i don't really ever enter contests that require tryout art since i don't want to buy art for a character that im not 100% sure im going to get? i'd rather spend it on the one's i already have or make it myself. i always found the concept of tryout art a bit silly.

it makes more sense for the judging to be focused more on what actually in the forms then how pretty they are but that's just my opinion tbh

I agree with this.
If you are trying out for a free character, it should be more about the users connection/character development. Otherwise, a lot of users will spent a lot of time and money/points for art of a character that they wont get.

I think of it this way:
I am practically buying the character by spending money/points on this art, but not actually owning it in any way, shape, or form if i don't win.

Now,
MAKING your own tryout art, or contests that strictly say that you have to make the art is a different story. And i feel that those types should still be more based on development/connection more than art quality/quantity. Not all of us are Picasso >.>

I don't usually buy tryout art myself. I mean sure if it's like say a "Impress me competition I go all out but when you get tryout art you're always taking a chance that you'll lose. It's like that with any competition for a free adopt, there's always a chance even when you try your hardest.

So usually I just don't enter cause it's more stressful than anything else ;v;"
When I judge it's more about how much effort is in the form as a whole. How much the character actually stands out to me and like I can relate to. A story that pulls me in with a unique idea but also something where I don't get bored.

Of course art counts too when it's allowed, but I still look mostly at content without art. If you do effort and make a lot of art I take that into consideration too since you went out of your way to do it yourself rather than have someone do it for you uwu
