THE PRICE OF MY FREEDOM
◤................................................................................................................................................◥I paid a heavy price for my freedom, a very heavy price indeed. It cost me the only friend and ally that I had in the labs. I was born on Quartan3 and my family was sent away in a space craft when I was still young by the blue invaders. When we had landed, I was separated from my family within the lab that was constructed to contain us. My friend, a Yiddish scientist who worked at the lab I was in, named me. He called me Teivel, which means devil, because I fought like one whenever the scientists took me out of my cage to examine and test me and more so when they separated me from my family . He took pity on me for he saw that the things which were being done to me were beyond necessary and were, to his thinking, beyond cruel.
Often, he would speak to me, at first it was about how much he missed his homeland, which I could sympathize with as I too missed my home as well, though I couldn't speak words of comfort to him. Over time, his chats turned to scheming, though he always careful to make sure that no one was around to hear him speak to me in a kind way, a friendly way. When we were alone together, he would run his ideas by me and I would nod or shake my head to tell him whether I thought an aspect of his plan was good or not.
On one day, the day before that fateful day when my escape was made, he told me his final plan to aid me in finally escaping the clutches of the other laboratory scientists.
"Alright, so here's the plan little Teivel," he began, his molten brown eyes gleamed excitedly even as they flitted about warily, "I managed to get on lock-up duty for tomorrow, so when I go to give you all food and water, I'm going to keep your cages all unlocked so you can get out of them, I'll also leave the door open for you, from there you can get out on your own since they made the doors automatic."
It seemed like a beautiful and well-thought out plan at the time, so we went with it.
The next day, he did just as he said and everything was going just as planned, when another scientist came back to the lab and ruined everything.
"Halt," he had shouted, racing towards us all, as if expecting us to obey him.
"Run," my friend had shouted, fighting off the other scientist who was going to shut down the automatic doors and put the whole lab on lock-down.
I faltered, torn between running away as my friend had bidden me to do, or fight off the scientist to ensure that my friend would be safe and my kin could get away.
Seeing my hesitation, my friend begged me to run, so I did. I ran as fast as could, stopping at a hilltop to look back at the lab. Sorrowfully, I watched as my friend was hauled away by the scientist. My heart ached and I longed to come to my friend's rescue, for I knew that whatever fate lay in store for him now, it would not be pleasant. He had risked his life to free us, should I not do the same for him?
At the same time though, I knew that he would not approve, he would want me to fly. To run as fast as I could and as far away as possible.
I still consider my flight from the laboratory the biggest mistake of my life, my biggest failing. For I failed my friend. He didn't die, but he might as well have been killed. One day, by chance, I met up with him again, but he had changed. He was a completely different person, he tried to capture me and bring me back to the lab. They must have tortured him for who knows how long and brain-washed him.
I am what he called me.
I am a devil.
For only a devil could be so heartless as to leave behind a friend to suffer such a fate.
I am a devil.
