The purpose of this lab is to find the percent of water in a hydrate. The general method of this lab is using a Bunsen burner to get remove water from a hydrate. One concept is percent composition. Percent composition is the percentage of a compound that makes up an element. This related to the lab because you are trying to find the percent of water. Another concept is using mass to find the difference . This is using the mass before and after to find the amount of change in a substance.
Procedure:
1-Set up the ring stand wire, and gauze
2-Heat the evaporating dish for three minutes
3- Carefully use the tongs to remove it
4- Let cool for five minutes
5- Measure two grams of hydrate
6- Record exact mass of dish and hydrate
7- Heat dish and hydrate
8- Heat until all the blue is gone
9- The teacher will use a scooper to break it up
10- Let cool for a minute
11- Find mass immediately after
