliff, then stopped. Well, not exactly stopped. Smoke rose in the air, hiding him from view and he skidded a complete circle around Cole.
He blinked away the smoke burning his eyes. "Wow..." He said, unsure if what else to say.
"My turn!" Called Mia. Before giving anyone a chance to answer, she closed her eyes. Then she sort of just... Melted into a different creature. She flapped large, golden wings and looked at them. A griffin. Cole raised his eyebrows.
"Cool. So can you really fly?" He asked doubtfully. Mia raised a delicate eyebrow.
"Don't dare me, or I'll fly you out of here so fast you'll leave your stomach on the ground."
Cole rolled his eyes. "I'd like to see you try." Just for safety though, he scooted backward. He had to say the most unique power was Alex's. Who has ever heard of water barbed-wire? Orion came over and flipped down beside him. Shane brushed some excess dust off his pants.
"All right, I'm heading out to get our pizza. You two love bugs can stay here."
Orion got up and shoved him, sending the brown-haired boy falling to the ground.
"Ow! You didn't have to do that?"
Orion smirked. "Want me to do it again? I can push you into the water this time."
Shane [censored] her an amused glare and pressed a small red button on his left wrist. Sleek, synthetic wings unfolded. Cole was doubtfully.
"You can't fly with those. I've gone to school, dude."
Shane shook his head. "Oh, Cole, some day you'll realize not everything is based on science." Alex followed suit, then pressed an even smaller black button beside the red one. Jets of flame burst out of the wings. He gave Cole a small salute and jumped off the cliff, spreading his arms parallel to his wings. Shane and Mia followed, and, to Cole's surprise, they didn't drop into the water like stones. They actual flew, streamlined bodies skimming the water.
"Wow."
"Wow what?" Asked Orion.
"All this is really something," admitted Cole, bright blue eyes scanning the horizon.
"Yeah." Orion reached down and hauled him to his feet. "Let's train some more."
Cole regarded the semi-violent girl with distrust. "I'm really going to regret this, aren't I?"
