" It all began back when i was around the age of 4 or so ..." she began, now glancing up to the somewhat stormy sky, seeing the Englishman's emerald eyes practically glow compared to the darkness, only brightened more by any lightning that struck.
Flash-Back - age 4
It had been a cold winter up in Canada that year, the temperatures dropping below zero, almost to negative 20's on a regular basis. The girl had been 4 at the time, and she had been traveling with her parents across the city to find some sort of shelter. They were from out of town, and were trying desperately to get away from the storm that approaching fast. They drove for hours, their little girl half asleep in the back seat as she watched the snowflakes outside, more and more of them starting to gather onto the window and block the child's view of the outside. Her mother sat beside her, as her father drove the car.
The snow was getting worse, and all the places her parents tried to stop at were locked down for the storm, and all the hotels and shelters they went too were full with others trying to escape it. They kept driving, but the snow began to blind their view, and they didn't see the large 18 wheeler truck carrying a large metal tank of shipment .. everything went black after feeling horrid shake against the car, and hearing a disturbing crunch of metal against metal.
When the small child woke up, she could hear the sound of distant sirens, but her ears still rang from the earlier loud noise of the car getting hit. She felt she could not move, her body trapped in an odd position, and head aching horribly. Her vision was blurred, but she felt a fleeting warmth hold her close. It took the girl a few minutes to get her bearings, noticing that her mother, out of protection of her child, had grabbed her and held her close, with her mother's back facing toward the windshield, and the child being held within a half formed fetal position.
She could see that glass had found it's way onto her mother's skin, and snow had been stained with the large amount of red painting the car ... she could not see her father move at all in the front seat, his head laying on the air bag, which was soaked with red as well. As she gazed to her mothers face, hoping to find some life in her, she saw nothing, and her eyes went wide. Her mothers face had large streaks of red covering it, her eyes still wide open, and there was no comforting sound of her mother's heart beat to show the woman was still alive.
The girl began to get scared and started crying, hearing the sirens begin to draw closer, though still overpowered by the ringing that echoed in her ears. It felt like eternity before she could hear muffled voices in panic began to swarm the area. With her vision still slightly blurred, and the warmth from her mother's body having almost completely faded now, she tried to look to the windows for any sign of help. They were covered in an odd amber coloured fluid, but it slid down the window too slow to be oil ... it was then she realized it was maple syrup.
The girl tried to wiggle free, hoping to scream out and have someone find her, but as soon as she moved, the only scream that escaped her lips were in agony. Her body shot up with pain as she tried to move, making her return to a slightly huddled position with her now deceased mother. She cried where she lay now, unable to do anything. It was then a louder voice, closer to the car, seemed to call over to some others. She didn't quite hear what they said, but she was sure it was something along the lines of 'over here'.
That's when she began to hear the window begin to crack and break, the door's metal bending and ripping open. She was scared, thinking that whoever had done this to them was trying to finish the job after hearing her scream. She shut her eyes tightly, unable to stop her soft sobs and streaming tears as she felt a blast of harsh snowy wind enter the car ... the car door had been ripped off. "oh god ... it's worse then we thought." she could hear someone say, voice still a bit distorted by the ringing, though it had died down a bit now. She heard rushing footsteps, and could now hearing the panting breaths of several people. "all this ... by one truck?" another one asked. "move, move!" one voice said urgently. "can't you see one is still alive!" the voice continued, and she could almost feel the figure pointing toward her.
"quick, we need the ambulance over here, and we need t see if either of the parents have a pulse." the voice now said sternly. "yes sir!" she could hear several voices say, soon fading off into the distance. "it's okay little one ... everything will be okay." she heard the earlier voice speak, voice much more softer now compared to it's demanding tone just a few minutes ago. She weakly opened her eyes, vision now blurred a bit by the rushing snow ... but she could see the figure had blonde curly hair, that was caked with the falling snow. "it'll be okay ..." she heard him murmur, soon blacking out once more

She lay there in the over sized bed, watching the snow outside fall more gently then it had been earlier that week. Tears began to prick at the corner of her eyes, the memory of her bloody mother and father spring to life for a split moment before bringing her back to the current moment. She could hear muffled voices outside, and she knew who they belonged too now ... the blonde haired man she saw at the open car door at the accident, and a police man that was also at the scene. She didn't know their names, but she knew their faces now.
She had been told her parents didn't survive the crash, with her father getting the brunt of the damage, and her mother getting most of the after shock. If not for her mother, she would have been dead as well from the aftershock of the impact. She was lucky to even still be able to walk - not currently - but she had no broken spine that would prohibit her from walking in the future. It was all so fast ... and the event kept pushing it's way back into her mind, giving her reoccurring nightmares since then.
"We've found several relatives, but non are able to be reached immediately, and 2 family friends of these people can't afford to take in another child." she could hear the police man say from behind the large wooden double doors. "Keep trying to contact the relative ... grandparents, cousins, anything ... i will not have this child go without a family." she heard the blonde one speak. That word, family, stung at her like needles now ...

She was still recovering from her injuries, but was making progress, or so that's what the doctor with the odd grey hair told her and the blonde man standing next to him. "she should be able to walk within a few more weeks ... as for the other injuries, it is best to keep a close eye, and they are still very sensitive." the old doctor said softly, having a french accent to him. "thank you monsieur ... " the blonde spoke softly, watching as the doctor soon left the room. The blonde haired boy sighed, and soon sat down on a chair beside the girl's bed, looking at his hands for a while before looking up at her.
"we ... still can't really contact any of your relatives at the time being ..." he began, sorrow in his voice as he paused. "but ... i promised you that you would be okay .. so ... starting from today, considering me your adopted dad ... okay?" he asked in a hushed voice. The girl was a little upset at the thought of having a different father ... but ... she also didn't want to be put into any of those orphanages she heard about, so she gave a weak nod. The man smiled a little now at this, and soon said 'm-my name is Matthew Williams ... what's our name?" The girl was silent for a little while, but once she gathered up the courage again, she spoke her name.

The young girl, now the age of 6, was in her 'father's' office, playing with a polar bear toy she was given a few days ago. "Ah ... not again ... that won't work." she heard him grunt softly at his desk, scribbling on a piece of paper in agitation before crumpling it and tossing it into the trash bin across the room. He had a very bad aim, and a lot of the floor around the bin was now the target area for landings ... The girl glanced up at him, her dull grey violet eyes watching him. "papa ..." she spoke softly. "What's a maffya?" she asked. "Mafia" the man corrected, voice softening a bit as he spoke to the child.
"It's a large group of people who work together, kind of like a big family ... and they get help from other mafia, or get in trouble with them ... like ... how cousins fight." the man explained, trying to soften the topic as much as he could for the child. "oh ... and does dis maffya make papa happy?" she asked, eyes blinking a bit in curiosity now. "If papa could find a way to make one ... yes." he murmured, now going back to writing. The girl sat there for a few minutes as she watched him, and then soon looked back to her little polar bear toy. 'If making a maffya is important to papa ... then i'll help whatever ways i can for him.' she thought to herself, soon beginning to play with her toy once more.

It was scaring her now ... the laughter wasn't normal from he man she called father. It was very late at night, and she wasn't supposed to be up and about at this hour. The blonde man, named matthew, was standing in his office, watching multiple paper's fall, laughing rather oddly toward the ceiling. "it's done, it's finally done!" he cackled, now holding his gut from all the laughter. "after so many years ... it's finally done." he calmed down a bit, though still wasn't himself ... still wasn't the man she was used too.
"Pa ... pa?" she whispered, though quickly covered her mouth when she saw the man's head snap toward the door, probably having seen the small opened crack in it. She had no time to react as the man rushed toward the door, causing her to try and run, bt before she could get anywhere, she felt the man drag her by the back of her nightgown into the office.
That night ... she learned just how psychotic the man she called father could be, if found in that state ...
She didn't blame him though ... she didn't hate him like others might have. Yes, she felt a little hurt ... but she knew ... she knew deep down he only did that to her because he wanted her to know that she shouldn't ever find him like that again .. he had been worried for her ... and wanted her to stay away from him so that she wouldn't get hurt again ... at least when he was like that.
The next day, one of her cousins had come to try and take her with them. However, she had been so used to growing up with her current father, that she didn't want to leave, and tried to refuse. Though, her cousins weren't the most patient and kind of people, and tried to take her by force ... this was a huge mistake that they have made. Her cousins being dragged into the house by some of the workers there at the house, and brought to the basement.
"... i promised you ... you'd be okay." she heard a cold voice, like fresh snow, say behind her, sending a shiver up her spine. She could feel his hand firmly on her shoulder now, but she didn't dare look up at him ... knowing now what would happen if she did. "y- ... yes papa ... thank you." she whispered, soon feeling the grip loosen a bit and pat her on the head now. "come, dinner will be ready soon, and i made your favorite." she heard him say, making her gently look over her shoulder toward his back. "c-coming papa." she replied.

The man's serious gaze quickly scanned over the documents, before glancing up toward the younger girl in front of him. "... I have told you many times, you are not-" he was stopped when the girl slammed her small hands onto the table and glared at him with cold violet eyes. "you've sacrificed so many years of your life to take care of me, so why can i not try to return the favor and be in your mafia to protect you?!" she snapped.
The man starred at her for a long time, his eyes soon growing cold. "you're raising your voice at me?" he asked, his own voice stiffing a bit, and she could feel his anger begin to rise. The girl stood her ground, despite how she could feel the ice from his star form a lump in her throat. "yes." she replied sternly, taking in a breath and holding it. This was the first time she had opposed him since her adoption into the family, and she knew it was a risky move.
The man rose from his seat slowly, and placed his hands on the table. "Ashley ..." he spoke, after a few minutes of silence. "what ... have i told you ... about the mafia?" he asked, feeling that he was talking in a restrained voice, now seeming to slip something behind his back. "that it was harsh .." she started, earning a nod from him. "that it was cruel ..." she listed, earning yet another nod. "and most of all ... that it was dangerous." she finished, trying to keep her voice from shrinking. "good ..." he replied, now walking around the desk.
She did not move from her spot, feeling her body freeze now as he stood just a foot away from her side. "but you forgot one thing ..." he muttered, and her eyes widened a bit. "... that is is very ... unpredictable." he hissed. She felt the snapping point, and quickly pushed herself away from the desk, seeing the man hold a letter opener that had been sharpened in his hand, which now stuck itself into the wood of the desk. He glared at her, not once taking his eyes of her the entire time. He ripped the letter opener out from the desk and began to stalk toward the girl, a cold, distant look in his eyes.
The girl backed up, step by step, until she felt her back hit the door ... she was trapped. The man was a few feet from her now, and she frantically scanned for anything nearby she could use as a weapon. She was too late though, as the letter opener now stabbing into the part of the door that was just left of her face. The girl froze, a small squeak escaping her lips as she shut her eyes tightly now, waiting for the worst. "... you have much ... to learn." she heard him speak, his cold breath brushing against her face with how inches away it was.
"Fine .." he replied, now pulling away from the girl a bit to give her some room, leaving the letter opener in the door. The girl was shocked, now weakly looking over toward her father, who was fixing his suit. 'you may join the mafia ... but you must go through lots of training until you can be sent out of the field." he sighed. The girl weakly smiled, feeling tears fill her eyes. She soon ran over and hugged his waist, burying her face into his stomach. "i promise papa ... i'll be the very best and won't let you down ... i'll make you proud, i promise." she replied, unable to hold back how happy she felt, despite how scared she had been before.
End of Flash Back
The girl now let a deep sigh escape her lips once her story was finished, taking a sip from her tea. "... do not take it the wrong way Arthur ... Matthew never hit me as a child, nor did he injure me in any way ... if anything they were merely tactics as a child to keep me from getting hurt due to his unstable manor at the time." she said simply. "However, due to how many times i saw him in that state, i learned how to cope with his ... issue, and managed to slowly over the years lessen how many times he went through them. As i spoke of before, this year currently he has only gone through one 'full' snap so to speak, and i am proud of his progress." She said with a look down to her tea, taking another sip. "there have been many times that he has lost temper in the house, but that's nothing a quick pancake snack won't fix." she chuckled softly, now relaxing a bit in the chair as she once again glanced to the window.
