name
i'd name this absolutely gorgeous girl
cygnet phylia! 'cygnet' due to her wing like markings, and 'phylia' due to her love of mechanics, with the name being taken from the letters that make up 'stymphalian', which are steel birds from greek mythology. she has many nicknames, the most common being 'cygnet', 'phylia' and 'phyllie'.

gender
as noted on the reference, phyllie was DFAB, and identifies as a girl.

age
cygnet is six years old. her birthday is november fifteenth, but she's referred to herself as 'nearly seven' from the moment she had 364 days to go!

mechanics?
Ever since she retrieved a small wooden car powered by an elastic band from Jammy Dodger's bin of useless school things, Cygnet has been fascinated by woodwork, mechanics and engineering. Her parents were delighted to find something their restless and detached daughter loved and so provided her with endless Lego kits, some with working motors or lights, to put together. She worked through them at great pace, and would give them to Albus to meddle with when she'd finished - she had no use for them otherwise and every sibling knows the power of favours to hold against their elders! Yet as time went by these became too easy and repetitive for Cygnet to really enjoy - in fact around the time she was to enrol in Primary school - and Albus found that these toys blocking shelf space for his puzzle collection. So in a way it was perfect timing for her move to school, although Hart'yel and Rose were worried about her organisational and social skills. She came home from her first day with bright eyes, flushed cheeks... and a permission slip to join the DT Club at school. This was aimed at much older children but, as her letter from the teacher assured, he'd be constantly supervising her and she seemed eager and intelligent enough. The four year old was so excited her parents eventually agreed, and each Wednesday she'd stay an extra hour after school with a pack of sandwiches. At first she made simple things - a wooden candle holder ("How
practical!" remarked Jammy) but soon she was moving onto the more complex projects, such as the car Jammy made aged 12. She even started making a few simple puzzles for Albus - he completed them in seconds, but was grateful for his sister's kind gesture. Cygnet enjoys challenging herself with more and more complicated pieces - she's moved from wood to metal with the help of her teacher and sometimes helps out with engineering at home. So much has changed in the few years since Phylli discovered mechanics, but one thing hasn't - the sandwiches always have to be jam, as both a tribute and tease to her big sister whose discarded school project started Cygnet's passion.

personality
forgetful / clumsy
'my sandwiches!'It was your average Wednesday after school - Cygnet raced out of class to be the first to the DT club. Her teacher met her with as patient smile, as always, and helped her work on her current project. Why the rush? Well, it was the most complex thing she'd ever attempted - a quiz game for Albus' birthday. Her teacher was doing the programming for her whilst she built the parts for the circuit board under his careful eye, and put together the device. She kept all the parts at school, knowing she'd lose them at home, and was surprisingly delicate in this fiddly field of mechanics. Yet all good things must come to an end, and Cygnet's organisation came to a rather sticky one! She was so concentrated on her work that she barely noticed when half an hour had gone by, marking snack time. She grabbed out her jam sandwich in her left paw and her spare length of wire to be binned in the other. She wandered over, her head full of potential questions to challenge even her big brother - her regard of him was high and she thought no question too hard for him - and tossed the contents of her right paw into the bin. Walking back to the bench, she took a bite out of her 'sandwich'. It was surprisingly rubbery.. and metallic.. she spat it out into her paw and saw it was just spare wire. It took her a moment to register what had happened, and people began to giggle as she stared, puzzled.
"My sandwiches!" she cried, sprinting over to the bin. But it was too late for this snack to be salvaged. Her head hanging down with shame, she walked back to her bench and explained what happened to the teacher. A small smile creeped across his face, and Cygnet nearly cried out in frustration. It wasn't funny!
"Cygnet, don't be upset! I'm not laughing about what happened to your sandwiches, it's what's happened to my sandwiches!" Cygnet looked up, puzzled. He held out her sandwich bag in his paw, and she blushed deeply. "I know you consider yourself quite the chef Phylli, but I'm afraid to say wire and jam just isn't my favourite combination," he grinned, guiding her paws gently into the next task.
determined / creative
'i have to find the best idea, i'll keep trying until i- oh!'"And make sure you don't stay up reading too late tonight Albus, you have a big contest tomorrow,"
"I won't mum," he sighed, kissing his mother goodnight. Rose smiled at her son, stroking his head fondly before leaving his bedroom, closing the door softly behind her. She yawned sleepily - she loved her wonderful children, but they could certainly be tiring! - and padded over to her room. She was just slipping into bed when she heard the tell-tale scratching of a pencil on paper. With a heavy sigh she patrolled the corridor to see who was a midnight writer - she had her suspicions already. She passed by Albus' room, where she could hear the faint hum of a bedside lamp and a page turning, before the snap of the light being switched off. Yet the pencil continued, so she walked over to Cygnet's room. She walked in, then took a step back as she saw her daughter practically hidden by scrunched up pieces of paper on her desk.
"Honey?" she said, worried. She walked over to her daughter and hugged her. "Bedtime was ages ago dearie, what are you doing?" she asked, not unkindly. Cygnet screwed up her face in concentration, marking out a few lines on her notepad, before sighing and ripping out the page. She looked up to her mother in earnest.
"Tomorrow there's a big event at school for the best invention, and I've been trying to make one all week so I could get a prize and surprise you but I can't think of anything!" she said sadly, before brightening. "But I'm not going to give up, even if it takes all night!"
Rose shook her head. "But Phyllie you have to sleep, dear," she gently reminded her. "Maybe a better idea will come in the morning, after a nice hot chocolate and a bedtime story?"
Cygnet nodded glumly. "Okay then mummy,"
Rose began her favourite bedtime story from when she was a child:
'The Evergreen Tree'. Towards the end, just as she began to speak of the three proud and tall trees, Cygnet sat straight up in bed and reached for a pencil. Rose looked at her questioningly.
"Mummy you've given me the best idea! I'll design a bird box made from the branches of a spruce tree! Obviously they'll have to be synthetic, but they'll be similar in structure so they're light enough to put within a spruce tree to be safe from elements, and they'll be warm too!" Her eyes shone with excitement and joy, and Rose's face lit up as she saw how happy her daughter was.
"Well done my dear," she said, kissing her gently. Cygnet squirmed uncomfortably, and Rose let her go, smiling all the same. "Now why don't I help you sketch it out so we can all have a good night's sleep?" They did this, and Cygnet went into school the next day confident and excited. Rose was certainly busy whilst she was out! She was almost late picking her daughter up, but she ran into the playground and found Cygnet clutching an envelope, looking for her mother. Cygnet ran over to her mother and handed her the envelope. "Mummy read it, read it!" she said, grinning. Rose scanned down it.
"You've won, you've won!" she said delightedly. "Now, I have a surprise for you at home in your bedroom!"
Cygnet raced straight up to her room and saw her bed was painted green.. "Like a pine tree!" Phyllie said, beaming. "Mummy it's perfect! But.. how did you know I'd win?"
Rose looked at her daughter seriously. "I knew you'd win because I believe in you, but this isn't a reward for winning. It's a reward for having such a wonderful idea, and simply a gift because I want you to know that you'll always have a haven with us, winter or summer."

relationships
Cygnet gets along far better with her brother than her sister. Whilst
their hobbies are different, they're more compatible, and require
the same skills: sometimes Cygnet will chip in her opinion on a
puzzle, and Albus might show her how something should best
fit together on a project. She enjoys her brother's company: he's
quieter than her sister, but she knows he's honest and will stand
up for what he believes in, not deceiving anyone and not looking
to take over the world [unlike someone she could mention]. She
also finds she can always go to him if she has any troubles at
school; he's empathetic and helps advise her in the innocent and
gentle way of a nine year old.
