I'm here to write a tale of two sisters, very similar yet very different in many ways.
They dwelled in a land whose name has been long forgotten, a kingdom where cats made of pottery, china, and the like was quite the norm.
The first sister was gentle and fair. She treated everyone with kindness and hospitality, her core being filled to the brim with positivity. She was a very cheery cat, always optimistic and positive, looking past the negative qualities a cat may be in possession of and bringing out the good in them. She lived a very simple life in a quaint cottage by a stream, always willing to help any travelers that happened to come by her way. She was selfless to the point of giving away food and other supplies to complete strangers, no matter how they looked like or how trustworthy they were.
The second sister, on the other paw, did not quite act the same way as the first. She was made of glass; She did not possess the elegant, and beautiful designs her sister of porcelain wore on her gleaming pelt. She was just..Glass. Transparent. Simple. Plain. There was nothing very special about her. Most just saw right through her at first glance, treating her like she didn't exist, noticing her only when she made her presence known.
Unlike the first, the second sister was full of envy.
She despised her kind sister. She was unique, and adored by many for her loving nature. On the other paw, she was a glass cat. She was common. Forgettable. There were so many qualities her sister possessed that she knew she would never have. A kind and loving heart, breathtaking beauty, and fabulous hair. Oh, how she adored those lovely curls, softer than a duckling's downy feathers, always even and neatly arranged. Every time she brushed her sister's hair, her heart filled with desire. It seemed silly, but it was true.
Her sister was her idea of perfection, a level of perfection she would never attain.
The first sister wanted nothing more in life other than to be happy and spread happiness to others. She was satisfied with life she had, living with her sister who she loved dearly. Meanwhile, the second one thought differently. She wanted more than the simplicity the tiny little cottage had to offer. She dreamt of living a life of royalty. Living in a faraway castle, everything she wanted at her fingertips. Or, well, paws. Showered in fame and fortune, revered all across the land. Yes, that was who she wanted to be.
One day, an old woman happened to be passing by. Weakened by hunger and fatigue, she collapsed at the two sisters's doorstep.
Immediately, the first sister rushed to help the exhausted elder and welcomed her inside, whilst the second snorted with disdain and ignored their guest.
After treating her with food and water, the old woman gratefully thanked the first sister, who insisted that she stay for a while to rest.
The old woman declined her offer, telling her she had to leave at once. As a thank you gift, she gave the first sister a shimmering turquoise stone. It was unlike any jewel she had seen before. The old woman told her that it could grant her a wish, but she must choose carefully, for the wishing stone would only grant wishes that had good and pure intentions behind it.
Amazed, the first sister turned to thank the old woman for the gift, but she was gone.
The second sister who saw this was filled with jealousy. How come her sister got a gift? What about her?
Did she not deserve a present as well?
In the middle of the night, the second sister crept into her sister's bedroom, where she lay asleep. She spotted the gemstone which the first sister had woven into a necklace, resting on top of her heart. Chuckling softly making sure her sibling did not hear her, the second sister silently removed the necklace, and whispered her wish.
I wish that I was great. Greater than my perfect little sister. I want to be noticed. Not blank. Transparent. Bland. I wish that for once I was better...than her.
Instead of granting her wish..The power of the stone rebounded. Instead of turning her into the beautiful, unique and majestic cat she wanted to become, she felt the core of her being begin to crack. Voices whispered in her head.
Wishes made out of jealousy are corrupted and you are a fool for thinking we would grant your selfish desires. Now let's see how you would like yourself to be corrupted by your own envy.
She was both literally and figuratively falling apart. She wailed in agony as more spiderweb like cracks spread through her fragile glass body.
Awoken by the noise, the first sister gaped in horror as she saw the terrible state her sister was in.
She rushed over to clutch her frail sibling, who had collapsed on the ground.
"How did this happen?"
"It was the stone, the stone is doing this to me!"
The second sister was racked with sobs as pieces of herself began falling to the ground.
"Please, make this stop!" The first sister begged as her sibling who she cradled in her arms began to deteriorate faster and faster.
The curse cannot be ceased.
The first sister shook her head and cried out,
"She's my sister! You can't do this to her! She made a mistake! Please, save her!"
If you are so intent on saving your beloved sibling, there is one way.
"Please, tell me!"
The only way to prevent her demise is if the a portion of the curse were to be transferred to you. Negativity is slowly destroying her, and to balance it out, some of the negativity will be transferred to you, and some of the immense positivity you contain will be transfered to her. This would cause many magical boundaries to become unstable, and to prevent any untimely incidents from happening, both of you would have to be separated until the curse weakens and dies down. And believe me, it will last for a very, very long time.
Closing her eyes, the first sister pulled her shivering sister closer to her.
"Do it. Do it now. I want to bring the whole curse upon myself."
Are you sure? There's no turning back. You will never be able to truly be able to once agin become the cat you are today if you choose to do this. You will change. A lot.
"I'll never be the same cat I am today if she dies..Do it. It is my wish to save her. It is my fault for accepting the old woman's gift that this has happened. Do it."
There was a blinding blast of light, then silence.
Both sisters woke up in two different, far away fields.
The second sister gasped in surprise when she looked at herself. She was no longer made of plain glass. Her smooth pelt was a glimmering turquoise color, like the stone. Soft plumes of curled fur that appeared lighter than clouds covered her body. Intricate designs were patterned all over her, like a mosaic. She had been turned into a work of art. She closed her eyes and crystal clear tears began to fall. Her sister had sacrificed herself so she could become the beauty she dreamed herself to be. Now, because of her selfishness, she would never see her again.
I am the one at fault.
Meanwhile, the first sister had also changed, but not in the way her other sister did. Her porcelain body was filled with large cracks, like huge, gaping scars. She was different. She felt different too. Where as her old self would have thought optimistically, the only thoughts she had were of despair. She was tempted to just lay in the vibrant green grass and forget all her worries. But one thing drove her not to. One happy thought that comforted her.
My sister is alive..And I am too.
Both sisters took on new names. The first called herself 'Confracta Somnia,' meaning Shattered Dreams, for everything she had known and loved had shattered. The second sister called herself..Swirly Pop. Why such a ridiculous name instead of something more majestic? Well, Swirly Pop did not wish to have a great name. She just wanted to be simple. Also, the silly name had a purpose. It was there to hide all the regrets and pain that she had deep inside.
I write this story for I myself have experienced many, many regrets in my life. If I had the chance to go back in time, there are quite a few things that I would change. Unfortunately, I am bounded here into the present, as are almost all of us.
Who am I, you may ask? I am Onite. I go by many names. The sculptor, the carver, the traveler, the cursed. I have wandered far across this land, to places far beyond the reaches of one's imagination. Why do I happen to be in this despairing state, you ask? My story is one to learn for another time.
