Born into wealth, Lucian grew up immersed in the lies, manipulations, and corruption that epitomizes aristocracy. He was groomed since childhood to become a high ranking member of society, a man who could bring great honor to his family and be fit to wed anyone. And he did. At the age of manhood, fourteen, he was wedded to a stunning young duchess, Mary. Their courtship was nonexistent, having been arranged by both party's parents. They were not in love, but it was their duty to their families to carry on as though they were. She was beautiful, her dowry and reputation more than suitable, and her family guaranteed the safety of his own. The thirteenth century was a troubling time, rumors raced through palace walls about the Mongols coming to invade Europe, and the Pope was in the midst of leading the last of the Crusades. His marriage was not something he could afford to lose. On All Hallows' Eve, Lucian held his twenty-second birthday celebration. At the stroke of midnight, he was to meet his wife in their chambers for her special surprise. Upon his entrance, something sharp dug into his lower spine. Mary held him at knife point, and what transpired that night is something that Lucian would never speak of for centuries to come. It was that night that he endured the most agony that he had ever felt, at the hands of a woman. He struggled against his turning, fought with every ounce of strength that he had. He even attempted to murder Mary. A thin, white, hardly visible to the mortal eye, line runs straight across his neck. It pains Lucian every so often, and he can be found tracing it when he's lost in thought. To this day, Mary is still alive and amongst the shadows of his existence. Whenever she chooses to reappear in his life, he is forced to obey his maker's orders. In present day, Lucian resides on an expansive, wealthy estate. He owns over one thousand acres of pasture, and is obsessed with the security of his property line. He does not trifle with women nor children, for he refuses to have any liabilities in his life. He is the owner of a successful breeding business, supplying England and its surrounding nations with Europe's finest horses. In his spare time, he practices as a custom-order, high-end blacksmith with a specialty in knives and swords. He gained knowledge about the delicacies of sharp-tipped metal as time passed around him. He enlisted in wars upon wars, facing the harsh brutalities of death but being unable to join them, but not for lack of trying. Eventually he rose to be respected militarily, but that was not enough for Lucian. If he could not be killed by sword, then he wanted to be feared by it. Through his merciless abuse of his swordsmanship, he grew to learn the blacksmith trade. Occasionally, Lucian will hold balls on the Black Estate, and when he does, nobody misses it. His grandiose tendencies earned him a party reputation that in actuality is trivial to him. He is rarely seen with anyone or out in public, and is rumored to hold illicit hunting activities in the woodlands on his property. There are more rumors than facts known about Lucian, something that has come to his attention in light of the recent killings. Lucian knows that he must eventually answer to the inquiries of the detectives, but in the mean, he is more concerned with the silencing of whomever is disturbing the peace.

Arielle was born as middle-class French citizen, something that is not always taken kindly to by the English. Until the age of fourteen, she resided in a country manor buried deep in the heart of southern France. It was a fair sized property, with a stable complete with horses on it. Elle spent most of her days outside in nature, with the animals. When her father ran into gambling debts that turned into imminent danger, they uprooted their lives and headed to England, where her mother had family. It was a long journey, and her mother had never had outstanding health. Her mother became terminally ill, and passed away not long after they arrived safely at Elle's aunt's house. Distraught, her father lost what little integrity he had in himself and self-medicated with gambling and drinking. Her aunt knew that it would be detrimental to a young lady's virtue to have a drunken father as her reputation, so she sent Elle off to a 'family friend', a rich man by the name of Lucian who Elle's aunt promised would keep her safe, well taken care of, and most importantly, would help her be a proper lady. At first, Elle was intimidated by the dark, tall man who spoke very little and looked at her the way a hawk looks at a rat: pity and superiority. Her first years on his estate were torturous, filled with etiquette classes, his consistent ridicule at her French background and lack of proper education, and absolute loneliness. Eventually, she wormed her way into the horses. It was the only thing she could gain Lucian's respect with because both he and she knew that it was her talent. At present day, she has been Lucian's employee for five years, his acquaintance for longer, and the only person who sees him on a daily basis for even longer. She wasn't fooled by her living with him, though, for she knew that the man could not possess any feelings more than that of a snake. She instead busied herself with making something out of her life. She was of age to be married, but no man in his right mind would take a fancy to a girl who lives alone with another man. Aside from that, she was too quiet to make friends easily anyhow. She could pull off the wealthy aristocrat look, though, for Lucian spoils her with dresses and lavish gifts to make up for the fact that she was absolutely alone in the world. Elle has a knack for eavesdropping, and has henceforth collected noble's secrets for years. She is invisible, and nobody expects her to actually be listening. Elle is used to going about her business unseen, so the idea of the recent killings bringing the police force into Lucian's home--potentially questioning her, as well--makes her terribly nervous. She is incredibly stubborn, however, and loyal to him until the end. If she ever found out who was committing the murders, and it was Lucian or someone she knew of, she would not hesitate to lie to the detectives.
