The castle's tall turret penetrated the inky sky. From where Melody stood, it was as if the whole sky revolved around that one point. The pin-hole stars shone brightly down, their light reflecting on the pale face of the moon. It hurt her eyes to look directly at them; they were so close, she felt like she could reach out and touch them. Her skin should have been burnt, but instead it was stained a chalky white. Her eyes were like fire, the color of scorching heat.

The sound of a bell echoed around the empty abyss of night, and she fled, through the great oak door and into the grand palace. An owl lingered at the window like a ghost, watching her as she ran up the steps, two at a time. Once, she slipped and fell on the cold marble, but no tears leaked from her eyes. The brief pain was nothing compared to the infinite ache that haunted her day and night.

The corridor before her stretched infinitely before her, the crimson carpet snaking down it. No windows opened up into it, so it was flooded with darkness and shadows. As if in a dream, the more she ran, the further away from the end she seemed, and like a nightmare she had to continue.
