Edit: I had an idea
The group becomes infamous around the world because of a certian mad-woman (or maybe all of them in general, since they're just starting out with new powers, things are going to get chaotic ) - and everyone believing that they're on her side - when the groups get split up one or two of those groups get captured, making It easier for Death to get them, so the last one or two remaining groups have to save their butts-

i assumed merci was human, tbh c: but any species is cool, if you wanna give him something outside of human.
