A fair point. One of the unfortunate bits of fiction is that it's got its own weird rules that make something that might happen int he real world considered unacceptable in a story, unless you have a crazy talented writer.
To take your example, someone may be altered drastically by a divorce or rejection, and that has happened before, but in fiction, it wouldn't fly. Ashfur would have had to show signs early on that he's not mentally sound, or terrible at handling rejection, or even just manipulated by Hawkfrost to make us believe that he would do those things.
Plus, to be fair, attempted murders aren't really considered normal effects of rejection. I think I'll be able to better explain my point once I get to the books, though.
