Since when is gifting others on your birthday a tradition in Germany?

I dunno all, I live in Germany right now and all of my friends give us stuff on their birthday. They said it was a tradition here.

I'm native German and I never heard of that being a tradition. XD I only know about this at Christmas. But maybe it depends on where they live in Germany.
