East of the Sun- Special Birthday Adopt

Postby SerenWish » Sat May 30, 2015 4:35 pm

Hey CWHR! I am so sorry for being away for so long, I have missed all of you terribly~ I'd like to make it up to you with hopefully higher levels of activity from yours truly, starting with a series of adopts that were supposed to come out on my birthday (thank you to all who wished me well! Also those silly wonderful boogers who gave me gifts!). Because they are special, I am going to space them out over the course of the next month, to make it last, and to not overload you all. (I did get permission to include the companions.)

Each of these four horses are based on a book in the quartet of books I'm writing, based on the fairytale "East of the Sun, West of the Moon". Please note that while I am offering these guys up, I claim no ownership of the fairytale, but the specifics of the storyline and characters are my own, especially my depictions of the four winds. Please do not claim the characters, my specific titles, or my writing pieces as your own. I am, however, always happy to discuss books, so send me a PM if you're interested in chatting!

This stallion is based on the first book, "East of the Sun". In the first book of the series, a young girl is pushed into a quest due to a mistake she has made, and her first journey to the east is made on the back of the East Wind, who takes the form of a bull. Hence his little calf friend, as well as his Andalusian bull herder inspired tack!

In order to win him, fill out the form below, and enjoy a first-draft excerpt of the book! (This is not a final version, it's a working "placeholder" version.)

Never had she been so terrified.
She felt as though she was astride an earthquake. The East Wind did not glide along, he thundered and roared. He pitched and tossed, joyful in the hot, beating sun. The mixture of scorching sunlight and scouring wind felt as though it would flay her skin. She found herself breathlessly hoping it would end soon. Landscapes of amber and orange passed beneath them, as they dipped through valleys and rose over hilltops, dry trees rattling behind them.
Her wish was granted, as East halted as abruptly as he took off, pitching her into a cloud of red dust and rough rock desert. She groaned, covered in scarlet earth. Wind whipped some of the dust off her and the deep rumble of East's laughter vibrated like a late spring storm. "We have arrived., little seed."

      artistic piece:

Ildefonso watched from his stall in slight curiosity as he watched the grooms rushed in and out of the stable, bringing all the horses that were out in the pastures into their stalls. He noticed there was an air of desperation to it, and the horses seemed to be perfectly willing to go with them. Even trotting ahead of them nervously, almost like they were running away from some slow predator. Fon snorted. What could be so urgent that caused everyone to act this way?

He turned to pay a bit of attention to his salt lick, but a glance out of his stall window told him all he needed to know.

The clouds were black. Blacker than he'd ever seen them. He knew his first winter in America might be harsh, but this looked completely ridiculous. He shivered, already feeling the cold settling into his bones. He didn't know what kind of weather those clouds would bring, but he knew it would make him regret ever having left Spain. He caught the tail end of a conversation between two handlers, and the foreign word 'blizzard' popped up. Fon had no idea what it meant, but it already sounded like he wasn't going to like it.

Roughly an hour later, the grooms had gotten the last of the horses into the stables. Just as soon as the stable doors had shut and the horses were left on their own, the clouds broke open, and Fon watched in wonder as little white specks dropped down slowly from the sky and settled on the ground.

Fon flicked an ear. This is what the grooms had rushed to put all the horses back in the stable for? He couldn't comprehend it. This looked harmless. Rather cold, but otherwise completely harmless. He snorted once again, now completely disinterested in the weather outside. His stall was warm and comfortable, what was he doing staring out a cold window for?

Ildefonso sighed, settling down into the thick layer of straw on the floor of his stall. He hung his head and shut his eyes, slipping into a deep sleep.

He was awoken later by the sound of all the horses in the stable becoming quite restless. With a groan the stallion stood up and looked around the stable. Some of the horses were nervously pacing in their stalls, others were whinnying, and others stood dead still with their ears perked forwards. Something had gotten their attention. The grulla mare in the stall next to him, Kidd, even started hitting her stall door with her hoof.

And then, he heard it. A distress call from an animal somewhere out in the distance. A young animal. He couldn't quite tell what kind, but the poor thing needed help. And fast.

Fon joined in on the chorus, knowing that the handlers would eventually come out to see what was wrong.

A few minutes later, they were joined by a few grooms, and one of the overseers, Peter Harvey. Peter marched right on over to Kidd's stall to try and get the mare to calm down, and the group spread out across the stable to try and do the same. Kidd merely stepped back and whinnied. No matter what they did, the horses would not stop. It was at that moment that the radio on Peter's belt crackled to life, and the voice of his wife, Angela, was heard.

"Peter we're hearing the sound of what seems to be a calf somewhere down the cattle drive trail. Do you think you and a few others can go out and check?" She spoke.

Peter picked up his radio and replied. "That doesn't make any sense, we don't even have a bull here. How could it be a calf?"

"It could have gotten separated from the others and wandered onto the property from another ranch. I wouldn't like a calf freezing to death out there if it's preventable. At least just go down the trail a bit. If you feel like you're getting too far from the ranch just turn back." Angela stated.

"Alright. Maybe that's what has the horses freaking out over here. I'll go and see." Peter agreed.

Fon began pawing at his stall door, and whinnying to get Peter's attention. He reached his head over the door and began biting at the lock. Peter glanced over at him, raising an eyebrow. "You want to go Fon?" Peter questioned. He reached over and unlatched the door, and Fon went racing out, heading straight over to the back door of the stable. He was soon joined by Kidd, Nour, and even the mule Bombproof.

"Hey!" Peter called out, and the 4 equines turned around to face him. Peter couldn't help but chuckle at their eagerness. "You guys still need to get tacked up!"

After the tack was put on and the riders mounted, the 4 equines raced out of the stable and down the cattle drive trail, Peter's shepherd mix Citali right alongside them. Fon snorted angrily at the weather. The few white specks that had been falling from the sky just a few hours ago had turned into a blinding white screen. The Mediterranean weather of Spain had not prepared him for weather like this, and he found himself shivering as he raced on.

After they'd gone down the trail a ways, the riders slowed them to a stop glancing around the brush and trees on the sides of the trail, keeping an eye out for any movement. Fon jumped when Bombproof let out a loud honk that was stuck somewhere between a horse, a donkey, and a goose. (In Fon's opinion.) The call echoed through the valley that the ranch was situated in.

Reaction 2: This is what the description of the surroundings reminded me of! Good old Utah!
Artistic Piece: Poem-
Calm eyes looked into those of rage,
The horse studied the bulls movements,
The bull snorted with agitation,
The human atop the horses back shouted at the bull,
The bull ignored the humans threats to shoot it,
The horse thrashed his head and whinnied,
He knew the bull was innocent and didn't deserve to die,
Another warning whinny escaped the horses mouth,
He reared in attempt to distract the human,
The bull realized that this horse was never the enemy he thought,
He bellowed a thanks before spinning on his heels,
Dust lifted from the dry ground and the bull ran,
The man spurred and whipped the horse after the bull,
The horse refused and simply stood watching his new found friend run for safety,
They would meet again,
The horse knew this,
And when they did,
They would be free

Name's Maya, but I go by a range of other names. So call me
what you like! I am utterly obsessed with Dragon Age with my main
romances being Alistair, Anders, and Cullen. I am also very
interested in horses and go riding every week for lessons.
I care for and show rabbits in 4H. My lil' bun is a Jersey Wooly
buck named Alistair after the one and only Ferelden king.
Drawing and reading are some of my favorite past times
along with roleplaying. I roleplay on both Feral Front and
Tumblr. Don't be afraid to start a conversation with me!
I don't bite and I'm always accepting of a new friend~
