Roberts, the famed 'destroyer escort that fought like a battleship', also known as 'The Battleship' in the military culture. His WWII service days were not a time he enjoyed, and it reflects in his personality. Samuel can be quite grumpy at times, but underneath that facade lies a pure-hearted soldier who will die for his country. Losing comrades in the war has made him bitter over the years, and he still has flashbacks to seeing comrades sinking, dying, and even dead. These memories have forced him to consider drinking to drown them out, but he doesn't because of what his batch brother said to him. The temptation has been there more than once though. Samuel is also insecure about his size, and has a short temper to boot. One should never call him shrimp or midget, as these will set off his temper, and if one is a larger ship, they will learn why he is known as 'The Battleship'.
Bio: Samuel is more than just a tour boat for Whiteland Tours in Miami. He is really a WWII hero, Samuel B. Roberts, AKA 'The Battleship'. Born in a factory during WWII, Samuel B. Roberts was born in a batch of two, his batch brother being Perry J. Roberts. Almost immediately, the brothers were drafted into service, and that is where the saga of Samuel began. Samuel was deployed almost a year after his brother, and assigned to Taffy 3 in the Pacific. While there, several of the larger ships would tease him about his small size, and he would get pissed off more than once. Samuel was very insecure about being one of the smallest ships in Taffy 3, so he often tried to make himself the life of the party to gain more respect. Alas, it didn't work the way he had hoped. Samuel struggled to gain acceptance by the rest of Taffy 3, but when 1944 came around, Samuel received crushing news. His batch brother Perry had died in battle against the Japanese fleet. Samuel was about ready to give up and take his own life when he received a last letter from Perry. It told Samuel to make him proud, and Samuel was able to rebound and regain himself. Several times, he came close to giving up, but he would use his brother's words to keep going, and when the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the battle off Samar, began, Samuel would do more than that. Pushed to his limits when Taffy 3 fell under attack by heavy Japanese ships, Samuel B. Roberts took on several ships before he settled on the Chokai as his opponent. In the ensuing battle, Samuel wound up sinking Chokai, but not before sustaining severe damages himself. Samuel fought so hard, he ended up with the nickname 'The Battleship' because he had fought like one. Nearly sunk himself, Samuel made his way back to the nearest base, which happened to be a port at the island of Samar. He lived, and became a national war hero for his efforts during the battle. After the war, Samuel went into civilian life and got a job as a tour boat in Miami. All traces of his war heritage were removed, and only the first part of his name was left uncovered by paint. Now, with his country calling him to service once more, this WWII hero will see action once again.
Weaknesses: Samuel is a small ship. That's all there is to it. He has only a few armaments and thin armor plating. As ironic as it is, a ship of his size shouldn't be able to handle opponents of larger sizes. Samuel cannot take very powerful shells, and his small size makes him an ideal target to aim at. However, when compounded with his battle scars, Samuel can't take very much damage before he has to retreat. He also hates to be called midget or even shrimp. If he gets called that, Samuel will lose his temper and thus not make rational decisions. This can get him into trouble, and with his remaining damages he still has, it can get very sticky to the point he needs to be rescued.
Strengths: Samuel is very good at tactics and will use tactics that are otherwise unconventional, as he did during the Battle of Leyte Gulf when he used star shells, or illumination shells, as ammo. He is also fast for a ship of his size. Rated for 22-24 knots originally, Samuel can actually go at 28.7 knots. He first reached this speed during the battle where he got his nickname, and has been able to go at that speed ever since. It doesn't come without a price though. As Samuel's engine safeties were disengaged, he has not been able to get them re-engaged after that, as his safeties were not able to be reproduced. This means if he goes at full speed, he risks burning out his engines. Samuel can only go at 20 knots as a result of self-limitation, meaning he doesn't go at full speed by his own free will. His small size is also an advantage, as most shells will pass over him or around him. Samuel is also very stubborn like a battleship, and will do whatever it takes to defeat his enemies.
Other: A very successful war movie called
'The Little Battleship' was made around Samuel's war experiences. To date, no other war movie has won three Oscars or even been at the top movie rating for more than 24 weeks at a time.
