Austin knew she was worried about something. About what, he didn't know. For a moment he contemplated flying off a few feet and changing, simply so he could actually communicate, but decided against it for now. Instead, he gave a little chirp in response and shook his head no, it wasn't selfish. He had done it plenty of times, and never seen it as selfish, because the ability had been given to him. By crazed scientists, or not, he still had the ability.

Evelyn looked back at the bird and laughed softly when it shook its head, almost like it understood her. "Well I'm glad you think it's not selfish." She said with another laugh. "I think I'm going crazy, talking to a bird and actually thinking it understands me." She said with a small shake of her head. She closed her eyes and let out a soft sigh.

Austin flapped his wings in an attempt to shrug, and chattered on-even if she couldn't understand him-about how she wasn't crazy, but it was him that was. Pretending to be a bird to talk to a girl. Wow. He shook his head for a moment, then chirped and fluttered off into the trees. After a moment of consideration, he changed to his human shape, and brushed his black hair from his blue eyes. He grabbed his pack from where it sat and pulled it onto his shoulders before walking out, and back to Evelyn.

Evelyn frowned slightly when the bird left. It was much better being with the bird then alone. She shrugged it off and started plucking at the grass. She glanced up when she heard someone walking towards her, thinking it was Santiago or Erin. She jumped up in surprise when she saw that it wasn't them, nor was it anyone she knew. "Oh, h-hello." She said softly, taking a few steps back not knowing if this person was going to hurt her or not.

Austin smiled faintly. I'm not going to hurt you. He said, sensing her fear through her emotions.If I wanted to I would've have hurt you earlier, when you thought I was a simple bird. He sat down across from where she had been and smiled, and plucked at the grass as she had moments before. He shrugged. You seem troubled.

As Erin's arms closed around him, the ground shuddered along with Santiago once again - the rumble of a restless volcano, coming so close to the thing that could set it off. He shut his eyes tightly against the surge of Erin's energy flowing across him. The last thing they needed was an earthquake bringing the whole camp down and drawing the organisation's attention. Slowly, he extricated himself from the embrace, and nodded at the space he put between them, hoping Erin would understand. The comfort was appreciated and well-received, but what Erin's touch brought with it was still (even after all this time) both unnerving and addictive.

He wasn't so fooled by Erin's words, but tried his best to accept them, hoping his nerves would be smoothed. "Either way, it's not going to be easy for them." He muttered grudgingly, crossing his arms like some petulant child. "Damn parasites, everyone willingly staying with those bastards." With a long sigh, he rubbed his hand across his brow, then gave a slightly forced-looking smile. "As long as you've got my back, I think it'll be fine."

Adelaide was stuck on examining the same tube of toothpaste as Rhianna spoke, unable to move herself and put it down. She opened her mouth to reply, then closed it again - caught between a willingness to hide in the humor and the restless irritation of a cornered animal. She went with the former, but executed it rather poorly - her weak smile shattered almost instantly. "I'm sure you will--" Her words were meant to carry the easy jovial tone they shared, but came out stilted and uncertain. Adelaide dropped the tube and twisted her fingers together.

"Will you?" She swallowed, then turned and rested against the table many of the supply boxes (a startling number of them empty) were stacked on. Something in her wanted to pick a fight, a snarling, ugly thing searching for a crude but effective way of releasing her pent-up energy without revealing their identities to the others, poking and provoking. An insecurity searching for reassurance, hidden in layers of bitterness and vitriol. "Do I mean that much to you, Ice Queen?"

xxxAdelaide was feeling the stress just as much as she was, evident in her weak smile that melted away as easy as snow under the hot sun. Her fingers twisted the tube of toothpaste, and she fell silent, obviously agitated. "Will you?" Rhianna opened her mouth to reply, but something flashed in Adelaide's eyes, pent up frustration dying to be spent. Her next words were unsurprising, given what she was feeling, but they did sting slightly.
xxxShe stood up, brushing her hair over one shoulder. "You're not like the rest," she said simply. "They have a heightened sense of their own importance and you were the only one not to get on my nerves and receive crippling frostbite within a week." Rhianna finished putting her own things away and stowed the bags she had used to carry them against one wall. She turned to head out the door, but faced Adelaide once more. "Pull yourself together Adelaide." Her tone was sharp, commanding, but not cruel. "We have a job to do and getting emotional over it could result in our capture or death. Which are one in the same." With that said, Rhianna turned and headed outside, just in time for another tremor to rumble through the ground. Santiago was not a happy camper it seemed.
xxxShe turned and headed towards the edge of camp, deciding to take a short walk through the woods to clear her head. "Do I really mean that much to you, Ice Queen?" Adelaide's words echoed in her mind as she entered the forest, bringing back an early memory from the lab. The scientists had grown her in the lab, she had no true parents besides the donors who had contributed to her birth. Nameless people who were silenced, most likely, due to their part in Precision Horizons. When she had been old enough to understand the scientists around her, they had said her name was Rhiannon, and that it meant great queen. She would be a leader one day, they promised. Rhianna had shorted the name when she was older still, deeming Rhiannon too much of a mouthful. The meaning still stuck with her of course, as did her powers. Ice queen. Is that what Adelaide thought of her? Cold, beautiful, and utterly without pity? Perhaps she wasn't wrong, to be perfectly honest. It could have been the stress talking, of course.
xxxIgnoring her train of thought for the moment, Rhianna extended a hand and created a whirl of snowflakes in the air, watching with a faint smile as they drifted down onto her hand and sat for a moment before melting away. It was a childish thing, to be admiring the beauty of her power when she was supposed to be working, but Rick could damn well wait if he wasn't going to send anyone else but them. Patience was virtue, wasn't that how the saying went? Continuing through the woods, Rhianna stopped at the sound of nearby voices. Evelyn's stood out to her, even after only meeting her that morning, but the other was one she didn't recognize. Curious, Rhianna ventured slightly closer, the voices becoming clearer as she went.

That shot her down quickly enough. She flushed, both at the compliment and the reprimand Rhianna delivered before stalking off. Left alone with her thoughts, with her quickly dissipating irritation and the slight burn of embarrassment still high on her cheeks, Adelaide slumped against the table. It groaned under the added weight and a fleeting thought ran across her mind - how she could empathize perfectly. Whilst she knew her partner wasn't the Ice Queen persona she could adopt in the blink of an eye... well. The lines between pretend and reality were sometimes very, very blurry. Sometimes Adelaide questioned if Rhianna herself wondered whether she was playing a role or simply being herself. Whether it made much difference, in the end, if it affected the choices she made; the words she spoke.

Bringing her mind firmly back to the present, she realized that in the current situation, she'd rather they weren't apart. If they were to be interrogated by one of the group, she wanted them to be together. If a fight was about to break out, she needed to know Rhianna was okay. If she had to consider the harsh reality of their situation... there was no one else she'd rather be with.

Adelaide saw her disappear into the forest and it was simple enough to follow along (simpler still to grab a pretty purple wildflower whilst she walked). It took a bit more to ignore the fact she was doing a lot of following - but she managed. When she spotted her partner, she seemed to be investigating something - the something became more apparent when she heard the low voices too, Evelyn and a mysterious someone. A small smile lingered on her lips, and lingered still as she blinked, appearing directly in front of Rhianna.

"Hasn't anyone told you it's impolite to eavesdrop?" She asked, then put her hand, and the flower it held, between them - offering it to the other girl. "A peace offering. You're not like the rest, either."

"You know I'll be here, Santiago. I did promise." Erin smoothed his newly black hair back against his scalp, knotted his fingers together at the nape of his own neck. Then he smiled, a mischievous expression. "So, you still can't handle even a hug? A year ago you'd been able to last much longer than that."

Feeling his face warm slightly in response to the comment, Santiago cleared his throat and reached out, flicking lightly at a stray curl of hair that so closely mirrored his own. What he could and couldn't have handled a year earlier was firmly planted in a far corner of his mind - he parted his lips to relay this to Erin, but got caught on the words. He did his standard nervous shuffle from foot to foot, then crossed his arms as if to keep himself still. He found it ridiculous how easily he could be wound up by this man.

"Of course I can handle it." He lied, trying his hardest to not petulantly stomp his foot. Perhaps more childish still was his way of proving this - he leaned down and pressed a feather-light kiss to Erin's lips. Brief out of modesty and, of course, the knowledge of how unpredictable Erin's powers made his own. Then pulled away and raised an eyebrow as if to say, see? There's your proof.
