Do you have an specific advise for competitions?


Though I really haven't been here that long compared to many community members (early august), I can give some advice. Some may disagree with what's most important in a form, but keep in mind that this is just my personal opinion.

For Impress-me's: Though there's nothing wrong with longer forms, my opinion is quality over quantity. Make sure everything in your form is meaningful and contributes to the character you are making. Coding can boost your chances in many cases, but a pretty form isn't everything. Many judges also appreciate art in your forms, so in most cases it's wise to add some art to your form. Originality is can be key in these contests.

For naming contests: Come up with a unique name that fits the plumerian's design and the character you are planning to shape. Many possibilities can be hidden beneath the surface of a fitting name. Check the archives and the the other entries to make sure your name hasn't already been used for a higher chance.

For quick image contests: These can be tricky considering they usually only go for a certain number of pages or entries before they close. With a short amount of time, you want to efficiently find stunning picture(s) that haven't been used by anyone else and possibly a fitting name/and/or gender. It can't hurt to check for images and names that are the same as yours. Overall, originality (in my opinion) can be a huge key part of your form.

I've been trying to improve my forms and writing style by looking at winning forms, but it's hard to stick to (some of) your own style, while paying attention to tactics used, and also not copying them

Do you have an specific advise for competitions?

Well, aside from the normal advice of trying your hardest and such; I'll give my own little thingie here

Although the opposite isn't true; When you like what you're writing and you really connect to the character and you do your best to ignore the stress of the actual competition, it conveys very well to the judge. What I like to do is I like to think of character concepts and ideas before I get into a contest, that way I'm not put on the spot when it comes to making a character and it doesn't feel forced. There's studies proven that you don't do well when you feel like you're being pushed into it, which is probably why I didn't do as well with Hadley, character-wise, as I did with my others. With Hadley, I pushed myself into the competition without thinking of what I wanted to do first, which is why I'm still patching up her character now. I think art was my only savior for her competition. xD

Anyway, aside from that, if you're not clicking to a character concept and no matter what you do you just can't get it to work; there's no shame in starting over.

Most importantly; Don't be afraid to ask for help. Whether you need someone to code for you or you don't have enough time to draw for the competition; that's what we're here for. The plumerian community used to be known for it's supportive-ness and how willing people were to offer help. Although it may not be the same case for everyone now, there are still a lot of people who'd be willing to give you some pointers. c:

Also what I was saying before with the first paragraph; when I say the opposite isn't true I mean that if you still presented a form where the character wasn't one you completely connected to or something; that doesn't mean it's bad/won't win. ^^;

What is a unique quality you have for your plumie?

Each of mine kind of focus on either an event or a personality trait of theirs, except for Chase. What I like about Chase, and probably why he's the most unique of mine, he was won mainly off of character development within his form. It was a 19k word form that was 9/10 from his point of view. Although some people may not like his character, I don't at times because he can be really careless and problematic (not in a racist/homophobic/etc way though, I don't use my characters as a way to insult a group of people), some can at least agree that he's a well developed character. He doesn't really have anything special going on in his life other than his job/cosplaying, which you can only do so much with.

Monty is the exact opposite. For him, I went in the direction of strength- mentally speaking. I sort of use him as a way to cope, when I look back on him I see a really broken character who's been through a lot and still suffers... yet he's able to get out of bed in the morning, go to work and care for his two kids and husband. Even if he's fictional it still kind of sets the standards for me for "if he can do it so can you". I don't know, it sounds weird when I put it into words.

My other three are a mix of the two extremes I showed up there.

if described in one word, one would call november rebellious. by simply looking at her you can tell that she definitely isn't your friendly neighborhood goody two-shoes. november is the kind of girl to go out in the middle of the night and do graffiti, to run off on unannounced roadtrips with friends, to swear at a kid and be completely unaffected by the fact that she did it. she doesn't care what others think, if it isn't already obvious, and does her own thing 24/7. though her moms can be disapproving of this behavior, there's no way she'd ever change. as a child, she was sassy and loud and quite the prankster. but we all change over time, and now she's more sarcastic, mysterious and secretive about what she does. due to horrible experiences with men in her past, november does not trust men and is generally repulsed by them. there are only a few guys that she trusts. she is known for complaining about every girl being straight or taken. she, being a huge feminist and equal rights activist, often joins parades and protests for equal rights; she wears her pride bands proudly. though seeming very silly and reckless, november takes her job and personal life quite seriously, often ditching going out with friends for something to get projects done. when you meet november she can seem impulsive or idiotic, but truly is a good person with good intentions - she's just trying to have fun.

As many others have probably said, it's quality over quantity in most competitions. Try developing your character to make them realistic, whether it means asking for help, answering a bunch of questions, drawing some art, writing a story... Even if the competition is short and you aren't allowed to write about personality, develop your character on your own anyway! If you have a good character, then when you write up the 50 word description, one piece of art, or whatever else you need to do, you can show the character without actually writing specifically about it. Are you only allowed one piece of art? Be creative! One-piece art comps tend to be judged based off of the personality shown in the art, in my experience. Instead of doing a simple headshot or average standing pose, make something that shows the artist who the character is. You could draw the character participating in their favorite hobby or interacting with another plumie; you could make a comic or animation that shows the character's experiences or how they move through everyday life.

When you have a competition that requires something like 'best friend', 'personality', or 'greatest fear', see if you can show that without just describing it. For example, if you need to write about a best friend, write a story about the character interacting with their best friend instead of just saying 'this plumie's best friend is ___.' If you need to write about personality, I highly encourage that you don't write a flat out personality section! When I'm judging, at least, I'd much rather read an engaging story that shows the personality than just reading about the traits without seeing them in action.

Lastly, it's always helpful to get critique. Ask a friend to read over your form. It's great to have another view on your work, and they can help point out typos you missed or areas that don't seem realistic.

After growing up a bit,Hibi has turned the way she acts around a bit.She now takes crap from no Plumie,and tends to backsass a little more than she needs to.She still adores her momma,daddy,and siblings,but normally only they and close friends see her sweet and loving side.Years of constant bullying has turned her wary of kids she doesn't know and her old tormentors.She isn't horribly shy around anyone,unless of course she has a crush on them and/or looks up to them a lot.She's not as bad as Reese in the way that she is wary of new friends,as she is more willing to give someone a chance,but betray her and then she will be as bad as Reese towards you.

Do you have an specific advise for competitions?
For one,only try out for ones you like!Don't enter every contest made just so you can get one.Try to do your best in it,don't be discouraged because you can't code,or write,or draw.Many people would be able to help you out,you just have to ask them!They would be happy to,I'm sure.And as for non-owners,there are a lot of non-owner contests as of late.Try out for those,you have a bigger shot there I think.
