{ ＩＮＫＬＩＮＧＳ v.4 } A Thread For Writers

I know I'm really new around here, but I'd like some advice/suggestions on what I think may be a good story setting to write about. So, this is kinda based off of my beliefs with the supernatural, but, hold onto your seatbelts.

The time frame would be unsettled (not the past, or a really far away future), max amount of time between now and time frame would be three, four years max. Not a dystopian society or anything, just regular human life. Scientists, however, have discovered that many humans have a natural sixth sense to see/hear/experience the supernatural (for sake in this story, no vampires/werewolves/fairies/etc, just ghosts (bad or good natured, for the most part), and it is not a figure of your imagination. Out of Body experiences become way more common to the public, and are public knowledge, but due to a few accidents, the public fears having them. Some test subjects that had OBE's ended up stuck in the realm between what is after, and Earth, because they didn't get back to their body before a bad natured/good natured ghost took over their body.

Let me explain further on the whole OBE thing.

If you are in between sleep and consciousness, you can essentially "tug" your soul from your body, and look down at your body as just a sliver of yourself (this is said to be a true thing). My theory is that people that have OBE's that are sucked back into their bodies immediately are born with built-in sensor that tells them a "bad" natured soul is trying to take over their body, and attaches them back to their bodies. However, some of these people are not born with that sensor, and due to lacking it, are not alarmed of their body being taken over, and are left for eternity in the realm of souls, unless they steal someone else's body.

My main character will be having obe's, (she does have that sensor) but she refrains from returning to her body a couple of times, etc. I don't even know. I'm writing this at 2:14 in the morning?? Yay/nay? Something? Comment? Suggestion?

I got seriously confused about OBEs until the end because I think of the Queens birthday/New Years honours...if you'd want to write for UK/commonwealth countries, you might want to consider that

Ah, that 2 in the morning bug. That's always when you come up with the best ideas, isn't it? ^^

I need to point out the incorrect statement that the separation of the soul from the body is a "true thing" in our world. A soul is not an observable phenomenon, and cannot be proven to be true or not. There are as many natural explanations for why "Out-of-Body" experiences occur as there are supernatural ones. It would really bug me if I didn't mention that - I can't stand seeing misinformation perpetuated. XP

That said, it's your story, and you should write whatever you want, and make your world however you want, and if that includes out-of-body-experiences and ghosts that's great! Including your personal beliefs and theories will make the story come across as much stronger.

I think it's a fantastic concept actually. Sort of a bodysnatchers thing meets paranormal? Very neat. The only problem I see with it is a lack of a central conflict or plot. What is the main character fighting for? I don't mean there has to be literal fighting, but what does she want? And what's preventing her from achieving that? That's your conflict. It can be as simple as getting home in time for dinner, or as huge as saving the world, but it needs that conflict that will drive the plot forward.

Boop! I've started writing a new short story focusing on a woman who goes what I can only describe as insane after the death of her fiancé. She was originally believed to have a mental illness that made one highly suicidal but her logs of the days before she died may have disproved that theory.
I'm not sure if I should continue writing since I already have a story focusing heavily on death and I would prefer to write other things as well but I also really like the idea. Any suggestions?

@elf, that sounds like a really cool idea despite it being pretty depressing. also, i'd suggest researching an actual mental illness and picking one instead of making your own since I think it'd be easier to write if you know symptoms of your particular illness.

Gosh yes, when I start writing, I have an idea for the next! I just squirrel it away on paper until I've finished, which will probably bequite a while now...actually I don't know I have lots of time, I might go to the library and just write! So when I finish the first draft I'll start on writing the other book, which I'm planning to be short(er) anyway. then I'll just swap between them editing until I'm happy!

Would anybody be interested in reading my MLP:FiM story?

It's basically about a pony who moves to Hoovesdale in Equestria and meets 5 other ponies and they soon become best friends. There are also two Princess called Dawna dn Dusk who raise and lower the moon and the sun everyday and night. One dya, Dawn goes missing and, because it happened at night, Dawn was not there to raise the sun so all of Equestria is now in total darkness. They find out a threat more pwoerful than anythign they've ever faced before is coming and that Dawn could be ont he brink of death, and the 5 young ponies join together with Dusk and go in search of Dawn, Dusk's beloved older sister. They also need to find out what the plan is of the threat and they need to stop it before it is too late for all fo Equestria, and Dawn.
