Joey's paws sank into the warm, wet sand of the beach. The sun was shining and the water lapped at his feet. His day should have been perfect. But it wasn't.
A few weeks before then Joey and his best friend had been walking along the beach. It was warm and the sun was shining brightly. They had been talking and laughing and smiling and life was perfect, as life should be. Then they noticed a dark shape gliding through the water. Joey's friend stepped into the water to get a closer look.
“I wonder what it is.” his friend said. Although his friend was younger and Joey they had always been very close.
“It's a sea turtle.” Joey said, walking over with a smile on his face. “They're absolutely beautiful creatures.” Joey's friend grinned.
“I want to see it!” he yelled. He leaped into the water and started to swim down to get a closer look. Joey stepped forward, horrified.
“No!” He yelled. He knew that his friend couldn't swim. He took a deep breath and leaped into the water after him. He saw his friend gasping for breathe, swallowing gallons of water. Joey swam underneath his friend and started to swim upwards. But by the time they had reached the surface his friend had gone limp. He pushed him onto the beach. He was too late.
As he walked along the beach, remembering the incident he noticed a dark shape swimming away from the shore. He clenched his teeth. “I hate sea turtles.” he muttered. He turned towards the turtle. “YOU HEAR THAT?! I HATE SEA TURTLES!” he yelled to it, not caring if anyone heard him. He turned away and was about to go home when he noticed something small lying on the beach. It was a baby turtle. It just... lay there. At first Joey refused to think about it and walked past it, but after walking a few more steps he stopped. He turned around. It was hurt. He noticed that one of it's flippers was bent at an awkward angle. He walked back over to it and looked at it carefully. “You killed my friend.” he whispered to it with hate in his voice. It made a small squeaking noise. Then he noticed something that made him change his mind about it completely. The sea turtle's eyes were the exact same colour as his friend's eyes. He stood there for a moment and then sighed. He carefully picked it up in his mouth and carried it to the nearest aquarium, the only place he could think of to take it. He ran in and placed it on the ground. “You have to help it, it's hurt.” he said, his eyes darting about, filled with worry.
A marine biologist who had been talking to a visitor heard him and walked over. “You're certainly right, it is.” the biologist said to Joey. “Follow me.” The biologist picked the baby turtle up in his mouth and walked through a set of two doors. They walked through several corridors and rooms until they came to one full of bottles and medical supplies. He placed it onto a table. He was about to reach for something when Joey started to blurt out a list of instruction on how to take care of it. The biologist just stared. “Well, you're right.” he said with surprise. Joey put his head down.
“Sorry.” he murmured.
“Sorry about what? You're completely right, that is what I should do.”
Joey put his head back up and for the first time in weeks the corners of his mouth turned up slightly. “Really?” he asked. The biologist nodded.
“You know, you seem to know your stuff.” he said. “How would you like to work as my assistant?” The slight smile that had been on Joey's face became a huge grin.
Several months later Joey had become in charge of taking care of the sick and injured animals at the aquarium. His favourite animal in the whole aquarium was the sea turtle that he had helped to rescue. Once it had healed they had tried to release it, but it just stayed there and stared at Joey. They decided that it would stay at the aquarium. Whenever Joey walked past the tank that the turtle stayed in it would swim along side him. Joey was the only one who the sea turtle would ever let take care of it. Joey smiled as he watched it swim slowly through the tank. He smiled. The sea turtle swam over. It also seemed to smile. The warm heating was on in the building and the bright lights above the tank were on. So they smiled together as they watched the sea turtles in the water.
