╚══════════╝ Brackenstep awoke with a yawn, revealing a curling salmon tongue and Ivory teeth before she closed her mouth and shook her head. She sleepily blinked open her green orbs, looking around at the other sleeping forms around her, everyone still seemed to be asleep. She was tempted to just lay her head back down in the softness of her mossy nest but instead knew she had to get up. She pushed herself to her paws with a groan and shook out her thick tabby and white pelt, a few pieces that had clung to her falling off waiting to reattach themselves once she returned later. She was sore all over, her body ached and her mind was groggy, she could barely remember everything that had happened over the past few days. All she could remember was running, the constant running and hiding from twolegs as they looked for a new place to call home. But she also remembered the cats that had attacked them as they traveled through their territory, in fact she still had a few scratch marks along her shoulder that were still healing. Although her thick fur had begun to grow back over them, she could still feel them when she moved. Her stomach growled as she stood there in her makeshift nest, and with a sigh she carefully she made her way across the den, careful to avoid any tails and paws and soon made it to the entrance and pushed herself out and into the weak morning light.
Stepping out she blinked sleepily a few times, her green orbs scanning the clearing to see if any of her clanmates had awoken yet. A cool breeze greeted her and for once she was thankful for her thick pelt, though she envied her clanmates with a shorter one in the leaf full. Her gaze settled upon Tigerstar, the tabby was sitting beside the freshkill pile just seemingly staring at it while waving his tail. She sighed, "He must be thinking of Lilystar" she thought and felt a pang of sadness course through her as she remembered the previous leader. She had fought hard to lead her clan here, bringing them to their new home and hoping to find peace only to succumb to sickness and wounds. She missed her dearly and could only imagine how Tigertstar was fairing as well as the rest of the clan. Seeing no one else around she walked over towards the him, her hunger driving her forward as well as her wanting to attempt and comfort him. A sad and heavy hearted leader was not always someone they could look up too, right now they needed someone strong and level to help them rebuild and she knew he had it in him. Walking across the clearing reminded her paws of all the walking they had already done, her paws feeling a bit sore but she ignored it as she approached.
"Good morning Tigerstar, awake bright and early as usual" she said with a small grin spreading across her maw as she spoke, trying to appear cheerful despite their condition and circumstances. Glancing towards the freshkill pile she saw it was slim pickings, though she knew why. They had once lived near a river, used to fishing and relying upon the water source they weren't the best of land hunters. In fact her pallet still wasn't completely used to the fur and wilderness taste of the animals they hunter here, she missed the scales and fresh water taste that fish brought. Plus the animals they had come to find in the forest were much more difficult to catch, the could hear and feel their footprints before they could even get close and could quickly dash for cover before they could leap in for their quarry. She spotted a small mouse, it was skinny but not quite scrawny, picking it up and set it before his paws. "You should eat, we can catch more" she said encouragingly, noting his thin frame though he was always thin, but with the approaching leaf bare they would all need to put on a little weight, if they could anyway.
