Madeline stop to examine the bark of a birch tree. She loved to play small games with herself, identifying insects and observing them. She'd allow harmless insects, such as beetles, crawl onto her hand. Anything else, she just watched, transfixed by transparent wings or countless legs. But that wasn't why she stopped at this tree.
As she pulled closer, the bark of the tree seemed to move. She continued watching, absolutely fascinated. She wondered if perhaps she'd discovered some new breed of grub, when the bark stilled. Words, she realized. Before her, carved into the tree, seemingly of its own accord nonetheless, were words that made her head spin.
"if you are reading this, you've been in a coma for ten years. now, we're trying a new technique. we don't know where this message will end up in your dream, but we're hoping to get through. please wake up! we miss you."
Madeline could not comprehend. What did this mean? What did it mean?! How could she be in a coma? She'd just left her home... which was where again? Gasping, she looked up to the clear blue sky, and try as she might, couldn't remember anything much. No details about her family or school. Several blurred faces here and there. But that was all. Terrified, she felt herself losing consciousness. Or maybe gaining it.
She bolt up, her back rim rod straight. Her green eyes shot about, searching hopefully. She was surrounded by tall grasses and stunningly beautiful wildflowers. And something else, lying scattered about the grass. Other teenagers, all ranging in gender and age. Bewilderment was, once again, all she could feel.
