About Dhoruba

Dhoruba Kennel is located in Kenia. You can find us to the north of Mombasa but we're still far outside.

In past it was an old safari lodge but now it's completely restored and renovated. It's no big lodge but we always find a place for some guests to stay. You can reach us by car or - the more comfortable way - by plane. There is a small bush airstrip near our lodge.


Dhoruba - Storm
Dhoruba is Swahili and means storm. Our Kennel got this name briefly after the land was bought. We wanted to visit the land but were surprised by a sudden thunder storm. Instead of beeing annoyed we decided to be pleased about the rain, especially as we somehow like such weather. While we laughed and started to dance a bit in the rain our Massai guide came to the idea to call our lodge the 'storm lodge'. Dhoruba was born.

About Kira:
Height: 24 inches (approx 60 cm)
Weight: 112 pounds (approx 50,8 kg)

Kira is a clever girl. She understands many commandos and even knows some tricks but if you want her to do something it's often like flipping a coin. If she decides to please you, you're lucky. Some more obedience training is really necessary. She is a bit headstrong and independent. Sometimes it seems she is more a big cat than a dog.
Kira often behaves dominant and doesn't fear any conflicts.
She is small and strong but due to a weak back leg not the fastest Mkali.

Disciplines: Primary obedience and hunting.
All in all Kira is a healthy and versatile dog. But her right back leg is a bit weak. After long runs or other hard sporty loads (or hunts) it hurts a bit. She tends to limp, then. Therefore we focus on obedience competitions and only participate in sporty events from time to time, depending on her fitness on the day. That headstrong girl just needs some more obedience training.
When participating in a hunting competition she often compensates her lack of speed with her cleverness.

About Glimmer:
Height: 26 inches (approx 66 cm)
Weight: 120 pounds (approx 54 kg)

Glimmer is a happy and very agile dog. Although she can she doesn't like to sit still for a longer time. She loves to play and to run. It's easy to teach her tricks and most of the time she is really willing to work. But she gets a bit grumpy when she's bored.
She loves her mate Rumble deeply, although she banters him sometimes.

Disciplines: Primary agility.
Glimmer is a quick runner and loves all kinds of obstacles. Although she would be good at other disciplines, too, it seems agility is most fun for her.

About Rumble:
Height: 30 inches (approx 76 cm)
Weight: 140 pounds (approx 63,5 kg)

Rumble is a very proud and self-reliant dog. He loves it to show off. Competitions are cool for him as long as he doesn't lose. Rumble is a sore loser. He might not be the most clever Mkali but he has his heart in the right place.
Rumble loves his mate Glimmer and he would do everything to please her. He is a loyal and wholehearted companion.

Disciplines: Primary hunting.
Rumble is strong and has a good stamina. Combined with a good speed he is a good hunting partner.

About Atreus:
(Projected) Height: 29 inches (approx 73 cm)
(Projected) Weight: 136 pounds (approx 61,7 kg)

Although he is still a puppy, Atreus already shows himself off as a proud and self confident dog. He is not excessive curious and feels more comfortable with familiar situations. Nevertheless he is not anxious, he just dislikes foreign situations. He is a brave boy and sometimes he can be a bit protective.
But Arteus is not always that bright knight. In fact he has a little quirk: He doesn't care about others property. At least for the first time he takes what he wants. As you can imagine it's hard for him to learn that other Mkalis properties have to be respected, especially food, treats or favourite toys. You sometimes hear this little puppy yowling, when other Mkali teach him that he doesn't own everything. But no worries, that are just lessons without any alarming fights.

Disciplines: None, yet.
He is still too young for competitions. But in future he might be great in hunting or obedience competitions.
