A soft breath seethed through her lips, her eyes wavering when he gave her that blank look, as though he was squirming inside. She clenched her jaw, staring straight back at him helplessly. Her sweaty palms drew slowly into her pockets, her fingers for something metallic, small and cool to the touch. "No, please don't," she blurted out, quickly rushing to his sides. "...I'm so sorry, Ember. I'm not who you think I am, I never was...I'm one...one of them. I was a late shifter, only figured out that I could become a wolf when I hit the edge of nineteen," she whispered hoarsely, opening up her sweaty palms to reveal the ring she had been keeping to herself for years now, gently slipping it into his hands with bleak eyes. "...I really did think you were dead, I really did. I'm so, so sorry," she was practically choking now, on the brink of tears, her head throbbing. "I don't want to talk about this later, okay? I can't handle it, I can't handle any of it."
