The den was filled with soft snuffles and snores. A bundle of ebony fur shifted among the many reddish-brown pelts. The small black wolf blinked his bright blue eyes and yawned. A few of his den mates stirred in their sleep, but they did not wake. The wolf carefully stepped over his den mates toward the entrance. Leaving the safety of the cave, the wolf blinked. His eyes quickly adjusted to the moonlight, and they widened in surprise. For before him stood a unicorn. The mystical equine couldn't have been older than a filly. It stared calmly at the potential predator in front of it, unaware of the danger. The wolf stared, puzzled and transfixed, at the creature. After a moment, the small white unicorn lowered her head. A small dot of light appeared at the tip of her horn, growing brighter and brighter by the second. The wolf padded closer to the unicorn, eyeing the horn and the beaming light warily. Then, the unicorn shook and the bright light shot upwards. The wolf yelped and scrambled backwards as the dot of light touched the sky. A sort of fireworks display seemed to appear as the light burst apart and sizzled into streaks of flame. With the apparent danger gone, the wolf crept towards the unicorn. The creature seemed to be a bit dazed by its magical feat, but it looked ecstatic. The wolf shyly stuck out its tongue and licked the unicorn's cheek in a bid for friendship. Then unicorn's eyes sparkled mysteriously, and then it vanished as quickly and suddenly as it had appeared. The wolf whimpered and looked around, searching for its new friend. When it found no trace of the unicorn, the wolf howled its mournful song to the sizzling sky.

One great thing is the land where all the unicorns disappeared to. You will find that they have adapted to living where they do, making the best of being chased from their original homes. Now, the diversity is so great that it is hard to determine where the breeds begin and where they end.
A meadow is an appropriate place to begin, this being a stereotypical place for the unicorns. The unicorns of the meadows and the planes are lithe, suited to running along with the wind. They are generally along the lines of whites and golds, their manes shorter and their horns thinner. They are built for speed and aren't afraid to prove it.
The forest dwelling unicorns are harder to explain, being that there are so many in the forest. One type resembles a Kirin, looking more like a part of the forest than the forest itself. Their horns are wood-like and may even grow leaves or flowers. These are slender are more graceful in the confined spaces of the trees. These are mostly forestry colors, deep rich browns to white with spots like a birch tree. Another forest dwelling breed are larger, and are built heavier. Tending to stray off and avoid others these unicorns are nocturnal and seem to feed off the moon itself, them being stronger at the full moon and weaker at the new moon. They are hard to come by, and not much else is known of them exempt they are generally darker colors.
Moving away from the forest you will find some mountainous unicorns, climbing as nimbly as a mountain goat. Their fur is longer, keeping them warm in the high altitudes. Their hooves are split giving them a better feel for the rocks, and they are all muscle. Still, they are some of the most beautiful of the remaining unicorns. Their silvery white coats are not found anywhere else.
To finish off there are even desert dwelling unicorns. They are sandy colors, from golds to rich earthy reds, and tans. They have some of the greatest endurance of all the unicorns, facing scorching hot days and freezing cold nights. Sleek coats help to keep them cool, and they have shorter manes to help along those lines also.
So many more are left untold, their stories far more detailed and far more hard to find. These are just the more common unicorns, and some of the most worthy of my praise. Hopefully one day you too will unlock the secrets to their lands. Until then, keep your head up and have hope. One day you shall find them too.

The older man was in his forties, thick black hair streaked with grey here and there. His dark green eyes bore into his apprentice for asking the question for the eighth time since they had left. "Like I said before, we are dealing with a problem." seeing as how the boy was itching to find out he reluctantly told him where they were going. "Listen closely, because I will not repeat myself again," he said pointing at the boy. "We are meeting a few friends of mine, and then we are going to look for a creature that has been killing local farm animals. These people are already poor enough, they cant afford to keep having their animals killed off by some pest." he grimaced.
Looking to his master the boy frowned. "Do you know what kind of creature it is? I mean, farmers are usually prone to killing wolves, but obviously it isn't a wolf."
With a scowl the older man stopped his horse. "No, I do not know what kind of creature it is, and I do not know why the farmers will not kill it themselves. It isn't my concern, but it is however my job. Thus making it your job." The man was irritated by the selective alertness of his apprentice. "It isn't much farther until we reach the other group. They have the supplies, and I expect you to keep quiet. Okay?"
------------------------------------------------------------------
Upon meeting up with the other group the apprentice found himself silently studying all the other men who had joined the group. He had been expecting more men like his master, but all these men were younger, and stronger. Concern as to what they were hunting began to creep in, and he had to fight off the flood of questions he wanted to ask. It was strange to him to see all the men expressing their indifference and aplomb. They were now riding through a darkening forest, ready to set up camp for the night.
After little sleep the next morning took a toll on the younger boy. His shaggy brown hair fell over his face, obscuring the dark circles surrounding his eyes. It was in his nature to worry, and this kept him awake all night long. The apprentice's pervicacious nature was always a bother to the older man who was severely lacking in patience and was always serious. As they trekked on looking for the animal killer the boy found himself falling asleep in the saddle. Shaking himself awake once more he realized he was separated from the group. Looking around he couldn't find the way he had came, or any trace of the others. Desperately searching for them he began to feel like he was being watched. He wasn't the only one feeling that way, for his horse began to become antsy and flinched at every noise around.
It got to the point of the horse finally tossing the boy off and fleeing, leaving the apprentice stuck in a bush. While he struggles to free himself from the thorns he heard a noise coming from the bushes. Everything grew quiet again, so he began trying to free himself from the bush's grip when the noise started up again. Something crept along out of sight, circling the boy. A low growl sounded out making the boy freeze, watching the creature slide out of the undergrowth. He had never seen such a fearsome thing, and he found himself trying to think of the name of whatever he was seeing. As it grew closer watching its prey sit motionless in the thorn bush, it let out a hiss revealing every needle sharp tooth in its mouth.
Dragon. This was the word the boy so desperately tried to find. The dragon looked at the boy, and prepared itself for the kill. The cries of the men was enough of a distraction for the boy to pull himself free and run. Every ounce of adrenaline filled him as he darted through the trees. The dragon followed behind, letting out a frustrated roar as it stumbled through the forest. Following the voices the boy ran smack into the middle of the group. He pointed behind him with a quivering hand right before the dragon burst through the undergrowth.
