Do your family/friends know about your characters? If so, how did they find out and how did they react?
My sister does and some of my friends do. I do wish some of my friends hadn't found out though, because they really don't understand. They found out through my drawings.
I'm fine with my sister knowing though; she has characters as well.

Well my family kinda knows... we play WoW so they have video game characters... what they don't know is that I based my blood elf paladin off of a character I got here on CS... They also know I draw allot and write allot so I don't think their that surprised. Although they don't know how many characters I actually have. My brothers kinda have and idea about how many characters I have and thought I was weird and had gone insane...

My best friends know and help me come up with cool names and personalities. One of my friends even has her own character army and persona.

My friends know a little bit, because I've told them I've made some money doing this kind of thing. My family does not know, but really it's none of their business xD Im an adult and I use my own time/money so ~

I actually don't know anyone IRL who does this. But even if I did I probably wouldn't discuss it with them. Characters are very personal for me. I dont like just talking about them with everyone.

All of my online friends know i'm furry trash (most of them are furries/fur friendly anyway) so no worries there. only three irl are interested. family doesn't know about the character side, but they know i draw

Well, my family only knows a few of my characters and my friends have to hear me talk about them. Everyone finds out when I start drawing them and when they see what I'm spending all of my cash on. My family really dislikes how I'm using my money and my friends think it's a bit weird but ehh, I worked for my money so i can spend it on something I love.

just wanted to answer this since it's interesting reading other people's answers! the majority of my friends at school have their own characters, and a number of them are also on CS/DA/tumblr and are exposed to the whole owning/buying/selling characters & art stuff. i'm super happy that i have so many friends who know about this community; it's really great and it's cool talking about our characters n stuff. apart from them, only my parents know that i have characters and that i do commissions, although i feel like they think it's childish or something ene

Umm.....no. Having characters in my family or friends is considered weird. I mostly keep my characters to myself, save for the people here or on DA. I tried explaining it to my mom once, and she just looked at me funny. Now she just like asks what I am drawing but other than that she doesn't really ask. I can talk to my cousin about it, but that is really it...which sucks. I think people look at characters or making characters as odd, but honestly, it makes me more creative and these characters are so complex they could easily fit into a fiction novel or the like. Unfortunate that people have a stigma about this, at least in my life. Maybe people i love will open up more later down the road and be more understanding.

Well, lets go in a list, shall we?
My mom sort of knows. For years now she has not understood it, and often disregards my art because of it. Somehow there is something wrong with drawing a character such as my sona Khan, that's not an 'actually animal' [ie a corn snake or a plain horse]. I try to explain that 1) I can make a small profit off of characters and 2) What would I do with a plain drawing of a horse when I could draw my demon horse and both display and enjoy the art? She has lightened up over the years and occasionally asks about my commissions and characters.
I have another friend who is a novelist- she sort of understands, but whenever she sees my on CS she generally remarks "oh that weird Chicken site again". She is, however, impressed with some of my equine characters.
My best friend is the one that understands. She is not part of the digital art abd character world, but she often fabricated human or alien roleplay characters. She's my only real life friend that understands, she and I roleplay. Though her characters are humanoid and mine are animal, we've adopted a sort of compromise between it- her characters and mine are aliens, her's have powers and mine have one shapeshift between a human form and that of the animal characters I have online. It works well and is a good way to roleplay our characters.
Past that I have a few close online friends who understand- some are on CS, but I have two roleplay buddies from when I was maybe 12 that I talk to often on Facebook, they get it. Its a shame thought, Ive spoken with them for years and never met them- they live in opposite corners of the US.
